ARCHIVED Back On Track (And What Next?)
GFinDC replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
And what next? Stay on track! Keep the throttle down but ease off on the corners. Since your diet is working for you right now, stick with it. If you want to try adding thing back in, take it slow. Try adding one new thing per week. Being in a hurry to get sick again doesn't make a lot of sense. So take your time and add things slowly. Slowly... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Know Where To Start!
GFinDC replied to JenniferR's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
HI Jennifer, I know the doc said he doesn't have H.Pylori, but since he has ulcers he is probably susceptible to getting H.Pylori. One estimate I saw said that about 40 to 50% of people have it. A couple of non-prescription treatments/preventatives would be a good idea IMHO. Mastic gum is one and DGL licorice is another. They are both fairly inexpensive... -
ARCHIVED First Time Poster
GFinDC replied to kkenny's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI Kkenny, You could go ahead and get endoscopy with biopsies for celiac testing. And get the celiac antibodies first. There isn't a whole lot of benefit to diagnosis for USA'ers right now. But you could be become of part of a statistic, whoop whoop! In the future maybe things will change though. Celiac clinical trials are one thing that usually... -
ARCHIVED Is Diagnosis Necessary?
GFinDC replied to uglyhen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Kitty, Several members (or more) have had their gall bladders removed. Seems to me like gall bladder issues are one of the side affects for some celiacs who aren't gluten-free yet. I have had pain in my left side in the past, not gall bladder though. My pain took about 9 months to go away after going gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED The Pieces Dont Fit- Help!
GFinDC replied to kvtlove's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Did the doctor test you for NCGI? I'll give you the answer, no. Why? Because it hasn't been acknowledged by the medical community long enough for them to figure out a test for it. That doesn't mean people aren't walking around with NCGI every day though, and being told by their doctors that they don't have a problem. So, the thing to do is test... -
Hi Mac, You could also try taking Betaine HCL before your meals. It raises the stomach acidity. So if you have low stomach acid it will help with digestion. You are still in pre-diagnosis and still eating gluten right? Another thing that may help is eliminating dairy from your diet. Many of us can't digest dairy at first. Cutting out soy might help...

ARCHIVED I Am Celebrating Today :)
GFinDC replied to islandmomma's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oops, sorry Jan, that should have said 90 second not 9 seconds for the microwave buns, so corrected! Sorry about H being a pain. Some celiacs go entirely grain free and find they get along better that way. I tried it myself for a while but it didn't make any difference to me. But some diabetics follow the gluten-free diet also, and do a very low carb... -
ARCHIVED Dr. Stunned By My Results :)
GFinDC replied to Ann1231's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's good news on the liver enzymes going down. But your doc is a little out of touch. Elevated liver enzymes are fairly common with celiac disease from my understanding. And they tend to return to normal after starting the gluten-free diet. -

Welcome to the forum Jan! Gluten-free goodies are fun, but they do tend to pack more calories than their regular gluteny counterparts. So don't go over board on them to start with if you are concerned about your weight going up. Sometimes people are concerned about not gaining enough weight. I put in a few tips below and the bottom link is for a... -
When you get older you can fall asleep sitting in a chair. That should help.

ARCHIVED In Need Of Help Please!
GFinDC replied to rwb9wg's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, It really can take months to a year or more to get better on the gluten-free diet. However you should start having some improvement in the first 6 months of being 100% gluten-free. If you still have symptoms after 6 months, it makes sense to consider other possibilities, including removing other foods from your diet or even other medical conditions... -
ARCHIVED Help! Have Had Stomach Issues For Years, now Maybe Think It Could Be Celiac?
GFinDC replied to kehoban's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks Madagascar That's an interesting study. It's surprising to me how many of their subjects complained the gluten-free diet wasn't working for them, but in reality they weren't following it! Or not following it correctly, letting a little gluten slip in here and there. Or some were just outright eating gluten. People are funny sometimes. -

GFinDC replied to rwb9wg's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
HI, If you have celiac disease you won't improve a lot until you get all gluten out of your diet. That means even small amounts like from a shared toaster or shared peanut butter jar etc. It may be difficult in a college environment if you are on a meal plan. But it makes sense to talk to your academic adviser to see if the school can accommodate your... -
Hi Spryng, I can't do any grapes, so no wine or anything with grapes. Took me a while to figure that one out. I thought it was the alcohol in the wine, but it was the grapes instead. Oh well. A few more things that you might want to pick up on your shopping trip. Pepto Bismol Milk of Magnesia Betaine HCL DGL (Deglysterized licorice...

Hi JAS2, That's one of the advantages of getting diagnosed with celiac, you do know it is a serious disorder. Celiac is an auto-immune condition, which means the body creates an immune system response to it's own tissues. Those immune system antibodie cells stay active for a while, and they keep attacking the body. They don't disappear the day after...

ARCHIVED Does Everything Make Me Sick?
GFinDC replied to clsmith's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
HI CL, You can find lists of the top 8 food allergens on the web. They are a good place to start looking for possible problems. You can also read people's signatures on the forum to find some foods that bother others. We don't all react to the same foods so it is an individual thing to figure out. -
ARCHIVED Dgp Question....
GFinDC replied to roomorganizing's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She may not have the worst symptoms of celiac disease yet, but that doesn't mean she wouldn't develop worsening symptoms over time if she continues to eat gluten. Her doctor isn't thinking quite right. He needs to consider the idea of preventative care once in awhile. Does he take his car to the shop when the check engine light comes on? Or wait until... -
ARCHIVED Help! Have Had Stomach Issues For Years, now Maybe Think It Could Be Celiac?
GFinDC replied to kehoban's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
thanks for all the info Madagscar, nice post! One little nit pick, and just to clarify, if there is a change from stopping eating gluten, then it is probably because gluten is causing a reaction. Even if the symptoms don't resolve completely, a change means something is going on. People with no reaction to gluten shouldn't have any change... -

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Celiac Symptoms Please Help!
GFinDC replied to Liquidceliac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi LC, If you want to know if you have celiac do get all the testing done before going gluten-free. You can do it later but you would have to eat gluten again for some period of time and that might not be fun. Cutting out all soy is a good idea, but I suggest you also cut out all diary. At least for a few months to see if your health improves. It... -

Hi Ann, Please do stay around. We are actually a pretty nice bunch! if you have a lump on your throat, and are having hyperthyroid symptoms, please consider testing for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the thyroid. The docs can test you for TPO antibodies to see if you have Hashimoto... -

ARCHIVED 3.5 Year Sore Throat – At My Wits End...any Ideas?
GFinDC replied to merpaul's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI Merpaul, Welcome to the forum! the first thing I thought of when you described your throat being sore was Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Hashji's Thyroiditis is an auto-immune disease that attacks the thyroid. It can cause sore throat and eventually can lead to destruction of the thyroid and hypo-thyroid symptoms. Sometimes it cause swelling on the side...- 2 replies
