ARCHIVED Gluten Free Lipsticks?
rbh replied to holiday16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Jacqui -- can you give me the info about how to check with SmashBox? Was it by phone or e-mail? I'm not doubting that they told you it was gluten-free, I'm just confused because they gave me a completely different answer via e-mail just last week, and I'd like to figure out what the discrepancy is. Thanks so much. Rochelle -
ARCHIVED Wholesome Farms Vanilla Ice Cream -- Sysco
rbh posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi -- does anyone know if Wholesome Farms Vanilla ice cream (made by Sysco) has ingredients from gluten? We want to go to Ellen's Stardust Diner in NYC this weekend for dessert, and that is the brand of ice cream they serve. It does contain "natural flavors." I'm having a hard time reaching Sysco, since they primarily deal with other businesses, rather... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Lipsticks?
rbh replied to holiday16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm also on a lipstick quest -- I had just e-mailed Sephora to ask about Smashbox, and was told that they could not guarantee that any of their products were gluten-free because they may be processed in the same warehouse as products containing gluten. I realize that every mainstream brand is likely to have potential cc issues, because they get their ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Taco Sauce
rbh replied to kbabe1968's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hershey's in the U.S. has actually changed their policy -- they no longer claim that they disclose all gluten. So, you do need to verify particular products with them rather than rely on the ingredient list. Cottage Soul -- if a compnay says that they will disclose all gluten in the ingredient list, the product does not necessarily say "gluten-free".... -
ARCHIVED Chocoholics There Is Hope
rbh replied to Deanne's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hershey's no longer has a "disclose all gluten" policy. They say that they do not know what is in the natural flavors because they come from a flavor house, and that these flavors could include gluten. For example, the natural flavors could include a barley derivative, and not be listed as a separate ingredient. (A lot can be hidden in natural flavors... -
My family is also always on the quest for a good gluten-free tortilla. We have a good one for a tortilla that you need to roll out; it is posted on our new blog (www.glutenfreediscoveries.blogspot.com). I'm intrigued by the idea of a tortilla that you don't have to roll -- I'm going to try the recipe for the poured one that has been posted in this thread...

ARCHIVED Clearly Listing Gluten Ingredients
rbh replied to happygirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Unfortunately, Hershey's seems to have changed their policy and no longer represents that they disclose all gluten in the ingredient statement. In fact, except for specific products, they cannot necessarily tell you whether the product contains gluten if the ingredient contains "natural flavors." For example, this is the response that I received from Hershey... -
Hi -- my teenage daughter and I are planning a trip to Manhattan, and would like to go back to one of our old favorites, Ellen's Stardust Diner in Times Square NY, home of singing waiters. Has anyone had any success eating there gluten-free -- even just for dessert? It is a really busy kitchen, so I'm a bit worried. Thanks so much.

ARCHIVED In Tears And Confused
rbh replied to jaysmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It sounds like a difficult situation. However, you might want to consider delaying the start of a gluten-free diet for your son until you have a chance to consult with a better informed doctor. If your son goes gluten free now, it will distort the later tests and make it difficult to get an accurate diagnosis, especially if you have to wait awhile for the... -
ARCHIVED The Most Delicious Home-made Gluten Free Bread I've Ever Tasted...
rbh replied to mamatide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm looking at my bag of Authentic Foods Sorghum FLour Superfine -- for a 3 TBSP serving size, there are 2 g of Dietary fiber, 6g of Sugar, and 2.6 g of protein. I bought mine at the local health food store in Needham Massachusetts -- places that stock Authentic Foods brand flours should be able to order it as well. I think you can also order it from... -
ARCHIVED The Most Delicious Home-made Gluten Free Bread I've Ever Tasted...
rbh replied to mamatide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Instead of 1 1/4 bups gluten-free flour and 1/4 garfava flour, I used 1 cup super fine brown flour (Authentic Foods) and 1/2 cup sorghum. Potato starch, cornstarch and flax seed meal was unchanged. I also had the eggs at room temperarture, and used milk heated for 30 seconds in the microwave. -
ARCHIVED The Most Delicious Home-made Gluten Free Bread I've Ever Tasted...
rbh replied to mamatide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was inspired to try this bread tonight after reading the posts. It is wonderful! I used 1 cup superfine brown flour, and 1/2 cup sourgum (no garafava). I don't know what it will be like tomorrow, but the taste and texture still slightly warm from the oven is fabulous. My teenage son, who does not have celiac and eats gluten outside the home, said it... -

Neutrogena Gluten Free (Wheat Free) Updated 01/15/03 Be careful -- the Neutrogena list is only a wheat free list, not a gluten-free list. I discovered this earlier this fall after having conversations with one customer rep who told me that a number of products were gluten free, only to be told by a rep the next day that the products have only been... -
When I contacted the company in September 2006, I was told that Tic Tacs are gluten-free. They are made by the same company that makes Nutella (also gluten-free) -- the number is 1-800-NUTELLA.

ARCHIVED Hydrolyzed Vegtable Protein
rbh replied to zachsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks, that's a really helpful list. Unfortunately, I think that Hershey's may have changed their policy when it comes to disclosing gluten, at least when it comes to "natural flavors". This is what they e-mailed me when I inquired about their sundae syrups: "Natural flavors are derived from natural sources which could have gluten. The Sundae Syrups... -
I talked to a rep today. She said that the regular airheads and the airhead sours do not contain ingredients containing gluten. However, the airhead extreme and the airhead fruit spinners DO contain wheat. She said that the products containing wheat were processed on separate lines from the others. THe phone number is 859.283.1234.

I had asked Jose Cuervo about the gluten-free status of their margarita mix that does NOT include alcohol already, and was told it was NOT gluten-free. This is the e-mail I received in November 2006: "Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding glutens in beverage alcohol products, specifically Jose Cuervo. Unfortunately, our Jose Cuervo Margarita...

Hi -- does anyone know what company makes Rose's grenadine and/ or have contact information for the company? Is it Cadbury/ Sweppes? I'm trying to find out if it is gluten-free. My daughter is going to a party on Sat. where they are planning to make Shirley Temples with ginger ale and Rose's grenadine. Thanks!

ARCHIVED Blue Diamond Growers Almond Nut-thins
rbh replied to Michi8's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I had contacted Blue Diamond directly because I was concerned about the cross contamination issue. I was reassured by their response. Although I realize that this is a personal decision, I felt comfortable that they take the potential cross-contamination issues seriously and the fact that they test the product for gluten is an added bonus. This is a quote... -
ARCHIVED Rolled Sugar Cookies For Cutouts
rbh replied to KellyM's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You could e-mail Annalise and ask her for a suggestion. Her e-mail is on her web site, The Food Philosopher. She is incredibly responsive to reader questions. I love her cookbook, and have made a number of items from it with great success. I used her book to bake brunch items for a brunch I was having for 60 people -- all gluten eaters -- and she was... -
ARCHIVED Heinz Ketchup?
rbh replied to TiffTiff's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Heinz now seems to say that the organic ketchup is also gluten-free. From their website: Open Original Shared Link "Where can I find gluten-free products? Heinz Ketchup and Heinz Organic Ketchup do not contain any gluten (the distilled vinegar used is from corn sources). Also, Wine Vinegar, Distilled White Vinegar and Apple Cider Vinegar are gluten... -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Coins (gelt)
rbh posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi -- does anyone know of any brands of "chocolate coins" (chocolates covered in foil to look like coins) that are gluten-free? Kids usually eat them as a treat at Chanukah time. Thanks so much. -
ARCHIVED Dan D Pak
rbh replied to Carriefaith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What about their nuts was NOT gluten free? Was the product just nuts? I'm finding it very confusing when products whose only ingredients are clearly gluten-free turn out not to be gluten-free, with nothing on the label suggesting that there is anything to check out. Rochelle, Boston -
Hi -- we're thinking of going to the Grand Canyon this April, a couple of days of camping, and a couple of days of staying in a hotel/motel in the Grand Canyon area. My 12 year old has celiac. Does anyone have any suggestions of places to eat near the Grand Canyon? (We plan to go via Las Vegas, and I know there are a lot of options there, I was more concerned...

Hi Mtndog -- did you ever find a restaurant in Harvard Square or Newbery Street? If so, how was the experience? I'm always looking for new places to try in the Boston area. Thanks.
