  1. I think my church is the potluck capital of Southern California but I just stopped attending them. I show up after the food and just attend the event that follows the potluck. The other option (which I have also done) is to just bring your own food - anything you want - and eat with your friends. At our last Spring Tea they made an effort to accommodate...
  2. I find it particularly sad and also disturbing that some churches don't make the effort to meet the needs of people who actually *have* needs! Remember that churches are made up of imperfect people. Our church has lost people whose needs we didn't meet and gained people whose needs we did meet. Somewhere out there is a church where you can plug in...
  3. Hope it went well!
  4. Yup. I can SO relate! We went from doctor to doctor when my daughter was 9 months old because she had such a terrible cough and was gasping for air. But she was chubby and looked healthy and they kept brushing me off as a new first time mom. Turns out she had whooping cough, even though she was up to date on her vaccinations. Apparently none of them...
  5. Absolutely. But don't get your hopes up TOO high about finding a doctor who is knowledgeable about Celiac. Some are, but many are not to the point of being cluelessly negligent. If you don't feel the need to have the condition confirmed by tests (the forum is full of discussions pro and con) then just try a totally gluten free diet and see what happens...
  6. I agree with Janet about the McCormick products. Some Costco chickens say they are gluten free and some don't. Depends on your local Costco. If yours says it is gluten free, it is. For what it's worth, my local Costco sells gluten free chicken, and we eat them all the time with no problems.
  7. Both situations can be landmines, but of the two, friends is probably worse. They may very well never "get it." More and more restaurants have gluten free menus and the employees get at least some training. You have to judge each one individually. I have had good experiences at Outback, but not everyone has. Most restaurants with gluten free...
  8. Watch Dogs 101 on Animal Planet or visit this site Open Original Shared Link. They discuss several different breeds every episode and rate each one on several things, including whether or not the breed trends to make a good family dog. There is a LOT to know!
  9. In addition to all of the above, wash their dishes, utensils, pots, pans, whatever with a separate sponge or cloth than what you use for yours. Never the twain shall meet. Wash your stuff FIRST so their stuff doesn't contaminate the dishwater. NEVER wipe your hands on a kitchen towel. Use a paper one. If you need to economize and use it over, buy a pattern...
  10. I've been offline for awhile due to computer and internet problems, but I'm back now (I hope) and had to throw my 2 cents in here. I have been to Outback twice since going gluten free and both experiences were without incident. I am really hoping to keep the string going because my friends from church are taking me there on Saturday for my birthday...
  11. The AdSense Ad is at the top of the page as I read this - subject to change of course. I understand completely what others have posted about making the ingredients undigestible, but if I were taking a survey about the believability of the ad (seen on ABC news - gluten free and calorie free) I would rate it as unbelievable as possible. "As seen on" whatever...
  12. You can be sure that if they are aware of such things as "B lists" they are aware that invitations are supposed to include significant others. It sounds like you are taking it well! I like those glasses of lemonade you are making with the lemon tossed at you!
  13. I have never been able to eat bananas. They cause bloating and hours of discomfort. Banana bread however, is OK. It must have something to do with the baking/heat.
  14. Welcome! In addition to what all the others said, preschool is cross-contamination hell. Cracker and cereal snacks, pasta crafts, PLAY DOH, everyone else's sandwich for lunch, birthday treats, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum. Every hand that touches any of those things contaminates every other surface they touch until they are washed. The teachers and the...
  15. We currently don't have one, but have had in the past and I do miss the convenience. Several of my husband's relatives do not have one. One SIL and one cousin choose to wash by hand because they don't like the job the dishwashers do! (BTW - neither household has kids!) If the amount of hand dish washing detergent available on the store...
  16. Never mind his own health - for the health of the restaurant patrons he and all other employees should never be touching food with their bare hands!
  17. What exactly *is* his job? Waiter? Bus tables? Host? Cook? If he takes precautions to avoid contaminating himself and has not been getting sick, then he should be OK. On the other hand, if he has been routinely showing sign of getting glutened in spite of his best efforts to prevent it, then maybe it's best that he move on. Last week we...
  18. I have used it in the past, but not for decades. It is not recommended if there is a possibility of getting pregnant. It has a bit of an oily feel to it and does make some people reek of garlic. It feels warm when applied and does relieve some joint pain. I haven't read anything on it in ages - forget it was still around!
  19. I just came home from Costco and while there I saw a new product called Sof
  20. Rice Dream claims to be gluten free but it isn't.
  21. I believe that EVERYTHING you consume ends up in breast milk, including gluten.
  22. It is not uncommon for blood tests to show a false negative. Your test was probably negative because after five weeks of not eating gluten you were no longer producing antibodies for the test to detect. If your villi are being damaged, it is not wise to eat any gluten no matter what your test results are and no matter how you feel. Read the signature...
  23. You apply the lotion with your hands, so now your hands (and for that matter the rest of you) are now contaminated with a thin coating of wheat which will transfer to anything you touch including lip gloss, dental floss, finger foods, etc. It's just safest not to use products that contain wheat.
  24. There is a high calorie nutrient dense gluten free supplement called Benecalorie that may work for her. If you can't find it locally, look online. It is quite reasonably priced.
  25. I've never heard of that either, but just because gluten is not a virus or bacteria doesn't mean that chlorine can't break the chemical bonds in the protein molecule. It would be most unpleasant to be washing everything in even very diluted bleach, and the fumes would have to be unhealthy to your skin and eyes and lungs and all that.
