  1. Welcome to the board. My ataxia symptoms came on gradually and progressed over years. I hope your little one does better soon. It is so hard when our little ones are ill and struggling. You may want to start a new thread to ask about ataxia onset so more of us will see the topic and respond.
  2. Welcome to the board. I would suggest that you ask for a referral to a physical therapist. They can help a lot with your gait problems and the foot drop. You have only been gluten free for 9 months and it takes a long time for nerves to heal. You could still see a great deal of improvement so don't lose hope. Those of us with neuro issues can be very sensitive...
  3. Is she taking the name brand Xanax or a generic? I have PTSD and have taken the generic form of Xanax (alprazolam) for a while, when it is needed, because when my doctor prescribed it he checked and the name brand was not gluten free. It may not be the case for her but many doctors over prescribe the Xanax dosage. It I took the amount prescribed I would be...
  4. Well your not alone. I am also 5'4" and would be happy if I could get back to 112lb. I seem to stuck at 105. I was up to almost 115 but then had a job that was not a good fit for me and lost 10lbs. Putting it back is hard. One thing I have done in the past that worked for me (don't know how healthy it was) was eating Wylde pretzels. They are gluten and soy...
  5. You need to talk to your doctor about this. There can be a number of causes some serious, some not. If you are taking supplements with potassium stop until after you discuss this with your doctor.
  6. That is the case for me also. I also have what are called UBO's, or Unidentified Bright Objects which are lesions that are diagnostic of the autoimmune attack on the brain.
  7. I don't know if they make chewing tobacco but after diagnosis I switched to a totally additive free tobacco made by a company called Natural American Spirit. Their cigs and tobacco are just tobacco nothing else. Incidentally I went from being a pack a day smoker to someone who now smokes the equivalent of a pack a week with no effort whatsoever. 3 drags...
  8. My advice to you would be to see a derm. Your nail moons are very white and the skin under your nails very dark. I think that would provide some clues to a dermatologist as to what is going on. Also have you had any vitamin panels done? If you are deficient in some vitamins that can affect the skin and nails. Hopefully some other folks here will be on...
  9. Welcome to the board. I hope I don't overwhelm you with all these questions but here goes. Are your hands sensitive to cold? Have you seen a dermatologist? Do you work with any chemicals or in someplace like a bakery? Do you use any lotions? When you went gluten free did you go with whole unprocessed foods and not add any specialty gluten free products...
  10. Meat that has not had any marinades or seasonings added to it is not a gluten concern at all. If you are new to the diet things will be up and down for a while. Go with whole unprocessed simple foods as much as you can.
  11. I eat it all the time and have no issues. I am very sensitive. What are the ingredients of the items you eat it with? Pizza crust etc. You may be intolerant either to something in one of them or you system may just not be able to handle something else in the pepperoni. I notice you are new so welcome. If your having it on pizza what are you cooking the pizza...
  12. You could very well be celiac or gluten intolerant. Both would require a strict gluten free diet. DO NOT go gluten free or gluten light until you are done with testing. Some of us do have false negative tests so do give the diet a good strict try when testing is done. I hope you are feeling better soon.
  13. That sounds like it could be UBO's or Unidentified bright objects which show up as white spots on an MRI. They can be diagnostic of celiac that has attacked the brain, as was my case. If his spinal tap comes back clear for the MS debris then chances are pretty good that is what is going on with him. Not all doctors are aware of the connection between the...
  14. Chicken, beef, chebe bread, oranges, grapefruit, peas, broccoli, haddock, shrimp, wild rice (which is not rice), cucumbers, carrots, sweet potatos, peppers, apples, pears, peaches and much more is not on that list. Concentrate on what you can eat not what you can't. Then when it is time to add stuff back add one item at a time for a full week to watch for...
  15. When I deglutened my home all I did was vacuum up drawers for crumbs and wash everything down with soap and water. That did the trick in my house.
  16. It will get better. Something that helped me was seeing a physical therapist. It was a big help in regaining my balance. He had a machine that simulated a surfboard and it was a big day when I was able to stand on that without holding on to anything. You might find a PT helps the healing process along. Hopefully it won't be long until you are back to teaching...
  17. I had severe ataxia at diagnosis. It does take some time to heal but I could walk unaided by about 6 months. For a couple years after diagnosis I would be off balance for a couple weeks after a glutening. I have been gluten free now for almost 10 years and now recover much quicker and the ataxia isn't as severe on the rare occasions that I do get glutened...
  18. I second the B12 suggestion but do get the sublingual form of it as it will be absorbed by your oral mucous membranes bypassing the damaged gut. You may also be low in magnesium and should make sure your for sure gluten-free vitamin regime includes it. Your anxiety may resolve a bit gluten free but it can take some time. Those of us with neuro issues do...
  19. They now make pretzel M&Ms. I wonder if CC is now an issue when it wasn't before?
  20. Happy New Year, Raven!

I appreciate you-- for being so encouraging to me all year --ever since I joined the forum back in January. It's been a rocky road, but a healing year-- and you were a part of it. You generously shared your time and experiences with me and from my heart, I thank you. My best always, IH

  21. Hey ravenwood... hope you and your new little buddy have a great Thanksgiving...

Hope your well!!!you take care and I'll see ya around the web!!! LOL

  22. I hope you can get your sister to read some of the info. My neuro was clueless also but instead of saying it was probable MS said it was all in my head and the UBO's were meaningless. "Here's a script for Prozac" If you are a diagnosed celiac your sister should already have been tested by her GP as all first degree relatives are supposed to be tested even...
  23. Did they also do a spinal tap to confirm the MS? Gluten ataxia causes brain lesions like the ones you get with MS but the spinal fluid won't show the 'debris' that MS does. They thought I had MS until I had the spinal done. I hope you continue to do well.
  24. Love your doggie. We have a cocker spaniel. Just noticed you have a birthday near mine too!

  25. Meant to tell you this sooner....Maggie is adorable! Glad you went and rescued her...you are both lucky! You were right---it is taking time, but I am healing slowly but steadily! You're a sweetie and I will always appreciate all of your help and encouragement. Hugs, IH
