  1. I suppose it depends on what types of food you want to make. When my daughter was first diagnosed, I bought every cookbook I could find. I flipped through the recipes and any listed ingredient I saw was purchased. I had all sorts of flour and most of them were never used. I bought big containers to make up two different kinds of gluten free flour mixes...
  2. Been here almost three years now. Was born in Wichita and moved to Edmonds back in the 60's. Dad worked for Boeing. Moved from tha area at age 35 when I got married. Moved to MA, CA, NY and now back here.
  3. I'm in Bothell. Daughter doesn't have celiac but she is allergic to wheat and gluten among other things.
  4. I failed the first test and was not given the second one. I was put straight away on the GD diet. It's really not bad at all. The main thing was to eat some protein and fat with breakfast and less carbs then. Not sure how many carbs are in cream of wheat. You may find you have to eat less of it than you are now. Breakfast and lunch were really too...
  5. I've bought some that is labeled "gluten free" right on the package but I can't recall the name. It's the more expensive type and is usually located in the deli section rather than with the other meats. I've bought both ham and turkey.
  6. I make this for my daughter using Namaste brand pizza dough mix. I use ketchup for the sauce. She doesn't like a lot of sauce, so I just sort of drizzle it over and spread it out for tomato flavor. For the cheese I used made up Chreese powder. The Alfredo if I have it. I top it with some ham or pepperoni if I have that. Daughter loves it.
  7. My local health food store is run by a celiac and now advertises, "Your gluten free headquarters!" It's a small store but it's where I buy the bulk of my gluten free items because they have pretty one whole aisle and part of another with gluten free things. Plus more in the freezer and fridge. There is a large health food store in another city that also...
  8. My daughter has additional allergies, peanuts being one of them. She likes sunflower seed butter, pumpkin seed butter and more recently, cashew butter. She will eat pretty much any of the breads I've bought for her. But her favorite one comes frozen and has seeds and fruit in it. She also loves the zucchini bread I make. Recipe is on this site. I often...
  9. I just made these using a similar recipe I found online but I made a few modificatiions since we can't have egg, dairy or soy. I used some gluten free graham cracker crumbs that I already had. Smelled just like graham crackers! Have also seen a recipe calling for oats. Might try it again using the gluten free oats as well. I subbed in coconut oil for...
  10. My husband is Italian and he eats the Tinkyada. Doesn't even seem to notice the difference. I happen to like corn pasta for certain things. But then I think I have odd tastes.
  11. The rice dream on the store shelves here still says it is not gluten free.
  12. From what I have been told, corn and even rice have gluten in them, but it is a different type of gluten than what we refer to as gluten. Why it is called by the same name, I do not know. You can eat corn safely unless you have a corn allergy. Some people do.
  13. Just curious what substitutions you used. Daughter and I can't have egg or dairy. I have some gluten free graham cracker crumbs and need to use them soon. I was thinking of using coconut oil and rice milk. Would that work? I've never had the real thing so it doesn't have to be exact.
  14. I don't think it would work to sub the egg yolks for the oil. If it did, they would have you just put all the eggs in. Eggs add texture to the bread. I know this because daughter and I have an egg allergy and it is difficult to get a good gluten free bread without them. There is no need to waste egg yolks. They will keep in the fridge for a couple...
  15. I don't own a waffle iron. Had one years ago but never got a decent waffle from it and it was a mess to use. I should add that we also have allergies to egg and dairy so that makes making cornbread even more difficult. I did find a good recipe for gorditas that I posted here. We ate them unstuffed. They were very good and tasted like cornbread. I...
  16. I'd say it's much more likely that the person who said those were gluten free didn't know what gluten was. I just had an incident in a restaurant last night. We normally get the same waitress who knows my daughter can't have gravy on her meat. But we got a different person. And even though we told her "no gravy", she failed to tell the cook that. She...
  17. I don't know the health laws where you are, but here in WA, you can not bring in outside food at all. It's against the law. Now some places have allowed it. Not any that I know of recently, but when I was a kid my parents used to bring in other food for me when we went out for pizza because I wouldn't eat pizza. And when my dad was on a diet and had a...
  18. They're fine unless you have problems aside from gluten. Some of them do contain egg or soy. I always read the ingredients.
  19. Well, maybe your source was wrong? I can't see anything on the package that would lead me to believe there is gluten in them.
  20. What about foil pouches of ckicken and fish? I think thet taste better.
  21. Thanks! That's what I was afraid of.
  22. Well, I guess I answered my own question. Daughter and I went out to eat tonight and had chili, salad and fries. A meal we've gotten at least dozens of times before with no problems. I said "Just onions" on the chili. But after eating a few bites of it, I noticed a yellowish gooey string hanging from my spoon. Saw another little shred of cheese nestled...
  23. What ingredient in Tic Tacs contains gluten? I read the ingredients again and don't see it. I've been letting my daughter have them and she is allergic to both wheat and gluten.
  24. Are you sure they didn't have dairy in them? Just a thought...
  25. I know I am allergic to dairy and normally have an upset stomach if I accidentally eat some. Daughter is also allergic and for her it was ear and sinus infections in addition. I have also had a lot of ear and sinus infections over the years so perhaps dairy was the cause. Last night we ordered some tacos, beans and rice at a fast food place where we...
