Overwhelmed and unable to accept
ravenwoodglass replied to egs1707's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have to agree with Gemini. About 4 years ago I took a job at a local motel cleaning rooms. I was undiagnosed and very ill for most of my life and am very sensitive. A glutening for me means a day of suicidal ideation with severe D followed by a 3 day GI bleed and about 3 weeks of joint and muscle pain and balance issues. The crumb level can be quite high... -

With all the stress you are under this is likely a tension headache. Do you do anything for relaxation? Yoga, meditation etc? That might help. Also if your insurance will cover it acupuncture might be quite beneficial. It helped me a great deal before diagnosis. -

You need to keep in mind that now that you have been diagnosed and have the chance to heal your chances of developing another AI disease goes way down. There are members here who went undiagnosed for decades and didn't develop cancer, diabetes, etc. Are there some that will develop some other AI disease years after they have healed, sure. But they might have... -

In addition to cheese made with yogurt, hard cheeses like cheddar, romano, parmesaen etc are also going to be lactose free. Eggs are also a good source of protein if you eat them. Do bear in mind that celiac can really mess with your head. It can cause depression and anxiety that can get worse for a short time when you first go gluten free. your life... -

Welcome to the board. Celiac is not a death sentence by any means. I was undiagnosed from age 4 to age 46. Words can not describe the hell of the last 15 years before I was finally diagnosed. I am alive and healthier than I have ever been. There are others who also went years and are now doing well. There are some who had complications of cuorse but... -
Cheese Slices

If you haven't had her tested yet please do not go gluten free. Get the celiac testing first as if she does feel better gluten free when she has to go back on gluten for testing she may have much worse symptoms. There will also be a higher risk of false negatives. -
Welcome to the board. You can take probiotics whenever you want to whether you are gluten free or not. Have you had testing for celiac done by an MD? If so what were your results? If not it would be a good idea to stay on gluten and get that testing done. As Karen said the gluten item leaves your body in a short time but if you are celiac the antibody reaction...

how long does gluten stay in your system?
ravenwoodglass replied to 1398-Days's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If the villi took 2 years to recover then folks who had been gluten free for a couple months would not need to do a gluten challenge before a biopsy. The villi actually regrow in a pretty short time but it does take time for us to heal from the effects of the antibodies. There are folks who just don't tolerate dairy whether celiac or not and you may be one... -
So sorry you are having such a very hard time. Have you been back to your GI for retesting to check your antibody levels and the state of your villi? If not it would be a good idea to get that retesting done. While it is quite rare there is the possiblility of refractory celiac. Hopefully that is not the what is going on but if it is the doctor may be able...

Karen, welcome to the board. With everything you have done it is highly unlikely there is gluten still in that room that is causing your issues. Please read the Newbie 101 thread at the top of the Coping page. It will help you pinpoint the cause of your continued issues. How long have you been diagnosed? What are the symptoms you are getting? There could...

Need Neurology Recommendation SF Bay Area/Peninsula
ravenwoodglass replied to AWC-California's topic in Doctors
Sorry it has been so long with no reply for your query. A neurologist is not likely to be able to help. Many are not even familiar with the neuro effects of celiac. What will help is time and being extremely careful to take all the precautions humanly possible to avoid CC. Have you had your B12 levels checked? It is ideal to have past results to compare... -
Applesauce
ravenwoodglass replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes. If the can only lists the item such as beans and perhaps an ingredient like 'citric acid', salt and water it will be fine. If you are talking about something like baked beans read the whole ingredient list. The key is to make sure to read the whole label. Wheat will always be declared and it is very, very rare for something like barley to be hidden... -
Paper Plates?

I have also seen that article and totally agree that board members should reply to things they disagree with in a manner that is not as rude as some of the comments I have seen here. We are supposed to be here to be helpful to others not to make fun of them or cut them to pieces just because we disagree with something they have stated. -
Paper Plates?
ravenwoodglass replied to albauer94's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Excellent suggestion. Having hubby hand wash his own dishes if he is the only one eating gluten also might be adviseable. It might also be a good idea to make a rule that ALL food be eaten at the table. With that going for all family members whether they are gluten free or not. That would make crumbs easy to clean up and end concern about gluten contamination... -
Paper Plates?

Before you buy Taste of the Wild please do a search for reviews and recalls on the products. When you change your pets over to a gluten free food do be sure to do it gradually over a period of a week or two. They can get upset tummys if you switch too suddenly. I switched my dog to the Taste of the Wild a couple months ago but soon after my little dog starting... -
The Indoor/outdoor Cat Dilemma
ravenwoodglass replied to BlessedMommy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I had indoor/outdoor cats for most of my life. Then I moved into the home I am in now and have a neighbor that detests cats. After one was almost killed by him with a bat they became strictly indoor. It did take both of the kitties a while to get used to not going outside but they did accept it after a time. I made sure they had plenty of toys and that did... -
It is highly unlikely that ground beef would contain wheat without it being on the label. Fillers like wheat and soy must be listed if they are added to meat as a filler. The sauce might be a possibility. If you have doubts contact the company that makes it. Wheat has to be declared on the label as it is one of the 7 allergins and barley malt would also...

Welcome to the board Eric. I agree that it would be a good idea for you to avoid those processed to be gluten free until you are well healed. You will also, unfortunately, most likely have had a couple accidental glutenings so you will know better by then if you are reacting to them. Be sure to read the Newbie 101 thread at the top of the Coping section...

Ucsb Student In Fall
ravenwoodglass replied to robertmoser's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Congrats on the acceptance. You may want to talk to a supervisor at the dining hall and see if they are 'celiac aware' and what precautions they take to feed you safely. If they can't feed you safely then they may drop the charges related to food on your bill so you can use that money to feed yourself safely. Many years ago they put my DD in senior housing...- 14 replies

Have you had the celiac panel blood tests? That might be a good first step. Then if those are positive talk to your doctor about your fears of the endoscopy. If the doctor can not lay those fears to rest ask him/her if positive blood work with levels decreasing after being on the diet and symptom relief is enough for him to consider diagnosing you. That...

Rice Is Making Us Sick!
ravenwoodglass replied to Angelmomh2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome to the board. Perhaps try a different brand of rice when you are feeling better. Some of us also have issues with soy so the soy sauce could be the problem. It can be frustrating for a bit as we heal and can be hard to figure out what is giving us issues. A food diary can help pinpoint things that are causing delayed reactions as it isn't always...
