  1. Have you seen an allergist? After my Celiac bloodtests came back negative (a false negative I believe), my allergist diagnosed me with gluten intolerance. That was my "proof" that I was not insane. I was like you, I needed proof of my illness and my allergist gave it to me. My primary doctor was worthless.
  2. I agree that other problems can arise as a result of gluten intolerance. I suffered from infertility, acne, mystery rashes, and Restless Leg Syndrome until I went gluten free.
  3. I'm not sure if there are higher or lower gluten levels in foods but I know that I react much strogner to wheat. When I was eating gluten and I would eat 100% whole wheat pasta or bread I would get ill within 30 minutes and stay ill for a day. I didn't seem to react so quickly or so badly to foods with rye or barley. That's why I thought I might have a...
  4. I have also successfully used coupons from coupons.com. By the way, if you use Velveeta there is a $1 off coupon. Google "Velveeta" and it will come up.
  5. I checked the label in the big binder they gave me and I did not see flour listed. He ate it last week. I really, really hope it was gluten free. Now I am worried.
  6. I had that concern too and I posted my thoughts in another thread. I thought those items were safe. Has that Dallas ROCK list been updated lately? It doesn't look like it. Anyway..... I look at the school lunch menu for the next month and make a list of all the foods he is interested in and I think might be safe depending on ingredients (e.g. chicken...
  7. My son did not have learning disabilities (The opposite actually, he has a superior IQ) but he did have speech delays. The articulation delays have gone away but he still stutters sometimes. As a first grade teacher, my advice would be to listen to your son's teacher and go ahead with testing. You never know what you will find out. If he qualifies that...
  8. My home is gluten free. My son is the only officially diagnosed Celiac but I have gluten intolerance and we are keeping our 16 month old gluten free. My husband eats gluten outside the home. There is too much to worry about with Celiac. Not having gluten in our home is one less thing to worry about.
  9. My son got a DS for Christmas too. He got Nintendogs and we can't figure out how to play! His dog will not sit and it is my understanding you have to teach the dog to sit before you can get the icons to play in the different areas. Does anyone have any advice?
  10. YES! One of my 8-year-old son's main symptoms were leg cramps, especially at night. He would cry and cry. He slept with a heating pad every night. Now that he is gluten free the leg cramps are gone. I also experienced RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) when I was pregnant and I get leg cramps when I have accidentally ingested gluten.
  11. My daughter, who has never had gluten, has never been sick (knock on wood!). Even when everyone in the family had the flu last year she did not catch it. My son, on the other hand, had an ear infection about once a month starting when has was an infant. He also had speech delays and gross motor delays. I am convinced gluten is to blame for my sons illness...
  12. Congratulations on Violet's diagnosis. I know that is a strange thing to congratulate someone on but I think you are lucky! You have the key to your daughter's health! Many, many people aren't as fortunate. As for things to be aware of.... We are a gluten free home. It just makes things much easier. You won't have to worry about crumbs, contaminated...
  13. Amy's frozen mac and cheese. It's great to have for a quick lunch. My parents keep boxes at their house in case of a babysitting emergency. I keep a box at school in the freezer for an emergency lunch for my son. My kids love it and would eat it all day if I'd let them!
  14. I have chosen to keep my 16 month old daughter gluten free because my 8 year old son has Celiac. I do not want her to go through the same hell as my son. We are a gluten free home and have never felt better. But, I am curious if she carries the Celiac genes. I know a bloodtest wouldn't be accurate so I posted a question on my local support group website...
  15. My toddler is gluten free, along with the rest of the family. She eats the same things we do. She loves pasta (Tinkyada is the best brand) along with fruit and cooked veggies. I make cookies, waffles, and pancakes from Pamela's baking mix. If you shop at a Walmart, look for their Great Value brand. It clearly states Gluten Free on the package if it is...
  16. Go with your mom instinct. That is what always gets me through tough choices when dealing with my children. But, with that being said, I am glad we did my son's scope. We discovered that he had acid reflux (from his food allergies- he had no outward symptoms). We would have never known that if we didn't do the scope.
  17. I have never given gluten to my 16 month-old daughter. Her doctor said she totally understands since she saw what my son went through (she diagnosed him with Celiac). She said if it works then continue. Don't let a doctor bully you. Follow your mom-instinct. If your daughter is healthy and growing then I would not change a thing just because a doctor...
  18. I always bring a bag of popcorn to the movies for my son and we buy sodas. No one has ever said anything to me and if they do I will just explain that in situations where we don't know all of the ingredients we must take our own food. If they argue I plan on having them go get the ingredients for the popcorn and verify if they are gluten free. If they...
  19. There is a skin test for wheat allergy. I had it done last summer. My allergist diagnosed me with gluten intolerance based on positive resposne to diet (among other factors) so maybe visiting an allergist would be helpful. She seemed to know much more about Celiac and gluten intolerance then my primary doctor.
  20. Oh, I always take the goodies. I would never refuse a gift. I tell them thank you, give them a hug, and ohhh and ahhhh about how yummy it looks. But, it's later when I send the thank you notes that I get stuck. This year, getting good advice from all of you, I simply said "Thank you so much for the (fill in the blank). That was nice of you and your family...
  21. I want to get new personalized plates to show my support for Celiac Disease and the gluten free lifestyle. I am not creative in that area. Does anyone have any ideas? In my state, we can have six letters/numbers max. Thanks!
  22. Everyone has different allergic reactions. My son has both Celiac and a wheat allergy. He also has several other food allergies. He does not experience "typical" allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing and swelling when he eats these foods. Rather, he gets acid reflux symptoms. During his endoscopy the doctor also noted he had a rash on his esophagus...
  23. Thanks for the info. I was given incorrect or outdated information. I was told that pharmaceutical grade lactose would cause no problems.
  24. I believe YAZ is gluten free, dairy free, and soy free. It's what I use and I love it.
  25. I agree with AliB. People would much rather pop a pill then change their lifestyle. Give up beer and bagels?! That would be way too hard!! I had RLS, especially bad when I was pregnant. My son had terrible leg cramps at night. He would cry and couldn't sleep. Going gluten free made them go away for both of us. When I eat gluten by accident my legs...
