  1. I have seen Datem in a couple ingredient labels. Do you know what is it made from?
  2. You can trust them as much as you would any processed food. Many companies do not disclose that there is CC danger from the facilities that the food is processed in and some in fact post copious lists of 'gluten-free' products with no disclaimer or put the disclaimer on it's web site for those computer savvy enough to look for it but not on the package. Walmart...
  3. I had to take them after a bout with pancreatitis. They helped a lot. I only needed to use them for a couple of months. A couple weeks with every meal, then I took them just when I ate something heavy in fat or hard to digest and then was able to stop them. Talk to your doctor but you should be able to stop them after you have healed enough for your body...
  4. IMHO no child should need to take Tums. I wouldn't hesitate to call her ped and request a blood test and evaluation for celiac. Many of us do suffer constipation, sometimes really severe for a while before we start getting D. I have always wondered if the body isn't trying to drain every last nutritent it can in the early stages but I don't know. After...
  5. It sounds like you have DH. And yes I also would think that would be enough to get a reaction. You may luck out and not have the tummy effects but the DH will take a little while to clear up. Be careful what you put on the rash and the bite if you are using an antibiotic ointment. Polysporin is gluten free but Neosporin wasn't last time I checked.
  6. There are pros and cons to the biopsy. It is a procedure that will be preformed under sedation or a general anesthesia. It is rare to have an adverse event but things can happen. It is also possible to have a false negative on the biopsy. This is true for those of any age. This is only my opinion but if it was my 2 year old I would give the diet a good...
  7. There are no regs for the gluten free label. If the amount of gluten is very small or the gluten ingredient is used in processing or as a flavoring agent it does not have to be declared. Personally I believe all gluten should be declared but the 'powers that be' seem to think 'a little bit' won't hurt us. This is of course not the case for many of us. Those...
  8. False negatives are not uncommon especially in children under the age of 4. You could try Enterolab stool testing. They test stool and the testing is done by you sending in a sample. You could also try the diet and see if it helps.
  9. Rice Dream is made using barley. There are a lot of us who do react to it. Barley does not have to be declared on a label when it is only used in small amounts as a flavoring agent or in the processing. Rice Dream used to disclose the barley but removed it from the label some time ago.
  10. I am glad your doctor said to give the diet a try. I wish mine had done that it would have saved me years of misery. Mine just went by the blood tests so it took a long time since I don't show up in bloodwork. Do give it more than a week though. It also would be a good idea to drop dairy until you are feeling better. Welcome to the board and ask any questions...
  11. Thanks I will check it out.
  12. I occasionally, very occasionally since I shouldn't have soy, eat these with no issues. I am pretty sensitive and have never had a CC problem with them. They are gluten free but they do contain lots of soy, casien and other not so great for you stuff. If neither soy nor casien bother you they should be okay.
  13. I remember one person saying that the day they shop they note the price of regular bread that day. I don't know if that is what we have to do or if we can take an average. I do recall someone saying that it could be a red flag to audit but I don't know for sure. I am going to be doing the same thing so hopefully someone here will have done this before and...
  14. See if a store near you carrys Tinkyada (I think that's the spelling) pasta. They make lasanga noodles. Just make it like you would with wheat noodles. I bet no one knows they're gluten free if you don't tell them.
  15. Welcome back. Do check out the products section of the board as there is a lot of info there. The world of gluten free food is expanding daily and much more edible than 8 years ago. Some good brands to look for: Kinnickinnick makes good breads and ready made pizza shells, bagels, doughnuts etc. Gluten Free Pantry has some great mixes. Cakes, breads,...
  16. Most like you have both for the same reason. I had both also and the the inflammation (thats what 'itis' stands for in doctor speak) turned out to be from soy. Other issues that had continued after I had been gluten-free also got better when soy was gone. It is a really good sign that you have felt better since starting the elimination diet. That does...
  17. Have you made sure your shampoos, conditioners, hair coloring (if you use it) lotions, makeup etc are gluten free? Are you strict about CC issues? I refused the drug and it took a while for the antibodies to clear the skin but once I got strict with both stuff I injested and the stuff I used on my skin the outbreaks got much less frequent and eventually...
  18. I agree our labeling regs leave a lot to be desired. Hopefully eventually the law will demand full disclosure of gluten ingredients and cc risks. I get tired of having to call companies. I will say it has gotten much, much better though. The best thing we as individuals can do is write to the FDA and make our needs known. Diagnosis is getting better and as...
  19. You have gotten some great advice already. All I can really add is you need to make your pity party short and turn it into what IMHO it should be anger. These freinds and family are being nothing short of cruel. You need to sit these folks down and hand out some info on celiac, the reactions, the extra kitchen precautions we need to take and the the length...
  20. It sounds like your best bet may be scoping things out before you go. Perhaps if you tell us the city someone may live there or be able to find out safe stores and restaurants for you. I hope your grandfather takes a turn for better and his health improves.
  21. Martha, if you have been on the diet for a year and still have active lesions you have gluten sneaking in somewhere. Before going on a med please recheck all you are eating, make sure you are not getting CC'd in your kitchen, check all scripts and supplements and also check all your toiletries and lotions etc. If you have DH and are completely gluten free...
  22. News like this makes me happy. It is so good that they are finally at least looking for celiac in young people. It would have made such an incredible difference in my childrens lives if the knowledge we have today was here 15 to 20 years ago. I am glad you have a few gluten-free folks in your local peers it seems it would make it easier to deal with.
  23. When you decide to go off the PPIs do talk to your doctor about how to taper off. One reason I chose not to take them is that when stopped they often have a 'rebound' effect which can make it difficult to get off them. I hope you get things figured out soon and are feeling better.
  24. It is best when in doubt to call the maker. If this was just wine it would be safe but if the Arbor Mist is wine + ? I would err on the side of caution and call before consuming.
  25. I was thought to have it for a long time but it turned out to be the celiac brain impact. All my MS symptoms resolved within a few months. The only thing that remains is balance issues, which are actually gluten ataxia, but those are still continueing to improve.
