  1. I have not seen this too much here, thankfully. But I sure have on other forums elsewhere and sometimes even in real life. Things like... Are you sure you can't have dairy? Why don't you try it again! Who diagnosed you? Oh! That's not a *real* Dr. They did the wrong test! That test is not legitimate! Sorry to tell you this but you just wasted...
  2. Similar story here. Gluten isn't my issue but other foods are, including some herbs and spices. I knew that I had allergies but... I didn't know of the food intolerances. I knew that allergy pills didn't help me and most just caused sided effects making me feel even worse. I do tend towards blepharitis. I have to clean my eyes at least daily and...
  3. Stuffed tomatoes. Cut the tops off of little cherry tomatoes. Use a melon baller or tiny spoon to hollow them out. Let sit on paper towels, upside down while you prepare the stuffing. There are various recipes online and I don't have exact amounts but you will need crisply cooked bacon, finely crumbled, chopped green onions and mayo. Mix together and...
  4. Before I knew much about the gluten-free diet, my neighbor suggested putting my daughter on it to see if it would help her. She added that it hadn't helped with her daughter though and she had tried it for a full two weeks. So I said something like... "But isn't it hard to do?" She told me that it was easy. Just feed the kid rice instead of bread. And...
  5. Got into an argument with my mom the other day who herself has multiple food intolerances but perhaps is senile (we think she is) and doesn't realize it but is also super stubborn and has always just done what she wanted, whether it was the smart thing to do or not. And she lives in denial. Says she will not eat eggs (eggs make her sick) then orders waffles...
  6. Curious now. What is riffle soup?
  7. Yes! I originally made the entire house gluten-free but husband became angry because he no longer had his sandwiches. He loves pizza too but we don't, gluten-free or not so I'm sure he doesn't get that as often as he'd like but... I eventually bought premade sandwiches and then went back to making them after I got my daughter her own little fridge. ...
  8. Yes. I have been tested and do not have food allergies. I do have OAS to some things. But oats make me itch all over and the reaction is pretty soon after eating them. Also I find that my reaction is sooner and more severe if I haven't had a food for a very long time. I think when I was eating something all the time, I was just sick all the time. For...
  9. Hives, vomiting and diarrhea can also be signs of intolerance, among other things.
  10. Some people have reported problems with Bob's Red Mill.
  11. Cross contamination is the most likely cause. I have found salad to be a big culprit. They'll put croutons on, then pick them off. Not saying that this happened here but it has happened to me. Or a crouton could have fallen into the bowl that they used at some point. Someone may have used a knife in the butter and spread it on some bread, cross contaminating...
  12. Oh yeah. Can't tell you how many times that has happened! Even had trouble at Olive Garden. Order gluten-free, remind them not to put croutons on the salad and they'll do it anyway. Then offer to pick them off for you! Mm hm. I can't have dairy. So I will order a plain baked potato. Once, the waitress brought it out with little containers of butter...
  13. I can't speak for the hard shells at Taco Bell or for the chicken which only some items have. I can speak for the beef and it contains oats. Gluten isn't even an issue for me (was for daughter) but oats are bad for me. I do believe that the beans are safe. Not even sure about the rice. There are just so many other options here that we try not to do Taco...
  14. I believe that the Original Pancake House has gluten-free pancakes but they use Pamela's which has almonds in it, so not for us. Plus I can't do dairy or eggs so they seriously have nothing for me there. They may be a local chain. Not sure.
  15. I was just looking at their website and they now have a gluten-free menu. Not sure how long they have had it but we've been eating there for a few years and they were always good with food allergies.
  16. I don't have that problem but my husband and members of his family do. The first time I saw it happen was when my MIL and nephew were staying with us. Nephew was 13 and had made it his career to drive her nuts. He was quite sucessful!
  17. Not sure what it is. I used to have nasal symptoms so bad that I kept Kleenex everwhere and I went through tons of it! I also used to have problems with ears that felt hot to the touch and were visibly red. I have IgG allergies, aka intolerances. Eggs, dairy, fish, shellfish, chicken, lamb, rye, buckwheat and a whole slew of herbs and spices. Given...
  18. Could be. Don't know if it still holds true but somewhere on here in the past, someone posted that the margarine at Outback is not safe because it contains gluten. And they coat the potatoes with that.
  19. Keep in mind if butter is an issue... Steaks often have butter on them.
  20. Restaurant potatoes might not be safe! They sometimes coat them with butter or margarine when baking them and that butter or margarine could have had knives dipped into it or cut into it to spread on toast or something, thereby cross contaminating them. One restaurant even says that their margarine is not gluten free. Or if they serve the potato to you...
  21. Diabetes is not the same thing. Diabetics can technically eat anything. People seem to think that something horrible will happen to diabetics if we eat sugar. It won't. In fact if we get low blood sugar, we *need* to eat sugar. We do have to be careful with carbs. If I order a burger, I usually order it with no bun. Not only to lower the amount of...

    ARCHIVED Applebee's

I know this is an old post but two things come to mind. One is... What is the salad served in? If it is a wooden bowl, that could be retaining gluten. I don't like Applebees so will never darken their door again. I honestly don't know how the salads come. Another thing is that I have found salads to be a very unsafe item to order in a restaurant...
  23. I used to drink tons of coffee. Gave it up when I quit smoking. But when I was last tested for food intolerances, I tested as intolerant to green coffe. I would assume that would mean roasted coffee too. I don't know. Haven't tried any coffee since. Don't know that this is your problem but it could happen. You might try switching to strong tea for...
  24. Really depends on the item. In the beginning, I bought corn pasta in bulk but then was afraid to fix it. Why? Because I didn't know what might have been in that bin before and if it was cleaned out well before it was refilled. I have also seen customers using a scoop or tongs from one bin in anogther bin. Just too easy to cross contaminate. Now something...
  25. I would just say that I was on a special diet from my Dr. People will ask for further information and then if you tell them more, they'll look away or roll their eyes and it will become clear that they really don't want to know any more. If they ask for more, tell them that it's complicated and you'll provide your own food.
