So if I understand this: The medical community can't be trusted. You are part of the medical community. Therefore you can't be trusted. Therefore the medical community can be trusted. You are part of the medical community. Therefore you can be trusted. Therefore the medical community can't be trusted. Where do I get off of the cycle?
  2. This is really going to be very specific to your local government regarding home-owner's association convenants and the covenants themselves. My experience with this from the other side, while living in Texas was this: Legal counsel advised that the convenants had to be enforced consistently or they could be over-turned when later attempts to enforce them...
  3. I made my answer concise for the humor but since we are trying to share info... My wife said "No" to the question about physiological differenece. She did say that the reduction of mood swings on my part helped with the overall mood/attitude/etc on her part resulting in improvements in that sense.
  4. My wife said "No".
  5. Gluten in toothpaste and other dental products is my favorite potential legend. Each time I see that topic I try to ask for a specific brand that has gluten. I get lots of responses about brands that say they DON'T have gluten and responses about brands that issue a CYA legal statement. I've never seen a dental product that has gluten. I'd like to because...
  6. It is a long article and I don't have time to sort thru it but a recent discussion on this cited this article as a source for threshold info: Open Original Shared Link
  7. I did a google search on this snipet from the extract posted: Pediatrics 2009;123:e582-e588 Within 30 seconds I was reading the full article.
  8. This is almost scary. We have an article for which the full text is available on-line. One or two sentences are taken out of context and used as evidence against the study and the entire medical research condition. ETA: This is precisely why people ask for references.
  9. The scenario that came to my mind was more of a parent saying "My child has no symptoms and the diet is too hard" and that is how they ended up with the six who continued to have gluten.
  10. Did the full article address whether follow-up biopsy was done for either group? It seems a little strange that they knew from the start that these six children had intestinal damage of some sort and no noticable symptoms and the criteria to note was that they still didn't develop symptoms. Beyond that, I'm not sure how this study supports the assertion...
  11. My path to diagnosis was erratic liver function lab tests, ultrasound of the liver showing scarring, a battery of tests to eliminate stuff (one was for Celiac). I had mild digestive symptoms that in retrospect were gluten related but liver damage was the first thing actually found. I was late 40s when that happened and almost a non-drinker (2-3 drinks...
  12. I've tried the regular and the cheese variety and generally like them. As with many of these things, they are cheaper if you buy a box of six packages from Amazon. What I'm finding is that very few of these crackers make it to me intact. I'm wondering if that is just the nature of these crackers or if it has to do with the Amazon/UPS handling? Anyone...
  13. As already stated, it is the fillers that could add gluten and those should be listed as ingredients. On a related issue: I was in my local grocery store and noticed that in their case they have "ready to cook" items (meat loaf, stuffed chicken breasts, etc.). Depending on how things are processed, there might be some CC risk from those items.
  14. There are some conditions that will cause a false positive but they are rare. Eating gluten will not cause a false positive because the tests are measuring the bodies reaction to the gluten, not anything directly related to gluten in the body.
  15. I found these in the Giant chain in Northern Virginia this weekend. The local Safeway still has the old formula Corn Chex in their inventory.
  16. There have been many reports on this board from people who went back on gluten to get test results. There is a lot of variation between individuals but the consensus seems to be that you need to be on gluten for at least six weeks to have damage detected by testing. Based on that I would say that you definitely don't go all the way back to square one...
  17. https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.ph...p;hl=washington That thread was started about three years ago but has recent posts. Most of the national chains with gluten free menus (Outback, Bonefish Grill, Legal Seafood, etc.) are represented in the area. I'd be concerned about a school trip giving him much flexibility to select a restaurant. I suspect...
  18. One solution is to e-mail it to yourself and then edit out the part you don't want prior to forwarding the e-mail. The caveat is that different e-mail services and clients handle forwards and editing of them differently.
  19. Thanks that does help - coping tips are always welcome - but not exactly what I was looking for. If you were chosing a hotel solely based on their free breakfast, is there a chain you'd recommend? I suspect that this is a feature that actually varies by location. Still, with vacation planning starting, it doesn't hurt to ask. Note: I won't select a...
  20. In this context are we talking about the general population or people with celiac?
  21. I've noticed that usually if a hotel offers a free breakfast it is heavy on gluten things with pastries and cereal. I usually bring my own instant grits (I know some people have had trouble with the Quaker grits but I haven't yet) and then eat fruit or sealed items with a label like yogurt. I tend to get up early so that helps with cross contamination for...
  22. At Wendy's all I have is the baked potato and chili. I've never had a problem. When I couldn't find anything else, I had a grilled chicken salad at Burger King with no problem.
  23. Austin Grill has a new menu and did not have a gluten-free equivalent on my last visit. The staff was helpful in making sure I got gluten free items. Hopefully they'll have new gluten free menus soon. zpizza has several locations in the area but not all have gluten free crust. I tried them this past weekend for the first time. Good pizza but gluten...
  24. I don't necessarily recommend this but one test that would be a general indicator of an allergy versus celiac would be to eat some wheat. When the symtoms start, take an antihistimine. If the symptoms improve pretty quickly, you "only" have an allergy. If the symptoms don't improve you probably have celiac.
  25. Moderators are volunteers who help keep the board on topic. My guess is that getting unpaid volunteers is difficult. To the extent we like the board to stay on topic, we should be appreciative of their uncompensated work. Beyond board functionality and rules, moderator comments about celiac are no more and no less valid than anyone else.
