  1. It does get much easier over time. You will become a pro at it and pretty soon you will be giving other "newbies" advice! I remember the first time I went grocery shopping after my son's diagnosis. I stood in the middle of Walmart with tears streaming down my cheeks. I had no idea what I was going to feed my poor child! Now I am in and out of the store...
  2. Just bought a bag of Ore-Ida Fast Food French Fries and noticed it says Gluten Free! Yippee! One more thing to make my life easier!
  3. I had KP on my arms and legs. My dermatologist gave me a salicylic acid lotion to use but that didn't work. The only thing that got rid of it was going gluten free.
  4. I am also from a small town in MO. No one knows what gluten is or celiac disease (until I educate them!). Luckily we do have a small store that sells gluten free staples like pasta and flour. I have to drive almost an hour to get to a Whole Foods.
  5. I also have (had) IBS. The gluten free diet has helped me tremendously. My bloodtests were also negative but when I went to an allergist for a second opinion she diagnosed me with gluten intolerance. If the biopsy results come back negative try the diet and see how you feel. If you feel better then it might be gluten intolerance (which there is no test...
  6. Easy, Quick, Inexpensive Lasagna -jar of Great Value Traditional pasta sauce -Tinkyada lasagna noodles -Great Value 2% cottage cheese -Great Value Italian shredded cheese - pound of ground beef Cook noodles as you brown ground beef, layer all ingredients, cook @375 for 30 minutes, let sit for 30 minutes to firm up, serve with Chebe frozen rolls...
  7. It certainly sounds like it could be Celiac. Celiac has so many different symptoms. Your son dropping down the weight/height chart is a big warning flag. That was my son's main symptom. He dropped until he was no longer on the charts! You are smart to get him tested for Celiac. Let us know what happens!
  8. My son was tested for food allergies when he was 8 so my situation is a bit different. I found it very helpful and I would recommend allergy testing for anyone who thinks food might be causing reactions. After it was determined he is allergic to wheat, corn, soy, egg whites, and others he was put on a rotation diet. His GI thought it would be too difficult...
  9. If you have a Walmart in your area their Great Value brand will label a product gluten free if it is. There is a list floating around that names the companies that will not "hide" gluten in "natural flavors". I carry that list with me when I shop and it makes label reading much easier. On the top of my head, the companies that will clearly label gluten...
  10. What test would I request if I wanted to know if he was still getting gluten in his diet? Do you know what the IgE test tests for? Is it allergy related? I thought I was clear with my requests but I guess not. He does have many food allergies. I wonder if she tested him for that..... I will have to google IgE. Thanks for your reply. I knew I could...
  11. My son had his one year re-test last week. I had the office mail me the results and I am confused. I also have his original test results so I can compare. His original IgE was 3904 with a ref range <OR=280. His test done last week had his IgE at 1579 with a ref range <OR=304. Both numbers are considered "high" according to this report....
  12. I am another one who was "diagnosed" with IBS when I was 14. I am 34 now. It took my young son being diagnosed with Celiac for my doctor to take my complaints seriously. Twenty years of suffering....
  13. That is great! I have been at this for 14 months and I still learn something new every day! Thanks for posting.
  14. My son hit his one year anniversary back in March and recently had his blood tested for antibodies. I got the phone call today saying his results are "better" then they were a year ago when he was diagnosed. I asked the nurse if she could be more specific but she couldn't. I am having the results mailed to me and I also had then faxed to his GI so I can...
  15. Add me to the false negative club. My doctor, after my bloodtest was negative, referred me to an allergist. She knew much more about Celiac and food intolerance. She diagnosed me with gluten intolerance but she said my bloodtest was most likely a false negative for Celiac. If you don't like the answer one doctor gives you, go to a different doctor. I...
  16. I agree with jerseyangel. I would take this time as a challenge and have her officially tested at the end. I think that is a great idea.
  17. I am furious over something that happened at school and I need to vent/get advice from others who know what I am talking about. My son is on the student council and today was their last meeting of the school year. My son was very proud to have been elected and he went to each and every meeting and took his duties seriously. Unfortunately, today's meeting...
  18. My son is going through some challenges at school right now. It's the end of the year. He is on student council and they are having the last meeting of the year at a local pizza place. My son doesn't want to go because he won't be able to eat anything and he doesn't want to sit there and watch everyone eat pizza (I don't blame him). I am upset seeing...
  19. My allergist diagnosed me with gluten intolerance based on positive response to diet among other things. My Celiac bloodtest was negative but she believes that to be a false negative. The only way to know for sure was to go back on the gluten diet for 6 months and be re-tested. I said no thanks.
  20. Having your children diagnosed young is a wonderful thing! They will grow up eating foods that are much better for them. Perhaps they will even choose a banana for a snack when the other children choose cupcakes. That is a good thing! Going gluten free now and catching Celiac disease before it can harm them makes you a very responsible parent. My 9 year...
  21. Congratulations to you and your daughter! Doesn't it feel great to get through the first year?!
  22. I am in the same boat as all of you. My son was very small for his age (8 years old and 41 pounds at the time of diagnosis). His pedi always chalked it up to genes (I am 5'4 and my husband is 5'9). He was constipated all the time. He would have a BM about once a week. I had to request bloodtesting because my doctor was not going to do it again (he was...
  23. My daughter is 20 months and has never had gluten. I do not want her to go through the same thing my son did before he was diagnosed. It is a no brainer. The world does not revolve around gluten and I don't feel like I am depriving her of anything.
  24. My daughter is 20 months and weighs 24 pounds. She has never had gluten and is extremely healthy. My son, on the other hand, is a different story. When he was 8 he weighed 41 pounds. He started dropping off the growth charts when he was 4 and had completely stopped growing by the time he was 6. He was diagnosed when he was 8 and has since gained 13 pounds...
  25. The strawberry chex are sooooo good. I am addicted to them.
