ARCHIVED Before I Visit The Doc...
mushroom replied to jabberwife's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am glad you were pleased with your visit and like the doc. His approach does sound reasonable. However, just because you do not have those two particular genes does not mean you do not have celiac. In the rest of the world there are other genes recognized as being celiac genes. Nora would be able to tell you what they were. -
Most of the latest estimates I have read have increased the number to 1 in 100. I don't have citations for this statement.

His experience must be pretty limited --I had a friend it happened to twice!! -
ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
mushroom replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I thought exactly the same thing. Except I know they had only me because they were still trying for a boy, and since I couldn't accomplish that pheat without expensive surgery, I'd darned well better make meselph usephul. -
I used to smoke when I was bored, too (at least I didn't have to go outside), but then I substituted food as a cure for boredom--tired of working, get up and get something to eat. That didn't work out too well either!!! Bored with what you're doing? Go to the water cooler and have a glass of water, maybe also a chat. And you need the fluids. And that...

Hi Em: love and {{{{hugs}}} to you. Thank you for taking the time to share with us a little of the celebration of your dad's life. I had never seen your dad before, but from just the short clips shown I could see that he was a very special person who will be greatly missed. Incidentally, you looked great!!! Take care, luv, and enjoy the time with... -
ARCHIVED After You Stopped Smoking Did You Get Worse?
mushroom replied to terps19's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am sorry you have been having such a hard (and expensive) time. However, do look for the silver linings in all of this. If you are celiac and continued with gluten you would probably have incurred many more medical problems and bills. Also, if you had continued smoking, same thing. You are going to be so much healthier now than you would have been if... -

ARCHIVED Contamination From Bacon?
mushroom replied to Diva1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Initially it's very hard to get your head around the idea that some things that you "know" don't have gluten, actually DO have gluten; things like bacon, ham, marmalade, stock, spices, it just boggles the mind really to know that you have to look at ALL labels because they sneak it in everywhere. -
ARCHIVED Soy Protein Vs Soy Lecithin
mushroom replied to Lexi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
True, dat, which is why I wish I could eat it. I am today for the first time making gluten free choc. chip cookies (Alton Brown's recipe) since I have finally got some Enjoy Life chocolate chips. Packages of these are definitely going home with me!!! I have recently found some things which use corn lecithin as an emulsifier and, while corn is still not... -
ARCHIVED Legumes
mushroom replied to Evie4's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So true. I used to have a baked bean recipe that I used to call "Fartless Beans" but don't know what happened to it. It was a Boston Baked Bean recipe, and we even took them on a houseboat with another couple!! However, there is a product on the market called Beano which aids in digesting beans. I don't know its gluten free status. -

ARCHIVED After You Stopped Smoking Did You Get Worse?
mushroom replied to terps19's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Because I quit so long ago (a 2-pack-a-day smoker), I had never thought about any link with smoking. But on reflection it was only after I quit smoking that my severe GI symptoms began, initially always when I ate Mexican food to which I had not previously been exposed. I blamed the corn in the tortillas. Of course I eventually found out that it was both... -

OMG, psillies, I went to the mall today, something I almost nevah do, and all I could do was think of Em; I looked at all the clothes offered for sale and said, jeez, I must be getting old, all this stuff looks like it would have worked well at Em's trailer trash party ('cept there were no penis earrings) -

ARCHIVED Good Lord, I'm Scared Reading This Website!
mushroom replied to AmyDel's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
No need to be scared; just be happy you were diagnosed now rather than later. There's always a silver lining in there somewhere No better time to start eating what is healthy for you and the new baby than right now --get him off to a good start! Fortunately, the food you should be eating is very nutritious and full of what baby needs; meat, fish... -
Thanks. Sure hope your DEXA scan comes out improved also.
-
This is a break-out-the-champagne day!! I just received the DEXA scan results, and the doctor who did not want to even refer me for a DEXA scan because "you have a compression fracture, of course you have osteoporosis", and who prescribed calcitonin salmon nasal spray for me, now admits that I have normal bone density, no osteoporosis or osteopenia!! :D...

ARCHIVED Anyone Diagnosed With Ibs
mushroom replied to LisaaaNoel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have to agree with Lizard. It is such a joke, really, if it weren't so deleterious to our health and hadn't caused so much suffering. This diagnosis should be obliterated from every doctor's vocabulary! -
I am currently weighing my options for when I get back the results of my DEXA scan which I know are bad. I just wondered what all those of you who have osteoporosis take, if anything, besides the obvious of Vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, zinc? What do you all think about the new so-called bone-building meds, and do they really do that?? Are there any downsides...
