  1. Yes, according to what I've read.
  2. I did. I had the endoscopy with biopsy first (doc thought I had an ulcer) and it showed stage Marsh I, meaning early celiac disease. I had the blood test to follow-up. I am so thankful that the biopsy was taken and that they looked for thngs other than an ulcer. With the amount of bad things I had going on, I'd hate to have waited to see what the damage...
  3. Congratulations! Sending prayers your way.
  4. I'm so glad that I read this thread. This used to describe me when I was young (and on gluten) and describes my son now, even though he is gluten-free. However, he is not as strict as he could be. He's a gifted student and a good kid but he can't wake up. I was wondering how he'll be able to survive next year at college. I've convinced him to be really...
  5. I can't bring myself to cheat. If you think of human biology, we have negative associations with things that make us sick. It's negative reinforcement. I even have trouble eating at restaurants that gluten me by accident. I don't characterize it as rat poison, I liken it to arsenic because a little will make you sick but a lot will kill you...you...
  6. Ha ha LOL! My "baby" brother is an ER doc.
  7. For anxiety, I think one needs to work on it before the attack, as it's too hard to address while in the middle of one. I suggest guided meditation, breathing exercises and knowing that it will pass. There are books and CDs and streaming audio to help learn. You could also try sublingual vit B supplements. I find that if I skip my supplement that I...
  8. Jess, you state: "Part of it is because I've been symptom free - it's hard to appreciate the seriousness of this when I didn't even realize there was a problem." Low vit d, lymphoma and low vit D are all potential "symptoms" of untreated/undiagnosed celiac. You might be surprised at how much better you feel when you go gluten-free. As far as short cuts...
  9. Jessica, I hope he starts to see how serious it is and with all your symptoms, I
  10. Jessica, I hope you're feeling better now. I hope this doesn't sound harsh, but I hope hubby saw/knew that you were on the toilet with a trash can! And I hope he had to take care of the kids while you were indisposed. I know, as a mom, that I'm somewhat of a martyr (I take care of people even if I'm sick) but your hubby should clearly see the effects...
  11. I think you're on the right track. And you have a great doc - how did you get so lucky? I too had problems with being starving all the time, not absorbing vitamins (Vit D and Bvits and calcium), but still gaining weight. I haven't been able to lose weight but it's lack of determination and willpower on my part. If your gnawing hunger stays away...
  12. Ardz, I wanted to comment on your testing first. I was diagnosed via biopsy but my bloodwork was negative. I feel fortunate that my body had, perhaps, less damage than it could have if my diagnosis had been delayed. And eating gluten-free is not really more expensive if you save the gluten-free treats for special events instead of every day. Rice,...
  13. I never ever ever liked beer (go figure) or hard liquor, so wine is my fav. However, I recently tried Glacier Potato Vodka from Idaho in a granita recipe. Open Original Shared Link It was great not to worry about gluten contamination. So look for a potato vodka.
  14. You have some good points, but the answers are still the same. 1) If eating gluten-free has made someone feel better, keep on it even if docs and/or tests say that there is no evidence of celiac. and 2) If someone still has problems, go back to the doc and keep getting tested. Ask doc to ignore gluten-free diet (gluten-free diet can't cause abnormal...
  15. Yes, there are a few around. Jerseygirl is one that I remember. Hopefully, they'll show up to answer the question. Or you could do a search and then send members Personal Messages with questions.
  16. I'm on a crock pot kick too. I'm not sure if I've talked about her before but Stephanie of Open Original Shared Link has tons of easy recipes and her daughter has celiac, so all of her recipes are gluten-free. She does some really weird things in her crockpot (creme brulee yes, gluten-free playdoh yes, haggis no) but these are great for busy person. Gluten...
  17. Leiana, I am sorry that no one has offered to help. I have the opposite problem and I'm not a trained nutritionist but here are some ideas for you and uraguaya. Have you talked to a dietitian? Get one of the docs to refer you and your insurance should pay for it. Eat lots of avocados, olive oil. Full fat cheese and milk if you can tolerate milk...
  18. It does suck but over time I've become used to it. Like Ravenwoodglass, I try to keep things on hand. But when it's a paid company lunch and I can't have it, it makes me mad. At a previous company, the whole group would gather once a month and have a huge sheet cake for all that month's birthdays. Everyone knew about my celiac and every month I would...
  19. Actually, it was I that recommended Karina's gluten-free goddess. Glad you liked it.
  20. I have used mint tea for gas. Pepto is what I use for nausea but don't think it helps for gas. I also really think wine helps...or at least I don't feel it as much any more. Some yoga poses are what I use. This one is actually called "wind releasing position" and can be done without any yoga experience. Open Original Shared Link Cat/cow and childs...
  21. Sorry, I missed the vegetarian part. I recommended this site earlier this week Open Original Shared Link She has a lot of veggie and some vegan recipes and an excellent primer on gluten-free eating. Check it out. I can't recommend a better resource.
  22. Margo, welcome. I think with your blood test that you have a 99.9% chance of having celiac. I have heard that there are other reasons for flat villi (on endoscopy) but the TTG test and other tests are specificially looking for (and in your case -finding) antibodies to the protein found in wheat. In other words, your body wouldn't randomly be spitting...
  23. 1) Congratulations (on being on the path to good health) and welcome. 2) Gluten Free Goddess has a free, wonderful website/blog. She is (mainly) vegetarian and sometimes vegan. WONDERFUL cakes and cookies. She also has a primer on how to go gluten-free. Can't say enough good about her (try her carrot cake). Open Original Shared Link 3) FYI If your...
  24. Ravenwoodglass, that is heart-breaking. In that way, I consider my diagnosis (after 30+ years) a huge blessing because it led to his "diagnosis." I've told this story before but to have a kid go from 75th percentile to 3rd percentile and be ignored and then to have my son say - after diagnosis - that he didn't know that "eating wasn't supposed to hurt...
  25. This is one of my sore subjects, as it might be for others. I'm 5'3". My mom is 5'1" and my dad 6'4" and I have two brothers over 6'. My hubby is 6'1". When my DS was 5'3" and 15, three docs told us that he was "destined" to be short because I was. I was trying to get a celiac diagnosis for him and they said no, no celiac. Just dairy-intolerant...
