ARCHIVED Benefits Of Living Gluten-Free
cmom replied to Glutin-Free Man's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Being able to go places where the bathroom is more than 7 ft away; enjoying life as a whole again without as much fear; using imodium rarely instead of daily; feeling good again (which I didn't for years); also learning how to cook in new ways. That's just the beginning.... -
:ph34r:I also have those dreams where I eat a huge amount of gluten food (seem to forget about celiac at the time) and then realize in horror what I have done. What a relief to wake up!

You are so lucky, not b/c of the ER trip, but b/c the dr was celiac savvy. Most of the doctors I have dealt with don't think gluten is the cause of anything unless it's strictly gastro. Even my gastro's office told me that sinus problems and/or headaches don't have anything to do with celiac.

ARCHIVED Out Of Body Sensation

Yes, Sue, the part about causing osteoporosis is true. I have confirmed osteopenia due to not absorbing calcium caused by damaged intestines. I have not had a recent bone scan, but hope that things have improved since being gluten-free. -

ARCHIVED Wal-mart Brand Canned Vegies
cmom replied to Julysailor's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I understand all that, Peter. However, my gripe is that the Great Value labels have gone from gluten free to "may contain wheat, etc." On the canned and frozen products I have checked, it does not say "naturally gluten free" even. I often will try products that say "manufactured in a facility that also...." but will not consume those that say "may contain... -
or....they might see how well you handle/assert yourself and how much self-control you have...could be a postive employee attribute

ARCHIVED Wal-mart Brand Canned Vegies
cmom replied to Julysailor's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not sure what is going on with WalMart and its Great Value products. It was so nice when many of their products had the words "gluten free" on them. Now, however, the past few weeks I have noticed that the labels have been changed on virtually all of them. Now the statement says, "May contain wheat". I have found this on virtually everything from... -
A friend of mine at work last week was excited about making a gluten-free carrot cake for me to share (she has made gluten-free dishes so I can partake before). She was telling me what she put in it (she likes to be sure). When she was listing the ingredients, one of them was barley. I had to tell her I couldn't eat it. She was so glad I did..she had...

ARCHIVED Not Just What You Eat But Where
cmom replied to esammarie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow, that is awesome! Not a chance of that happening where I am...they love their doughnuts...There are a couple of people who do try to see that I have something at a pitch-in though -
I have dreamed of eating a whole pizza or a hamburger with the bun and then realizing I shouldn't have and wondering how and when I am going to be sick. It is such a relief when I wake up and know that I really didn't do it!

ARCHIVED Any One Here Have Foot Pain When They Eat Gluten?
cmom replied to Lynayah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been gluten-free (to the best of my ability) for the past several years. I still suffer from pretty intense pain all over upon standing after sitting for over 30 mins. Also, suffer from severe foot pain upon standing the first few minutes when getting out of bed. My left foot has been broken twice and after visiting the podiatrist b/c I believed... -

ARCHIVED Anyone Not Able To Work Because Of Celiac Disease And Related Conditions?
cmom replied to GlutenGuy36's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The job I have now as a teaching assistant ijs perfectly suited for me. If I have any intestinal flareups, I can excuse myself and tend to them. However, there are without a doubt, some jobs I could never hold such as assembly line worker, cashier in a busy store, highway worker, etc. I must have a job where I can hit the restoom if necessary. They did... -
I have a separate dr and GI. My dr treated me for over 6 yrs and could not find my problem. It took the GI 2 visits and I had a diagnosis.

My family loves to attend the Fall Fest in Evansville where they have a whole street shut off and nothing but food booths up and down the street. Everything from buffalo to alligator (anything unusual, as well as the common fair foods). I always leave without having tried anything as I cannot be sure if it's safe.

ARCHIVED Being Around Gluten Foods Still Sets It Off?
cmom replied to Jonbo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This may be TMI, but several yrs ago, I was going with my parents to a play my brother was directiing out of town, and they stopped at a steakhouse to eat on the way. As soon as we got inside the restaurant and I smelled the food, I had an immediate urge to go to the restroom. It was so powerful that I did not make it in time. I had to call my DH to come... -
ARCHIVED Will Celiac Ever Be A Trait And Not A Disease?
cmom replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I have a MIL that continually says that I "won't" eat certain things, but never I "can't" like she thinks I'm trying to get attention. She gets aggravated when we take her somewhere and don't stop to eat. My DH has said several times that I can't just anywhere and she always says, "Well, she can eat green beans and corn....blah blah blah". And sometimes... -
I would strongly advise NOT trying Rheaban for diarrhea. I tried it a couple times and both times made it even worse. This was pre-gluten-free so I didn't read the label. For some reason, it had the opposite effect on me.
-
I think the "I DON'T eat that" as opposed to the "I CAN'T eat that" depends on your situation and the people around you. In my case, around my DH's family, "I DON'T" would be perceived as me thinking I'm too "good" to eat their food. The "I CAN'T" helps remind them that I have a medically-required diet.
