You are correct in that any product would have to be ingested to cause an autoimmune response. I do not screen anything but lip products and eyedrops, plus hand cream. I shouldn't have to mention that anything which is used in the mouth is another screened item. I am a very sensitive Celiac but am very careful about ingestion and so far, after 6 years, have...

I think the original poster was referring to those who do not have IgA deficiency, which would make a biopsy or dietary trial your only option. It is possible to bring those down close to zero even if you were diagnosed by blood work and not deficient.....at least the IgA/IgG. Mine were 1 at last testing butI have been gluten-free for 6 years.

The tTg test will never be zero, which is why there is a range given for normal. I do not know what your original tTg numbers were when diagnosed but they must have been elevated for a doctor to diagnose you with Celiac. If you had continued to consume gluten on a regular basis, then your blood work most certainly would have been higher. It would naturally...

ARCHIVED We All Get Discrimination From Normal People !
Gemini replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your story is common here with regards to going to doctors forever and being blown off or told you're crazy...been there, done that! It is maddening but this is the sad state of US medicine. It's not only VA doctors who are making these mistakes. Karl...I'll spare you the rant I could blow up with regarding US citizens and soldiers being denied compensation... -
ARCHIVED We All Get Discrimination From Normal People !
Gemini replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Karl....I have more in common with you than you may think, my friend! Although I was not dirt poor, my family did not have much money at all when I was younger. I was brought up in the 1960's and 1970's so people were not so much hung up on material goods, like they are today. I am not a materialistic person, even though I could afford to be. My husband and... -
ARCHIVED We All Get Discrimination From Normal People !

Do you really feel this way just because you have Celiac Disease? I was also a sickly child and about as malnourished as a person can get, when I was diagnosed at the age of 46 and I do not in any way feel like I am disabled. I do not have to fight for everything I need because I have a job and earn the money to do so, like everyone else. I work with truly... -
I am in the US and I buy Gifts of Nature certified gluten-free oats, on-line. I have never had a problem with these and am an extremely sensitive Celiac. I do not have a problem with the oat protein or the amount of fiber in oatmeal. You could probably order them also and give them a try. There is no CC with these oats. Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Teeth Cleaning
Gemini replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Any Celiac should always check labels themselves as a precaution and I have probably done more research on this than anyone. I have and always will have to have a lot of dental work done, due to all the damage from Celiac I racked up over the years. I have yet to find any dental product (and I have used just about everything) which contains gluten. Crowns... -

No problem! Let me know when you are back on the oatmeal and I'll send it to you or post it in the recipe section. -

When I do eat oatmeal now, I eat a large serving...probably the equivalent of what you eat. I make a breakfast dish out of oatmeal and apples and raisins that is cooked in the oven. I LOVE the stuff and it's packed with nutrients. That's my favorite breakfast....oatmeal and a couple of eggs. I have been gluten-free for 6 years now and have healed really... -
ARCHIVED Teeth Cleaning
Gemini replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never come across any dental cleaning products which contain gluten and I have my teeth cleaned 4 times per year. You may want to see the label to make sure that your dentist has things correct. I have had to correct the dentist a few times myself when they weren't sure. I find that unless someone has celiac disease themselves, they make a lot of mistakes... -

If you are used to eating oatmeal that much or other high fiber foods, then you do not have to give it up during recovery, unless you have a reaction to it or notice other changes. I use Gifts of Nature certified gluten-free oats and they agree with me fine. I ate a lot of oatmeal before diagnosis so didn't have any problems with it after....using certified... -
ARCHIVED I Had My Colonoscopy Thursday.
Gemini replied to cahill's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You never know how awful it may be until you go through it so it isn't something I intend to do anytime soon. I know many who complained they became horribly dehydrated. So sorry it was a bad experience for you. Colonoscopies are a valuable tool for screening but I think they pressure people too much and not everyone needs to have one just because they have... -
ARCHIVED Dental Treament For Celiacs And Fosamax
Gemini replied to SilverDreamMachine's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hello Peter, I have a lot of experience with this subject so I will throw in my 2 cents worth..... Taking Fosimax or any other bone meds can cause major problems for those seeking implants. You do not know if it will affect you but if it does, there is no fix for the resulting problems. I have never taken bone meds and will not as I am currently... -
ARCHIVED Medications Not Working As Well With Untreated Celiac?
Gemini replied to costellosfriend's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Absolutely! I went seriously hyperthyroid 4 years after starting the gluten-free diet and it was all due to increased absorption after healing. I now take a smaller dose of thyroid hormone. Anything which melts in the mouth will get into your system via the bloodstream so it does indeed pretty much by-pass the gut. This could be your son's problem. The... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free...just Because
Gemini replied to NorthernElf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with your sentiments about this subject and think you have hit the nail on the head. People become extremely uncomfortable with those who have will power, especially when it comes to food. Like a bunch of teen-agers, even adults, it seems, want to be like everyone else and fit in, which is mind boggling to me. I don't understand why people focus so... -
ARCHIVED Traveling After Only 10 Days Gluten Free... Any Suggestions Would Be Apprceciated!
Gemini replied to MsCurious's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Aside from the delicious gluten-free bread my husband now bakes, the Canyon bread is the best on the market. That is my backup bread, when the baker hasn't had time to make any. Try the raisin bread, toasted, with peanut butter on it...it's to die for! -
ARCHIVED Alone On An Island
Gemini replied to MBK's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
While I can understand some of your frustration, you will never see this happen with the AMA unless they can make money off of a Celiac diagnosis. Medicine is a business and they only cater to diseases that make them tons of money from treatment....sad, but true. In many ways, I am happy for this because they nearly killed me while I tried to get some kind... -
I absolutely wilt like spinach in any heat and humidity also! I do not understand how people can live in Florida in the summer because New England can be bad enough. I think it goes along with the thyroid problems because thyroid does affect body temperature. Honestly, I would rather it be 30 degrees outside than hot and humid. I think there is something...

ARCHIVED How Associated Is Hasimoto's Thyroid And Auto Immune Anemia To Celiacs?
Gemini replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My brother had 2 stents put into his heart because he had a 95% blockage in his arteries..at the age of 49! He really does not take good care of himself yet he refuses to see the connection. He takes about 15 pills a day and thinks those will "save" him and make him healthy. He also has a lot of Celiac symptoms but will not hear that he may have that also... -
ARCHIVED I'm Freaking Out!
Gemini replied to Tigercat17's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Actually, checking progesterone levels is far more accurate when checking for early menopause. The other tests are a joke because you may be symptomatic long before these fall. Progesterone is the first hormone to tank when entering menopause. -
I think it depends on where the salad bar is. The only grocery store I ever shop in is Whole Foods and wouldn't eat from any salad bar anywhere else. Everything is labeled well and the one I go to is very clean. They are extremely allergy aware and cater to those with food issues. I will agree that people are disgusting but if I can eat from them occasionally...

I am about as sensitive a Celiac as they come and react to minute amounts of gluten. I do eat from the Whole Foods salad bar but only when I am there when they first put everything out. They are very allergy friendly and their salad bars have always been safe for me, at least until the general public goes through. That's the only worry with the buffet.....

I can understand your dilemma because I still fluctuate a bit and I am in the midst of trying to figure it out. For the most part, I have good quality of life. However, one year ago my thyroid panel looked awesome. I felt great all year but about a month ago, I started to notice my nails were splitting...badly. I normally have beautiful nails...nails that...

If you have had a portion of your small intestine removed, then that would explain the problems with oils. You may have had the portion which controls fat absorption removed, making it harder for you to digest fats. I still have trouble digesting fats myself, even after 6 years gluten free. I use a digestive enzyme and that really helps with the problem...
