He's a real cutie!

I think it would be neat for you to write about the testing for babies of celiac parents.

OMG Stef--he's beautiful!! So cute :D

I just got home, checked the board and was so happy to see pictures.

I think the diary is a fabulous idea. Your doctor sounds great, too. :)

:) Last night I got to hold a 2 month old preemie. He was about the size of a small newborn. It made me really anxious to have the baby. He was so tiny and cute and light and cuddly. His mom had an emergency c-section at 33.5 weeks. Her due date was only two weeks before mine. Now I really can't wait to see little Annika!!!

I was holding Lil silvia yesterday, she is now 4 months old, but she is only 11lbs. She is still very tiny and wearing newborn clothes. She smiles and laughs out loud. I adore her.

Guhlia Rising Star

Austin was 7 lbs. and still in preemie clothes. He was about the size of a newborn, but he definitely looked like a preemie. It was nice getting to hold a tiny baby again. I can't wait until its my own.

Lukas is adorable!!

I think it's a great idea for you to keep track of how things go w/the celiac tests and such. Sounds like a great ped!

All this talk about preemies brings back memories.........

Daniel and Connor (my twin boys who are 6 now) were born at 31 weeks gestation, both weighing 3 lbs. 12 oz. each...... They were so tiny!

Thank God, I had the steriod injection when my water broke on the Thursday and I didn't go into labour until the Sunday, so the steriods really kicked in and their lungs were really strong when they were born. They had to stay in the special care nursery for just over 3 weeks, just to gain weight before coming home.....

Hugs.

Thanks for all the congratulations! I hardly had the time to get on here. I was wondering how other people do that and then probably with more kids than only one??? That's insanity! Well, something has to give, as I said it before. And it's not the traveling and the business. So it's the computer... sorry guys. I won't be on here that much anymore, but I still think, the diary is a good idea. And I will still do it, just not every day anymore. Actually Luke loves traveling. And he has been pretty good throughout me teaching classes since Tuesday  . Although he had some tantrums during class, it still wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. He is soothable pretty easy, cause he loves to suckle  . I just plug my nipple in and you won't here a peep anymore  . And today I figured out, how to teach, while nursing. That's actually kinda cool B) .

Stef, glad to hear motherhood is giving you so much joy. At least we know that even if we don't see you, you are well and good :) Take care, Sweetie!

Stef, haven't heard anything from you in a while. I know you're really busy, but I was hoping to hear how you and Lukas are doing...

stef-the-kicking-cuty Enthusiast

Wow, I have a break. Quick, quick, now!!! Well, everybody is doing fine over here. Over a week ago we had some problems, where Lukas seemed to have hiccups for three days straight on and off. So at 2am my husband called the nurse hotline of Capitol Blue Cross. He also told the nurse, that my nipples were so sore, it would make breastfeeding almost impossible. When the nurse heard how long I breastfed each time, she was like, no wonder and told me to only feed 8-12 minutes at a time, then burp him for about 15 minutes, and then switch sides and breastfeed him again for 8-12 minutes, burp again for like 15 minutes and so on. This was the dumbest thing I ever did... <_<

At first it sounded like a good idea, but after a few days he became really cranky and had a lot of crying spells. Then I had a little fight with my husband, cause he had the opinion, my milk must not have enough nutrients and that's why Lukas would cry. I was like bull...., my milk is fine. Lukas gained 8 oz in like one week, there's nothing wrong with my milk. It's the length of the feeding time, that's what's going on. He is just enjoying it so much, that he takes his time  . My husband didn't want to believe me. I was like "How would you feel, if you like to eat for one hour and then all of a sudden after ten minutes I pull the plate away from under your nose? Wouldn't you be cranky and unhappy?" He didn't believe me, so I was like 'whatever'.

I went back on the grazing feedings, just to proof him wrong, and now Lukas really is the happiest baby on the block pretty much. Since today we figured out, how I can carry him in the baby carrier, that I got at my baby shower. This way I can attend to him, feed him and do my stuff at the same time. I also did some research and read an article about how african women carry around their babies the entire day and have them with them during the nights. And the babies feed on and off whenever they want from their breasts. So it can happen, that they feed like 5 to 7 times per hour for 5-7 minutes each only. And studies found out, that they are much happier than other babies. We do this, too. And my nipples are used to it now. They toughened up a lot, so they are almost back to normal now, before they got sore. Thank the lord for Lanolin... lol. And thanks to this a pacifier is not known in our house. I only use it, when I really can't attend to him, like when we're riding in the car, where he needs to stay buckeled up. Or, when I give or take classes. Other than that, there's no need for a pacifier. A pacifier just makes my life comfortable. It does not give him the love of a human being. And he knows, he's being ignored. He can feel it. So away with that thing unless there's really no other choice left. :P

Hi Angie,

I just looked at your picture. That is so cute. She really looks a lot like you.

People say, that Lukas looks like me. I can't see that yet. Actually I don't think he looks like hubby or me, more a little like both of us. People only say, he looks like me, cause they never saw my husband before. There are already certain features that he has from both of us. He definitely has the slide nose from me and the long eye lashes (blink blink). He will be a pretty boy heart breaker, when he's 16, hehe. He has those huge irises kinda like Elijah Woods type thingy  . I think, he also has the eyes from his dad. His dad has glasses. The way his hair grows, the pattern, and the forehead he definitely has from his dad also. His forehead is a little off, like a neanderthal... lol. But his is not as extrem as the one of his dad. His is more straight up, instead of falling back. My husband said, Lukas would have my ears as well. I hope not, cause then he only hears, what he wants to hear  . But he definitely, 100 %, has my mouth, which is even worse than having my ears, cause I can't shut up, hehe. Enough with joking. Yeah, he looks a little like both of us.

Great, then when he grows up, he looks like a pretty neanderthal with glasses, who can't listen, but tells you his opinion, even if you don't want to hear it. Well, nevertheless, I think, he's cute as heck. Makes me want to cuddle him all day long :P

Stef!

Glad you found a minute and were able to post. I loved hearing all about Lucas and how the two of you are doing.

AndreaB Contributor

Thanks for the update Stef. Sounds like everything is going well with you three. :)

Guhlia Rising Star

Glad everything's going so well for you, Stef. I'm also glad that you've learned to trust your instincts. Nursing 8-10 minutes may be what's generally accepted, but we all know that averages aren't right for everyone. :) Annie prefers nursing for about 15 minutes per feeding and only on one breast per feeding. For us that's what works.

Do you have a sling? If not, I highly recommend one for when you need to get things done. I've learned how to nurse and everything while wearing her. Its wonderful. I was too cheap to buy one with Tori and I'm totally regretting that right now. Life is SO much easier with the sling. :) Especially with a fussy, gassy baby.

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind

Thank you for your post, @nanny marley It is interesting what you say about 'It's OK not to sleep'. Worrying about sleeping only makes it much harder to sleep.  One of my relatives is an insomniac and I am sure that is part of the problem.  Whereas I once had a neighbour who, if she couldn't sleep, would simply get up again, make a cup of tea, read, do a sudoku or some other small task, and then go back to bed when she felt sleepy again.  I can't think it did her any harm - she lived  well into her nineties. Last week I decided to try a Floradix Magnesium supplement which seems to be helping me to sleep better.  It is a liquid magnesium supplement, so easy to take.  It is gluten free (unlike the Floradix iron supplement).  Might be worth a try.
