ARCHIVED Baking Flour?
celiac-mommy replied to Electra's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I hear ya! I discovered this by accident actually. I had gone and purchased 6-7 different types of flours to create different mixes from. I tried the featherlight mixture and didn't like that one either--I know a lot of people here do though, so if you haven't tried that one... I had almost given up when I thought of mixing the 2 I had left, I was amazed... -

ARCHIVED Can Not Stop Gaining Weight!
celiac-mommy replied to b91hd7fjk's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have to disagree completely. I have lost a considerable amount of weight and maintained for a long time. If you are only eating 900cal/day, it's NOT enough. Your body goes into starvation mode and actually holds onto averything you put in because it doesn't know when it's going to be nourished again. For your height and weight, your BMI is 24.2 which... -
ARCHIVED Silicone Spatulas & Plastic Sippy Cups?
celiac-mommy replied to chlobo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Why do you have to replace the plastic colander? I never did, it's not scratched up or anything, just used to drain things and always washed in the dishwasher on the sanitize cycle--I'm just curious, wondering if I missed something. I totally agree with everything else. Also, if your silicone spatulas have a wooden handle, I would replace. I always get... -
ARCHIVED Baking Flour?
celiac-mommy replied to Electra's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I agree, if you just use the brown rice flour, it will be gritty. The addition of the other flours in the Bob's mix takes the grit away, but if you just use the Bob's flour mix straight, you get the bean aftertaste. The combo of the 2 fixes both problems for me. I use the Bob's Redmill brown rice flour as well--We live near the factory so it's pretty cheap... -
ARCHIVED Appetite Suppressants
celiac-mommy replied to SunnyDyRain's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I previously had a binge eating issue and always at night, these are a few of my tricks to prevent the binging (its been almost 1 year since the last one!!!) -Sugar-free Swiss Miss in 16 oz in boiling water--have to sip slowly and the extra water fills up the tummy. Plus it takes care of the chocolate fix. -Brush teeth after dinner-I don't want to have... -
We do all of the same as mamaw, I have a 6yo and I let her help me with the lunches. We have a small thermos that we use ~3x week. Whatever I put in it, I heat it to boiling point before I put into the thermos, then it's still pretty warm when her lunch comes around. We also make 'super' quesadillas with whatever cheese she feels like, black beans, chicken...

ARCHIVED Baking Flour?
celiac-mommy replied to Electra's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I replace all the flours in ALL my recipes with 1/2 Bobs Redmill gluten-free flour mix and 1/2 brown rice flour=no brown rice grit and no bean flour aftertaste. My relatives at Christmas couldn't believe that all the desserts and pastries I made were all gluten-free. I've also made a peach crisp with it that was TDF! Good luck! -
ARCHIVED Messy Non-celiac Babies/toddlers
celiac-mommy replied to ItchyMeredith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Our house is mostly gluten-free, our DD is the only one who has a positive diagnosis and we have one of those messy little 2y/o boys (husband too ) Son gets LOTS of gluten at preschool and a small amount at home, but I'm not one for all the junk food that is the gluten diet so we don't have any of that stuff in the house-I try to find alternatives, like... -

ARCHIVED Crp And Celiac, Cardiomyopathy Too?
celiac-mommy replied to Lisa16's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I read the article earlier, I don't fully agree with the gal. The studies were fairly small and I'm not really sure that the findings were definite. To me it read like they still weren't 100% sure of the outcomes and although they found the antibodies in the pericardium, the person could have had the inflammitory process, developed bloody pericarial fluid... -

ARCHIVED How Do I Cook Eggplant?
celiac-mommy replied to misdiagnosed6yrs's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Good to know! I wish I had talked with you before I watched that show, I probably would have tried it--even though, I still don't like the stuff I'm always trying to try new things! -
ARCHIVED My Husband Just Doesn't Understand
celiac-mommy replied to kali-mist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think the difference here is that your husband is supportive and hers is NOT. I'm sorry too, but I have to go with fiddle-faddle, (maybe not leave, but get more drastic) I've been reading this from the beginning, and thinking the same thing. It doesn't appear, from what you wrote that he has your best interest at heart. It's one thing to not be able... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Cook Eggplant?
celiac-mommy replied to misdiagnosed6yrs's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You're supposed to 'drain' the eggplant before cooking it, it contains a lot of liquid. I watched a program on the food network one day because I was determined to cook something with eggplant. I was quite disappointed to learn what a pain in the rear it was and then found out at the end that it's pretty much a waste of time because there's basically no... -
ARCHIVED Crp And Celiac, Cardiomyopathy Too?
celiac-mommy replied to Lisa16's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lisa, I spoke with our head cardiologist/medical director and he is not aware of any correlation between celiac and hypertrophic CM, He doesn't believe there's a link at all, but like I said before, a long history of hypertension will cause the heart muscle to thicken. Hope this helps some. -

ARCHIVED Crp And Celiac, Cardiomyopathy Too?
celiac-mommy replied to Lisa16's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've not heard of celiac causing HCM, but I will ask one of our cardiologists today and re-post. If you have had uncontrolled hypertension for a number of years, this can cause significant thickening of the myocardium and look like HCM. This I see daily, unfortunately. You have to find a med that will work for you, many have to go thru a lot to find the... -

ARCHIVED Skin Wrecked Due To Weight Loss....
celiac-mommy replied to Babygirl6915's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Unfortunately there's no "miracle" potion to make the skin retract. Weight training helps a lot, but everyone is different. All of my saggy skin toned up-finally-BUT the stuff on my abs hasn't and probably won't--pregnancyx2 plus the weight loss. You have to be patient, keep exercising, cardio AND weight training and you should see a difference eventually... -
ARCHIVED Adding Healthier Flours To Baking
celiac-mommy replied to Joni63's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I do use them to replace any flour in any recipe. I haven't really used any of the gluten-free cookbooks I bought when my DD was diagnosed. There are a lot of ingredients needed for most of the recipes and I'm not a big fan of that--and mostly specialty ingredients. I most frequently use my Better Homes and Gardens cookbook and I convert every recipe.... -
