Any Chance Their Is Gluten In :

I have been gluten free only for a week now. My terrible bloating after eating, need to constantly eat, and general feeling like I was going to die from constant stomach issues has went away. I still have acid reflux type issues, but had a general question for the board as to what they think my problem may have been last night. I know this is not a healthy diet at allllllll, and maybe the combo alone was enough to cause distress, but I wanted to verify gluten status of Fruity Pebbles, Munchos, or cool ranch doritos.

I had a few cool ranch doritos on a road trip yesterday because I thought I remember them being Gluten-Free. Then when I got home I ate two bowls of fruity pebbles, and had a few munchos potato chips. I know its a terrible combo, but it must be close to my cycle. Within about 20 minutes I was seriously bloated, and then got a sharp left sided pain requiring Mylanta. I do not know if there was gluten in there somewhere, or maybe the lactose in the milk was the culprit. I seem OK this AM at work, so whatever it was was short lived but definitely not good. The bloating/distension was severe and lasted until I went to sleep.

As much as I would love to say Fruity Pebbles are gluten free, they are not! Sorry! Chexs cereal is about the only safe cereal out there. The doritos are probably off the list too!

I always google on my Blackberry before eating anything Im unsure about. In this case I found on Celiac.com posts that cool ranch doritos and fruity pebbles were gluten free. I am seeing now, after looking up ingredients that the cool ranch doritos were definitely not lactose free. ha ha. I had a double whammy with the milk in the cereal and the doritos...plus it was all just fried yuckiness. Oh well...guess it will teach me to give into temptation. Sometimes I still feel like I can eat like I did when I was in my twenties, but my tummy reminds me otherwise!

If any other board members could comment on fruity pebbles Gluten-Free status Id appreciate it. I do get kinda sick when i eat them each time, but I always eat 2 bowls (over-do it) and always have 2 percent milk.

You are right about Fruity Pebbles! I did call and they did say they don't contain any wheat products but they can't label them gluten free because even though they are produced on a machine that is wheat free, the facility itself isn't wheat free. I would love a bowl of fruity pebbles! You are never too old (40) for fruity pebbles! :P

Does anyone else eat these? Imagine how happy the kids would be if they could put gluten free on fruity pebbles and coco pebbles. Maybe everyone should send them an e-mail to see if they can produce them in a facility that is wheat free! :)

I don't know about those products particular, I am also dairy-intolerant, so I understand the multi-food whammy. Just reading the ingredients on the cereal it would seem it would be ok, BUT I have found MANY, MANY, MANY, MANY (did I say MANY???) times that some products like your cereal there, chips, snacks, etc......that it is often cross-contaminated with other products that company makes. Many chip companies are off limits for me because they do the cheese flavorings, sour creams, etc. Look and see if products will say, "Made in a facility that also handles......." and then lists the other allergens that their plant will have in it. Some people aren't as sensitive with things like that, but many of us are VERY sensitive.

I am sure it is a lactose reaction...I didn't think it was the fruity pebbles themselves - but probably the milk I had in it. Who knows - Im just a mess when it comes to foods/multiple allergies.

I too eat Fruity and Cocoa pebbles with no ill effects. They are gluten free per the ingredients list

No do not eat Rice Crispies. It contains malt. This is made from barley and is not gluten free.

Your intestines need time to heal. Cut out all gluten (forever), dairy and soy should be avoided for several months until you are healed. Then you can start adding them back to your diet.

Thank you Ahorsesoul. I will try eliminating those three for now. Very tired of daily tummy pains here or there. Even a Halls cough drop seemed to give me a pain (gas from sucking it maybe). I only had white rice and grilled chicken for lunch, and for breakfast a cup of peaches and a few of these crispy rice crackelbred things (which I now see have soy as a main ingredient).

Maybe soy is a culprit..

Nobody has addressed the Munchos. They are a manufactured potato product and if they are anything like Pringles they have wheat in them as a binder. I think I remember seeing that as n ingredient a long time ago. I don't have a package in front of me but I bet that is your source.

You've gotten lots of good info. Just wanted to mention that the dairy could be only temporary. Soy is an issue for a lot of us but not all, so hopefully you can add that back in later as well. The best thing to do in the beginning is to eat as natural as possible such as fresh veggies, fruits, and proteins. Once your on your way to healing you may be able to add more of the processed goodies. Even the gluten free products bothered me in the beginning. I was eating a bunch of new grains that my system has never had before such as quinoa, sorghum ect. For the first year, I kept a food journal of everything I ate and it did help me pin point some things, but the soy was overlooked because I didn't know that even soybean oil or lecithin would bug me as well. I can only speak for myself, but I cannot tolerate any sort of processed food like doritos or cereal. Even supposedly gluten free ones. But I am sensitive to corn, dairy, soy and most chemicals/dyes as well.... I didn't start truly gettin well until I removed all processed food from my diet and began cooking only clean, whole foods from scratch.

I personnaly can't eat Fruity Pebbles, but I can eat the Malt-O-Meal Fruity Dyno-Bites. It looks like all Doritos are safe (at least according to my iPhone app called is that Gluten Free?) I can't find info on the Munchos.

Most of the time, I just go ahead and buy Chex, with all the different Gluten free flavors they have, it is kind of nice.

I dont know if any of you have tried them, but there are chips out there called Rice Works, they are gluten free and are a good replacement for Dorritos for those that can't tollerate Corn.

With me it just seems like everything hurts my stomach one way or another. I eliminated gluten and it has helped alot but I still have pain 80 percent of the day. Id love to do the "just eat whole foods" routine but some of us have multiple food sensitivities unfortunately. I can't eat raw fruits or veggies at all - haven't in years due to itching and bumps on my lips if I do. Sometimes even rice and grilled chicken will give me a sharp pain here or there. The doctor says its IBS and tries to give me Bentyl....but I never have diarreah, and wouldn't say I even have constipation seeing as I go at least every two days. I think someone is just missing the mark with me and it has been let go so long that I will suffer indefinitely. Nothing I try helps.

It's good to hear that Pebbles and Munchos are gluten free though. It would be great for parents of little ones who were celiac to have little "mainstream" treats to give their kids every now and then - not that I advocate the junk foods - but sometimes its comforting.

None of the variations of the Doritos Nacho Cheese flavor chips are gluten-free.

I too eat fruity pebbles and coco pebbles - No issues here.

I am not a super sensitive celiac though either. I do eat things that can be manufactured in the same facility, if it's made on the same equipment I won't buy it.

Those are two different statements in my mind.

Rice krispies are not gluten free, they have malt in them (barley). As a side note, just becuase something says Rice or Corn ------ , doesn't mean they are gluten free. You have to read the package and do the research.

My roomate is hung up on this and always trys to buy me what he thinks is gluten free. For example, Great Value Rice Chex type cereal, it says wheat on the box. He just assumes because it says Rice ---- , it's safe.

So beware and feel better! :D

For me, your reaction sounds like a typical dairy symptom. That's exactly how I react. A gluten reaction for me would never be over by morning but a dairy one would. I have no problem with soy but fresh dairy is out. I don't have a problem with Fruity Pebbles.

I get sick everytime I eat Fruity Pebbles. I try again the every now and then, but it never goes well. I eat the gluten free chex almost every morning without problems though.

I would guess it's the MSG in the Doritos -- often gluten is used as a binding agent in MSG -- nasty stuff that it is!

Not to be gross but if you're only 'going' every couple days you probably could benefit from taking magnesium malate and drinking a some ginger tea to get more regular. Don't overdo either but the bloating was my constant companion until I started working on the constipation, even after gluten free. I still have to drink ginger tea, do Pilates exercises, eat, yogurt, and take magnesium malate every day (plus drink lots of water) to not have a problem. I think for some of us the gluten is just one of several things going on.

      At 41 years old I have been fighting fatigue and joint pain for a couple months.  My family doctor kept saying nothing was wrong but I was insistent that I just didn’t feel right.  Finally after running several blood labs, one came back showing inflammation in my body and I was referred to a rheumatologist.  He was extremely thorough and sat with me and my family for a good hour asking questions and listening. He ordered X-rays of all my joints and more bloodwork.  He suspected some sort of reactive inflammatory arthritis.  My TTG (Tissue Transglutaminase) came back at 34. he told me to try going gluten free and out me on Salfasalzin to help the join inflammation.  Over the next couple days going gluten free and doing a lot of research and talking to people with celiacs,  we found that I should have an upper endoscopy for insurance purposes in the future.  I reached back out to my rheumatologist and expressed this concern and he got back to me stating I was correct and resume regular gluten diet and stop the medication until after that scope.     They were able to schedule me in for 2 days later.  I had been gluten free, or as close to it as I could be for about 5 days.  I know I ate some brats with it but wanted to use them up.  My symptoms had gotten slightly better in those 5 days.  I felt less fatigue and joint pain was slightly better(it had gotten really bad) so for these last 2 days I’ve gone crazy with wheat bread, pasta and such.  I’m hoping those 5 days didn’t screw this endoscopy up.  I can’t imagine after a life of gluten, my intestines healed in 5 days and after eating gluten again for these couple days,  my stomach hurts, joint pain is coming back up so I know the inflammation is there.   Hinesight after this diagnosis, I have had chronic migraines since my late teens.  Has that been a lingering symptom of celiacs all these years?  I’ve never really had the stomach issues, for me it came in heavy these last couple months as the fatigue, just always feeling tired and exhausted.  And the joint pain.     So getting in the car for the 2 hour drive to the hospital for this scope now.     Wish me luck!

      To play it safe, use Vasoline Lip Therapy. No questions as to it containing gluten.

      jmartes, Thank you for sharing  more information with us. Most of us Celiacs whose problems do not clear up with in a few years have to decide what to do next. We can keep seeing DR.s and hope that we will get some  medication or advice that will improve our health. Or we can go looking for other ways to improve our health. Usually Celiac Disease is not a killer disease, it is a disabling disease as  you have found out. You have time to find some ways to help you recover. Stay on your gluten-free diet and be more careful in avoiding cross contamination . KnittyKitty  and others here can give you advice about avoiding some foods that can give you the gluten auto immune reaction and advice about vitamins and supplement that help celiacs. You may need to take higher doses of Vit. B12  and D3.  About 20 years before a Dr. suggested I might have Celiac disease I had health problems that all other Dr said they could not identify or treat. I was very opposed to alternative providers and treatments. So many people were getting help from a local healer I decided to try that out. It was a little helpful but then, because I had a good education in medical laboraties she gave me a book  to read and what did I think. With great skeptism I started reading and before I was half way through it I began using the methods outlined in the book. Using those herbs and supplements I went from hardly able to work to being able to work almost fulltime. I still use that program. But because I had undiagnosed celiac disease by 10 years later some  of my problems returned and I started to loose weight.    So how does a person find a program that will benefit them? Among the programs you can find online there are many that are snake oil scams and some that will be beneficial. by asking around, as I did. Is there an ND in your area?       It's unfortunate that they won't work with you on this, but in the end sometimes we have to take charge of our own health--which is exactly what happened to me. I did finally get the tests done, but only after years of going down various rabbit holes and suffering. Just quitting gluten may be the best path for you at this point.

      My doctor didn't take the time to listen to anything. I don't even think she knows what it means. She is more concerned about my blood pressure that is caused by her presence than anything else and just wants to push pills at me. The so-called dermatologist wouldn't do a skin test. she prescribed all of these silly antihistamine skin meds. This lady didn't even know what she was talking about and said "they never turn out as celiac, they usually just say it's dermatitis so here's your meds," just like my regular quack. I'm trying to change insurance companies at the moment and that has been a battle because of red tape, wrong turns, and workers having wrong phone numbers. What a joke! The allergy blood days say I have a wheat allergy of .31. Hopefully it's just that and until I find a decent doctor and dermatologist, I'll just lay off the wheat anyway, since it gives me asthma, high blood sugar, and joint pain. So frustrated at this point. The rash on my back of arms/elbows is mostly gone. Both calves and chest have started up. smh. It comes and goes. It fades faster now, though, although my forearms still produce one or two bumps on each side. The itching has calmed down a lot except for the bump area. I have dry skin to begin with so anything affecting it just makes it crazy. i'm never going to eat wheat again. I don't care if they need it to produce results or if it is just an intolerance, allergy, or celiac. It gives me hell.
