Thinking About Quitting My Job

i have been so stressed and frustrated w/ my job at a dental office. i love the environment, but not the people i work with or the way the business is run. i'm tired of being picked on, disrespected, getting into fights w/ my husband b/c he says i don't stand up for myself and they mess up our plans by throwing crap at me. this last weekend i've been so pissed off, i couldn't calm down. i got stuck @ the office 2 EXTRA hours in addition to my regular 10, b/c i was the one supposed to close, and they had flooring guys there, who had just laid down the glue when i told them it was time to close. so my manager said "tough i'm out of town, i can't do anyting about it" and the boss said "i don't wanna waste 2 hrs of my night driving down there (from 1/2 hr away) so you don't have any other choice." i was livid. i went into this job because when i was in high school i fell in love w/ the dental office environment, working for a wonderful man, and with wonderful coworkers for 2 years! it was my dream to find another office liek that. this has been the OPPOSITE! in every way. can i find that dream job again? or was it just good in hindsight b/c it was freedom, it was extra money, and it was 3 hours a day? what do you guys think?

Are there any other dental offices in your area???

Working in job you are unhappy with is tuff!!! Sometimes you have no choice but to stay but if you can I would start looking for a happier environment!!!!

It's a tuff decision but I wouldn't stay ina job I hated especially if it's effecting you life outside of the job!!!

good Luck!

I think life's too short to spend most of your time at a job you hate.

If you need the money, look while you're still working ...

I agree life is much too short to be miserable at work. You spend a major chunk of your time with your coworkers. sometimes more time than you spend with your own families. You need to have good relationships with your coworkers or everything else is going to hurt. By the sounds of your post, your job has started to interfer with your personal life, and nothing good can come from that. I would keep the job while you are still looking. (I made a mistake and quit a job and it took almost 6 months to get a new fulltime job...big mistake for me) I would bite your tongue as much as you can...and try to look to the future and do everything you can to keep happy in a hard place. Good Luck/

so agree with everyone else.

yes life is too short but also it's flowing into your home life.

focus on 'JOB HUNTING' AND LET THE NASTY PEOPLE ---GO EMOTIONALLY.

I KNOW IT'S HARD ...I HAD TO DO IT ALSO AND IT'S THE ONLY WAY I COULD SURVIVE..

THIS 'TILE' STORY IS BEYOND ACCEPTABLE..IT'S HUMILIATING AND NOT GOOD FOR YOUR PERSONAL HEALTH OR MARRIAGE.

AGREE WITH MANDA...IT MAY TAKE A WHILE..AND BILLS DON'T WAIT SO JUST WORK...IGNORE...AND LOOK

PLEASE DON'T THINK I'M BEING 'TRITE' BUT I'VE BEEN THERE--IT'S SO HARD TO DO..BUT FOCUS ON THE LONG TERM GOAL.............TO GET OUT.

PLEASE FORGIVE MY CAPS TONIGHT.

I agree with everyone else--time to start looking for a new job.

Int the meantime, though, it's very important to remember--the people you are working with are the ones who will be contacted by any employers who interview you!

So you need to be sweet as can be for now, Yes, that means you have to put up with the crap--but it's temporary, it's only til you get that new job. You can't let someone else pick fights with you. Period.

When you interview for another job, you can't say ANYTHING bad about your current one. If the interviewer asks for a reason why you are leaving, you can mention how great you hear the new office or doctor is, or that you are seeking a more convenient location, anything POSITIVE about the prospective job, nothing complaining about the old job.

You can't mention the tile story. No, it should not have happened. Your manager was obviously stuck, but the boss should have been there. And it sounds like the flooring company really screwed up, too--putting down the glue at closing time?????? The boss should have at least had an idea the minute the flooring company showed up (obviously they were late) and let you know that morning, But sometimes these things happen.

In any job, there can be emergency unforeseen overtime. We get this a couple of times a year at my job, and then it's a mad scramble to figure out who is going to pick up the kids, etc. It's horrible and disruptive--but sometimes it's unavoidable. Obviously, you couldn't have avoided it. But darn it, your boss should have! (Wonder what would have happened if you had said, "Sorry, but you didn't let me know in advance, and I CAN'T stay, I'll be here for another 45 minutes, and then I am leaving, you will have to come in and close." Hmm. Maybe they would have fired you, so maybe that wouldn't have been such a good idea. Oh, well.)

Or maybe they are looking for you to take more initiative? Like, "I know I'm closing today--how late is the flooring company who just arrived supposed to stay, as I cannot stay past X:00?" Or are you the low man on the totem pole who always has to do the grunt work, no matter how late?

Does the dream job have to be a dental office? What about a chiropractor's office, or a pediatrician's office, or an orthodontist's office, or an orthopedist's office, or a physical therapist's office?

I especially like chiropractors' offices--they're such POSITIVE places! People arrive in discomfort but always leave feeling better... :)

thanks everyone for your support. i'm gonna hang tight, act nice, and in the meantime look elsewhere.

Yeah, we usually end up working later than scheduled a couple times a week, as our doctors often get behind. It's annoying but we all deal w/ it. The thing that frustrated me the most was that I had plans, but no one seemed to care. I don't want to be working for a place like that. "Sorry, but you didn't let me know in advance, and I CAN'T stay, I'll be here for another 45 minutes, and then I am leaving, you will have to come in and close." And funny, that's exactly what my husband told me to say, and part of the reason we argued. He felt like I let them walk all over me, and that it's gonna continue.

Anywho, gotta jet. Off to the ol' ball and chain again for another week. Thanks though, I feel refreshed, and strengthened by the fact that this is only temporary. Oh, and by the way, I live in a huge college town, so there are TONS of dental offices :D No problem there!

Hope that today is better for you. I agree with what everyone else has said. Look for something else!

BTW, I used to work at dental office that the office girls were miserable. My supervisor was just unbearable to me and I left a few months ago.

Good for you Cheri, I bet that was one of the best choices you ever made. Do you have a little less stress now?

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind

Thank you for your post, @nanny marley It is interesting what you say about 'It's OK not to sleep'. Worrying about sleeping only makes it much harder to sleep.  One of my relatives is an insomniac and I am sure that is part of the problem.  Whereas I once had a neighbour who, if she couldn't sleep, would simply get up again, make a cup of tea, read, do a sudoku or some other small task, and then go back to bed when she felt sleepy again.  I can't think it did her any harm - she lived  well into her nineties. Last week I decided to try a Floradix Magnesium supplement which seems to be helping me to sleep better.  It is a liquid magnesium supplement, so easy to take.  It is gluten free (unlike the Floradix iron supplement).  Might be worth a try.
