Help With Severe Hair Issues!

I have been diagnosed with celiac disease within the last four months. After diagnosis I continued to use regular shampoo and conditioner with gluten. About two months ago I purchased gluten free shampoo and conditioner and my hair has gone crazy. My hair is extremely dry and brittle. It has no appeal but dullness and dry. I only stayed with this gluten free stuff for awhile and then went back to the regular stuff! I do not know if this is what caused the problem or what? I have always had dry hair but using the conditioner always helped. Now nothing. My hair is almost impossible to brush thru in the morning due to the dryness. Ugh! Help! Has anyone ever had this problem after going gluten free or using gluten free shampoo?

I've been pretty unhappy with the gluten-free offerings, too. Have you tried the coconut Desert Essence Organics conditioner? They have a shampoo, too, but I prefer the lemon. The coconut condition is the only one that doesn't leave my hair dry.

I use Garneir hair products and most that I have checked are gluten free and leave my hair nice and soft. When my hair has been really dry I have used a light application of olive or coconut oil at night or applied before shampooing warm with a warm towel wrap for 15 minutes or so. Also make sure you are getting enough good fats in your diet.

I use the Coconut Desert Essence as well. Also, hormonal issues, such as thyroid, can cause problems with your hair. If you've noticed a dramatic change, it may be worth checking into. I did a few years ago and that's how I found out my thyroid hormones were low.

Thank you all for replying. I am going to try the coconut product. Hopefully, this will help. I am desperate. I am hypothyroid but recently had labs done and it all looked okay. The journey continues. I am wondering if there could be another allergy that is spinning the hair problem out of control? I am afraid that if I do not find out the problem before long I will also lose all my hair. This is no fun anymore. <_<

It may not be the case for you but soy is a problem for me causing not just an itchy scalp when used in hair products but also causes my hair to fall out if I consume any.

Hi,

Body Sense (bodysense.com) has some decent hair products but nothing works like the oldies but goodies. I finally broke down and bought two wigs and use the gluten-free products. I feel like I look normal again when I'm wearing the wigs. Hope you don't have to resort to that.

Loey

I don't know why my post didn't go through. Maxi Hair vitamins from Whole Foods are AWESOME!!! My hair stylist asked me what in the world I've been doing for my hair? Then she told everyone else about the vitamins, and they were sold out when I went back for more...3 times. I had to get off of them to eliminate ingredients for figuring out food intolerance. I switched to Biosil, which works pretty well. I just went back to Maxi Hair, and my hair is looking so much healthier. Now I'm off of them again, because it has corn in it...don't know if it's bothering me. It is free of everything else though. Both vitamins can be found at Whole Foods. As long as I take vitamins specific to hair, skin and nails...I don't lose hair and it doesn't look like straw...but it does if I get lazy with them. I'd give them a try for a good couple of months, as it took me that long with them to really notice a good change. I do have thyroid issues too, and vitamin deficiencies...but Lupus will also make your hair fall out. My Lupus test was borderline last time. Stick to the vitamins.

Ok, I know I'm really late to this convo, but have you considered you might have Sjogrens?  I think I have Celiac and Sjogrens, because I have been trying to figure out what's going on with my hair since I went gluten-free in January.  It's dry and breaks off all the time, and is falling out a lot and my curls have changed.  I first found a thread that someone mentioned Sjogrens Syndrome on and I looked it up.  I've been suffering with classic SjS symptoms for years, dry desert-like mouth at night with perfect teeth until my 30's then suddenly an onset of cavities, dry eyes when waking, really bad hand feet circulation issues.  I haven't been diagnosed with either, but I do have one confirmed auto-immune disease and a family full of them, so I don't think it's too far of a jump.  I have been using Wen for years, but noticed after going gluten-free that it doesn't seem to help as much as it used to, which makes me wonder about the wheat in it.  I hope the maxi hair vitamins help me.

Also, I don't know how often you wash your hair, but once a week - twice at the most - conditioning most days is better than washing every day.

For back pain, I take a combination of Cobalamine B12, Pyridoxine B 6, and Thiamine B 1 (in the form Benfotiamine), which have an analgesic effect.  These three B vitamins together work way better than those over the counter pain relievers.  Theses are water soluble B vitamins that are easily excreted via the kidneys if not needed.  Thiamine will also help the nausea. @stephaniekl, welcome to the forum, Is your daughter taking any nutritional supplements?   Weight loss and failure to thrive are two symptoms of thiamine insufficiency.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms are not recognized as such by doctors.   I experienced similar symptoms when I became malnourished.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms can become worse quickly, and can affect one emotionally and mentally.  Although blood tests for thiamine aren't accurate, do have your daughter checked for nutritional deficiencies.  Thiamine B 1 works with the other B vitamins and magnesium.  Thiamine and Niacin B 3 help improve Gerd.  All the B vitamins are frequently low due to malabsorption.  Vitamin D will help calm the immune system.  Thiamine helps the immune system fight off viruses like those tick borne illnesses.   Thiamine Mononitrate, which is in many vitamin supplements, is not bioavailable.  I was taking a multivitamin containing thiamine mononitrate and still became deficient in thiamine. Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine has been shown to promote intestinal healing.  A form called TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) is also excellent for correcting thiamine deficiency.  A combination of Thiamine, Cobalamine B12, and Pyridoxine B 6 has analgesic properties.  I take it for back pain.   Keep us posted on your progress! Has prednisone or some other systemic steroid been tried that might quiet her immune system down for a while? I have two acquaintances with Lyme's disease. It is a wicked condition that has long fingers.

We have.  She is so limited as to what she can eat.  She has a nutritionist, but they are even at a loss.  Right now, her pain is so significant that she can only eat 5-10 bites a meal.   We just got some labs back today and she is hypoglycemia, anemic and her immune system is shot.  She also is positive for 3 tickborne illnesses.  Thanks for your help!

A much better suggestion than that of the new doctor!
