ARCHIVED Cottage Cheese?
Juliebove replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Depends on the brand and what they put in it. Many use modified food starch. Yuck! Always read the ingredients. Here I could get a brand called Alpine Rose from the milk man. No modified food starch. Can't remember the name of the brand I bought on the east coast. -
ARCHIVED Oatmeal?
Juliebove replied to rutland's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You need to make sure to get the gluten free kind. There is one and it will say gluten free on the bag. The farmer has made sure to grow oats and only oats and to be careful that they are not cross contaminated in any way. Other brands may be cross contaminated. -
ARCHIVED Wheat, Yeast, Sugar, Dairy Free Bread Receipe
Juliebove replied to 3boysmom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I like this one. Although it does call for sugar I don't think the sugar is needed for rising. So perhaps you could sub in something else? A bit of Splenda and something else sweet? Like chopped apples? We can't do eggs so I sub flax and water. I've also added applesauce and a lot more zucchini. No matter what I do to it, it comes out well. -
I used it in meatballs. Really good! Can't really use it in baking because the recipes for it call for so many eggs and we're allergic to eggs. I highly recommend it.

Your husband is wrong. We have an old fashioned drive in here and my daughter was craving their food. So I ordered some fries and also a burger patty, no bun. I failed to check the order and we took it home to eat it so I could put it on her gluten free bread. To my dismay they had put it on a bun. I pulled off the bun, rinsed the patty, reheated...

ARCHIVED Mad At Grandmother For Glutening Baby...
Juliebove replied to zachsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I guess I'm lucky that my parents do not give my daughter anything without checking the label first. But they do not seem to understand the cross contaminiation thing and will do things like put the gluten free cookies on a plate with the regular cookies so they are touching. Actually they only did that once and won't do it again but remind me of it very... -
ARCHIVED Very Upset
Juliebove replied to Nikki2003's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Boy does that sound familiar! My daughter has allergies and not celiac, but before we knew what the allergies were she thought she was starving all the time. I knew something was wrong because in the middle of a meal she'd scream, "I'm HUNGRY! Can I have a snack?" Turns out eating the allergens gave her an upset stomach. But the poor kid who is allergic... -
ARCHIVED Very Upset
Juliebove replied to Nikki2003's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is most concerned about her school lunches. Luckily for me she loves inexpensicve foods like casseroles, beans and rice, chicken and rice, etc. But she said the kids at school were making fun of her lunches and what she really wanted was a sandwich like the other kids had. So I am willing to send in a more expensive lunch for her at least ... -
ARCHIVED Very Upset
Juliebove replied to Nikki2003's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I went totally gluten free at first but my husband was demanding some things like favorite cereals. I then bought my daughter her own little fridge and also set up a spare table and some stacking bins with all of her food. I do keep some things I would need for cooking and baking like rice, pasta, flour etc. in a separate place. But all of her cereals... -
ARCHIVED Very Upset
Juliebove replied to Nikki2003's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is 8 now and here's what we did to solve this problem. I got her a basket. In fact she has had it since she was old enough to walk. In the basket I put snacks that will keep for a while and are safe for her to eat. She has such things as Boomi Bars, Pumpkin seed bars, fruit snacks, raisins, bags of gluten free pretzels, nuts, etc. She knows... -
ARCHIVED Stickers And Bandages
Juliebove replied to mom-to-claire's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have the problem with bandages and medical tape too and I don't have a problem with gluten. Alas I have medical problems that require frequent blood draws. I've found that I can leave that tape or bandage on there for a few minutes and no more. Otherwise I get the rash that takes forever to go away. -
ARCHIVED I Have To Vent!
Juliebove replied to ptkds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can sympathize. My daughter is allergic to 7 different foods and another girl in her class is allergic to most of the same foods plus a few more. Each month the teacher gives them a pizza party. Well, when you're allergic to gluten and cheese among other things that kind of lets out real pizza! Parents are expected to send in $2 for the pizza. I did... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Soy
Juliebove replied to Anonymousgurl's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Westsoy makes a rice milk. If I were you I'd switch to that. My daughter is allergic to soy. It's becoming one of the "big" allergens. I also avoid soy due to a thyroid problem. Actually my thyroid problem stopped once I stopped the soy. I can't say that I ate a ton of it but I did have Tiger's Milk bars on occasion and also roasted soy nuts, Edamade... -
I've been trying a raw vegan diet. I am not totally raw yet and not sure I ever will be. I aim for about 80% raw. I have food allergies and that's how I came down this path. I do not need to avoid gluten but my daughter does so I simply don't bring it into the house. I also have lots of other health issues so I don't eat a lot of fruit. What I do eat...

ARCHIVED Corn Intolerance/allergy People Might Even Be More Limited Than Before!
Juliebove replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Wow! Corn is already hard to avoid and I think as hard if not harder than gluten. Last year I was in charge of the food for school parties for the kids with allergies. My daughter is allergic to 7 things (not corn), one girl had a severe peanut allergy and a boy had a corn allergy. I had the worst time coming up with anything for him to eat aside from... -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Some Animal Meats?
Juliebove replied to BBadgero's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It's possible to be allergic to meat. My mom is allergic to chicken. -
AFAIK, allergy shots are only good for things like inhalants and bee stings. Perhaps they now have them for food, but if so it's something very new. I tried them for inhalants and the shots were not for me. First there were all the trips to the Dr. and having to sit there for an hour after I got the shot to see if I'd get a bad reaction. I never did get...

ARCHIVED Birthday Cake Recipe
Juliebove replied to LED's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You should not use butter flavored things if you have a dairy allergy because they are derived from dairy. I use coconut oil as a replacement for oil, butter, margarine, shortening, etc. I used to use Spectrum shortening. It will work too. I just like the flavor of the coconut oil better. -
ARCHIVED I Glutened Her !
Juliebove replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Aargh! Wonder when they started doing this? These are one product I've always felt iffy about buying because they could contain traces of things my daughter is allergic to. But they are the only bar she really likes and since I have such a hard time getting her moving in the morning they're one thing she can have for a quick breakfast. She has her... -
ARCHIVED New...scared Of Gaining Weight
Juliebove replied to ptotheoop's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
An allergy is not the same thing as celiac. One does not progress into the other, although it's possible to have both at the same time. My daughter and I both have food allergies. She to gluten, among other things. You'll be happy to know that both of us immediately LOST weight after we stopped eating the foods we were allergic to. Not only did we slim... -
My daughter and I both have food allergies. She has a lot of them. I would not let her eat there. Just too much cross contamination even with a salad, plus I think their salads are nasty. I did let her get a bag of chips. The one and only kind they had that she was not allergic to. That and a drink were the only safe things.

ARCHIVED What Products Have You Pitched -after Gluten Free?
Juliebove replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Rice Dream. Now this one is confusing. The drink says it is not gluten free, although it says it in very fine print and not near the ingredients list so I didn't see it until my daughter had been drinking the stuff for some time. They use barley to remove the hulls from the rice, making it not be gluten free. Oddly, there is no such disclaimer on the... -
ARCHIVED I Think We Are Missing Something
Juliebove replied to bassgirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You can also be allergic to both wheat and gluten. My daughter is. -
