  1. I can offer advice as both a parent of a young child with Celiac and a first grade teacher. First, I will speak as a parent. I gave my son's teacher some emergency candy in case of unexpected birthday treats. He loves Hershey bars so I gave his teacher a 6 pack. I also stuck a box of Amy's frozen gluten free mac and cheese in the freezer in the teacher...
  2. The strawberry chex are really good too! I am addicted.
  3. I also wanted to add a huge THANK YOU to everyone on this forum. I could have not gotten through the last year without everyone's helpful advice. This forum has saved my sanity and given me hope. A diagnosis of Celiac disease is not the end of the world. It is just the beginning of a healthy, wonderful life! This forum helped me realize that. Thank...
  4. My son has had Celiac Disease for one year. This time last year I was a hysterical mother thinking this was the end. I remember the exact moment his doctor called me to tell me it was Celiac (I was at work - not the best place to receive that news). I had never even heard of Celiac. But, I went home that day and threw out all gluten containing food in...
  5. Dinty Moore makes two microwavable meals that state they are gluten free on the package. They are beef stew and ham and potatoes. Also, Weight Watchers Smart Ones Santa Fe Beans and Rice is gluten free (says so on the package). Kid's Kitchen has a microwavable beans and wieners cup that is gluten free. Oscar Meyer hot dogs are gluten free (I'm not sure...
  6. I do the same thing CeliacMom2008 does. I buy Great Value brand over almost all name brands just because it takes the guess work out of it. Grocery shopping does get easier. It used to take me hours but now I'm in and out like I was before we went gluten free. I just stick to the same brands and I know that Kraft and UniLever will always disclose gluten...
  7. My son was always constipated. But, the first week of going gluten free he had terrible diarrhea. Everyone told me it was his body cleaning itself out and getting rid of toxins. I don't know if there is any truth to that but it makes sense.
  8. Thank you Juliebove! I made your simple "Campbell's" chicken noodle soup today and my son loved it. He ate two big bowls. I used Rachel Ray's chicken stock in a box (says gluten free on the box), Hormel canned chicken breast (says gluten free on the can), and Tinkyada fettucini noodles broken into 2 inch pieces. I had to add lots of salt to get it to...
  9. Some doctors are a joke. Mine certainly is. When I went in to have my Celiac bloodtests done he told me he only tests the elderly for Celiac. When I told him my young son was diagnosed he acted like he didn't believe it. When I tried to change doctors word must have gotten back to him. His office called me and asked why I wanted to make an appointment...
  10. Reading all of these wonderful breakfasts and lunches your childrean eat makes me so sad that my son won't eat any of that. He is so picky. I feel like a terrible mom when I pack him a hot dog and Stax everyday for his lunch but it's the only thing he will eat at school
  11. Wow! That is terrible! When my son and I ate there a few weeks ago they served a bun on his hamburger that he ordered off the gluten free menu. I asked if the bun was gluten free and the waitress said yes. Then, after a few seconds, the waitress took the burger away from my son after he had taken a bite and said she needed to double check. Of course...
  12. That sounds like my son! He is not a breakfast eater at all. It's a struggle each morning to get something in his belly and he doesn't eat lunch until noon. He usually eats half a stick of string cheese and a glass of Sunny D. He would eat chips if I would let him but he gets them in his lunch and he is restricted on how much corn he gets each day. Once...
  13. Yum! That sounds really good! We also love Sweet Baby Rays but I have never thought to make a BBQ chicken pizza!
  14. My son takes Gummi-Vites. I get them at Walmart.
  15. The symptoms are similar with Celiac and gluten intolerance. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but really the only difference in the two are villi damage. With Celiac you have it, with intolerance you don't. In my personal experience, my symptoms are much less severe when I accidentally consume gluten. I have been totally gluten free for about 7 months...
  16. I don't agree with that at all. My son's symptoms have gone away now that he has been gluten free for almost one year. He was diagnosed Celiac through bloodtest and biopsy. For a child of his age, both his pediatrician and GI said they were shocked at his high numbers and damaged small intestine. There is no doubt about it that he has Celiac. He ate...
  17. I had to give up my favorite salsa because I was unsure of its gluten status (lists natural flavors). My emails to the company went unanswered but someone must have been reading emails over there! The jar now says Gluten Free! I am so happy that I can eat it again! It really pays to contact companies with questions or comments! They are listening!
  18. Yes! One of my 8 year old son's main symptoms was leg pain. He would have muscle cramps and knee and ankle pain. He would sleep with a heating pad every night. Everyone told me it was "gowing pains". The funny thing was he was not growing. The pain has gotten much better now that he is gluten free. I can't remember the last time he complained. And...
  19. Could this be why I don't have stomach aches and diarrhea anymore? Before I went gluten free I would get terrible stomach pains and almost immediate D. I don't get that anymore. I can't remember the last time I had D in fact. Now when I have been glutenated it's more like aches and pains, headache, muscle ache, fatigue.
  20. Your story sounds similar to mine. When my son was diagnosed last year at age 8 he was only 43 pounds. Have you tried the gluten free diet with him? Gluten light just doesn't cut it. You must eliminate all gluten from his diet (unless you want further Celiac testing then he must stay on gluten but I'm sure you already know that). If you do decide to...
  21. I am one of those parents who has had trouble with vaccinations. My perfectly healthy 17 month old who has never, ever been sick got very ill after her last round of vaccinations. She got the MMR, chicken pox, and flu vaccines all at once. That night her legs were so sore she wouldn't walk and that lasted two days. She ran a fever for the next two weeks...
  22. Wow! Everyone has great responses. My son's birthday is next month and I am in the same boat. This will be his first gluten free birthday party so I have been researching. In the book Living Gluten Free for Dummies it is suggested that no special gluten free food be served to all. For example, gluten free pizza served to all kids, because it does have...
  23. My son loved Campbells chicken noodle soup before his dx (no chunks, no lumps, no visible veggies, etc). Could you please post exact ingredients, measurements and brands? When it comes to making homemade anything, I need directions appropriate for children I'm a bit slow in that area! Thanks!
  24. I had a similar experience around Halloween when I gave in and had some Twizzlers. I felt fine and I actually felt bad about feeling fine (if that makes sense). I was also curious as to why I did not get sick. Around Christmas I ate a bunch of candy that I later found out had wheat gluten. I was very ill that time. I thought I was coming down with...
  25. Go with your gut instinct. I insisted my son get a round of blood tests at his 8 year check up and I am so glad I did because that's when Celiac and the food allergies came up. Before, his doctor wanted to put him on Mira lax for the constipation and Pediasure for the slow growth!!! Diarrhea is not normal and neither is constipation. It means something...
