Who wants to eat crudite and fruit at a party? Could you tell them she likes to have a special treat at parties and that's something you have to provide? She is only ten, after all. However you handle it, you are doing the right thing by protecting her health. -
ARCHIVED Appendicitis Or Celiac (or Gluten Intolerance)
TrillumHunter replied to sunnyl24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There are some specific indictors for appendicitis. If you are having pain that doesn't go away, it would be best to see a doctor. There could be a multitude of things causing the pain. A ruptured appendix is a big deal. My husband was hospitalized for 10 day with one. I urge you to seek medical care today. -
ARCHIVED Could This Be Celiac?
TrillumHunter replied to AngelaMH's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The current thinking is leaning toward diagnosing with blood work only. Endoscopy can be a misleading in the early stages. From what I understand, a gluten-free diet is very beneficial to people with Crohn's anyway. I have a friend that follows it for that reason. -
ARCHIVED For $10/loaf It Should Be Fresh
TrillumHunter replied to NewGFMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Any chance you'd consider a bread machine? I make up my own mix and bag it. I do enough for at least five at a time. Making bread then becomes a no-brainer that doesn't heat my kitchen at all. I never freeze bread and if I have a slice or two that get stale, they get tossed in the freezer to become bread crumbs. Not only does the bread taste so much... -

I like those giant ones as a pasta substitute. I use just the meaty part, not the seed cavity, and cut into strips. Saute these a bit of olive oil and some seasonings you like and top with sauce. It's sort of like spaghetti squash but has more bite to it. It looks like spaghetti as well. -

Wishing you a happy one from the Cumberland Mountains! You add much to this board and we're fortunate to have you around. -
The Village Market is in Collegedale, Tn. It is outside Chattanooga about 40 minutes from the downtown area. It's a market run by the Seventh Day Adventist college there and it's on campus. Ironically, it right next to the Little Debbie factory. Lots of selection and good prices. They have a website but they are CLOSED on SATURDAY! Everyman Co...

That's a good find, Deb. All the newbies and people who suspect should be directed to it. Good work! -

Maybe I do have a bone to pick but it isn't with you personally. I think deciding to go gluten-free because you have a family history and you know it bothers you is pretty damn responsible. Folks with pictures of their battered insides can't always do it. My bone is with the knee-jerk criticism of any author who dares to question the validity of recommending... -

ARCHIVED Horrible Slate Article
TrillumHunter replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Oh they aren't masochists, they're sadists. They're the people who make everyone buy them special crackers and then proceed to eat the cheesecake because "it's only a little gluten." You haven't come across any of these folks? That is great because they are screwing us over. I frankly don't think it's important at all to be officially diagnosed. What... -
ARCHIVED Horrible Slate Article
TrillumHunter replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
"Ironically, the people who may benefit most from the current vogue are those who have been gluten-free all along. The proliferation of gluten-free products has made life for a full-blown celiac easier than it's ever been, and a greater awareness of gluten-related disorders has more celiac patients getting diagnosed than ever before. (There are still thought... -

Hmm, I didn't read anything too dismissive to people with celiac. He stated at the end of the article that there are probably lots of undiagnosed people and that many are being diagnosed because of all of the attention lately. Two things I agree with are that eating foods you usually avoid give you an upset stomach that is NOT necessarily a sign of... -
I had these for years. I did finally have my tonsils out not because of the stones but because the crypts were holding infection. I couldn't get completely over strep and it traveled to my ear. I had ear infections so badly that I have a loss on one side. My gp said, "not that bad." My ENT said, "worst adult case he'd ever seen." It was the worst surgery...

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Pet Food -- Really Necessary?
TrillumHunter replied to OliveBranch's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nope, but then I feed the cats whatever and let them go outside so I'm the odd man out on this thread. For what it's worth, the cat I had before my current two was a true albino and completely deaf. She lived, despite everyone's warnings, for 13 good long years. I think good handwashing goes a long way. -
My friend, a cancer nurse, suggested it for a couple of years. I didn't want to do it because of the risk of allergic reaction. I got scoped and did a barium swallow because of the horrible retching and anemia. They took my gallbladder and it still continued. I was down in the single digits despite taking lots of types of iron. I finally just got fed...

I went through all that. I fought the iv iron for a long time. I took enough iron to build a locomotive but it never came up over over a four year period. I finally gave in because all that iron caused gastritis so bad that I was waking up retching every night. I'm going for my second round in couple of weeks. My serum went for 4 to 44 still low but...

ARCHIVED Bread Machine
TrillumHunter replied to sasso217's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Strange, because that recipe for me turns out perfect every time for me. I do have a custom setting on my Zo that I cannot find this am! This will drive me crazy until I do. I got the setting with my machine. It does not have a second knead and rise. I have never turned out a good loaf using the traditional 2 knead and rise periods like for gluten breads... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Figure Out What Is Glutening Us
TrillumHunter replied to hadabaday2day's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What about Play-Do at the preschool? That's a no-no for gluten-free kids, right? Mine are past that stage so I'm not sure. For you, what about your gallbladder? I struggled with nausea until I had it out. It was full of garbage and making me very sick. I agree with the pp about some of those products but maybe there is another issue? -
ARCHIVED Is gluten-free Rice Chex Actually gluten-free?
TrillumHunter replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is a small community. A suggestion can quickly turn into, "Oh, I don't eat those because they have an issue with cross-contamination." It happens. I've been at this for less than five years and I've seen it over and over. Even Kinnikinnick has been accused of it! Now, General Mills can take that hit. If gluten-free cereals don't pay off for them... -
ARCHIVED Is gluten-free Rice Chex Actually gluten-free?
TrillumHunter replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Feeling bad after eating them is not the same as having a gluten reaction. I feel bad after I eat watermelon but it's not from gluten. Look over your diet carefully before you accuse a company of cross contamination. I'm not picking on you but it's not fair to assume that every tummy rumble after a new food is introduced is gluten. And if you decide... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Ever Sold Food At A Farmer's Market?
TrillumHunter replied to munchkinette's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've looked into it in my state. There are provisions for small, home-based businesses. You should be able to find out what California law has to say about it. Tennessee is pretty open to it but I imagine California has a bit more regulation based on how they are with other things. Another option would be to bake for a small cafe. That's something I'm... -
ARCHIVED Bread Machine
TrillumHunter replied to sasso217's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I love my Zo and use it several times a week. It has instructions for programming for gluten-free bread in the manual. The timing works PERFECTLY for Lorka's bread--a recipe you can find on this site and Recipezaar. Can I tell you this bread is wonderful? The best recipe by far I've tried. I had a cheap bread machine before I was gluten-free and it was... -
ARCHIVED Question About Chick-fil-a
TrillumHunter replied to Nashville's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
If the source of the modified food starch is wheat, it must be labeled as such according to FDA law. Typically you will see it written as modified food starch(wheat). If the label says only modified food starch then it is not sourced from wheat or any of the other allergens as defined by the FDA. There is a lot of out-dated information on the internet...
