  1. I had that problem on Christmas Eve since we had it at our house. My mother in law came over early and made the food at our house (her idea). I was not very happy with that plan since the food she made was loaded with gluten. I told her she would have to bring her own pots, pans, and spoons and she acted like I was crazy but she did it. We have a long...
  2. I was dx with IBS when I was a young teenager. I have been ill on and off for the last 19 years with this last year being the worst by far. I had my second C-section in August 2007 and that pushed me over the edge. My allergist (who knew much more about Celiac then my primary doctor) said pregnancy and surgery (C-sections) can be triggers for Celiac so...
  3. Your story sounds like mine. I am so careful with my 8 year old son but not so much with myself. I ate a handful of those Reeses peanut butter bells a few weeks ago without reading the label. I would never allow my son to do that. Anyway, I got ill. I thought I was coming down with the flu but low and behold it turns out that those yummy candies contain...
  4. I developed my seasonal and animal allergies as a teenager. We had cats in the house when I was a young child and had no problems but by the time I was a teenager we had to get rid of them I was so allergic. That's also around the time I started to have my stomach issues. I am pretty sure the two were related. I haven't yet seen my allergies get better...
  5. The book Living Gluten Free for Dummies by Danna Korn is wonderful! It is written in simple language and the author uses a lot of humor which I'm sure you could use right now. Good luck! I was in your shoes 9 months ago and I promise, it does get easier!
  6. I love this! I have to add my son's and my two cents.... Least Fav: Glutino breakfast bars, Enjoy Life breakfast bars, Enjoy Life bagels, Glutino frozen mac & cheese Most Fav: Whole Foods corn bread, Whole Foods cheddar biscuits, Amy's frozen mac & cheese, Andrea's Fine Gluten Free Foods cheese pizza, Kinnikinik donuts (all flavors), Tinkyada...
  7. My positive is my son has his health back. Getting rid of the gluten saved his life. Another positive is I got my health back too. I feel better than I have since I was a preteen. Now that I have the answer to my health problems my skin is glowing, my belly bloat is gone, I lost 10 pounds, no headaches, no naps, no leg cramps, no crabby mommy, no stomach...
  8. Juliebove- That's a shame it didn't work out for your daughter. I had it in my cart for my son but put it back at the last minute since he had said he didn't want it because it was for girls. I still thought he might like to use it. I was hoping it would become popular like the Easy Bake Oven and the fact that is uses gluten free mixes would get some media...
  9. What kind of press has Whole Foods had lately? I'm sorry to change the subject of your post but I am concerned since I just went to Whole Foods today for the first time and purchased almost $100 worth of gluten free food. Is it not safe?
  10. Your situation sounds a lot like mine. I have a picky 8 year old Celiac son and I am NOT a cook. But, I had to learn really quickly to make the basics. I make chicken nuggets using Pamela's baking mix and McCormick chicken seasoning. I make waffles and pancakes using Pamela's baking mix. In my opinion, most of Pamela's mixes are really good. We like...
  11. One of my son's symptoms was terrible leg cramps, especially at night. Everyone told me they were growing pains, even the doctor at first. After he was dx and was gluten free for a few weeks they went away and he hasn't had any since. I also used to have achy leg pains along with restless leg. Going gluten free solved those problems. I can tell when...
  12. Thanks for all your comments. I gave everything to my parents. I did run into a student today and she asked if I had eaten her "puppy chow" yet. I told her no but that it looked really good. They are so excited to give me that stuff, especially when they help make it. It just breaks my heart that I can't eat it.
  13. I am a teacher and received tons of cookies, cake mixes, brownie mixes, and other goodies from my students as Christmas gifts. While I am thankful that they took the time and effort to think of me, I am at a loss as to what I can say when I receive these treats. I thought I had made my diet status known when I made gluten free cookies for our school bake...
  14. Walmart's brand Great Value states gluten free on the package. It is very helpful and I often choose that brand over the name brand just because I am certain it's gluten free.
  15. I went to a dermatologist shortly after my daughter was born last year for a rash I had on my arms and legs. She said it was karatosis pilars and perscribed some gross acid lotion. The lotion did not work but going gluten free did! A month after I went gluten free the rash was gone.
  16. I eat Larabars a lot and have never felt sick afterwards.
  17. Frito Lay states on their website that all flavors of Lays Stax are made on a dedicated gluten free line.
  18. The same thing happend to me. I grabbed a handful of bells out of a bowl at work and got sick that night. I thought I was coming down with the flu. I bought a bag a few days later and when I got home read the ingredients and almost flipped out; wheat flour is clearly listed. Part of me was glad I wasn't coming down with the flu and the other part of...
  19. I don't consider myself an "old timer" but we have been at this for 9 months now and it is getting easier for the most part. The thing that helped me was to educate myself as much as possible about Celiac Disease. I was on the internet for hours each day and checked out all the library books I could find. The book that helped me the most was Gluten Free...
  20. My husband doesn't get it and his ignorance makes me furious. He thinks it's all in my head and has told me several times to "get over it". He thinks my symptoms came on suddenly because I never complained until after our son was dx. But, what he doesn't understand is that I thought the way I was feeling was normal. I did not know what it felt like to...
  21. My allergist was very helpful when my Celiac tests came back negative and my primary doctor brushed me off. She seemed more informed about Celiac and gluten intolerance then my primary doctor. She dx me with gluten intolerance based on a positive response to the diet, family history (my son has Celiac and bowel issues run in my family), and my past history...
  22. Does anyone know if Little Smokies are gluten free?
  23. If you and your kids go through further testing (for Celiac Disease) then you will want to stay on gluten. If you go off of it the tests may not be accurate. When, and if, you decide to do gluten free you have to be 110% commited to getting all gluten out of their/your diet. Having a little wheat/gluten here and there will do you and your children...
  24. Beware of Reese's peanut butter Christmas bells. They contain wheat flour. I ate a handful at work on Friday (no package in sight but I assumed they were okay) and found out yesterday (after I looked at a package at the store) they contain gluten. I thought I was coming down with the flu but it turns out it was the gluten that made me feel bad. Lesson...
  25. Walmart's Great Value brand packaged lunch meats will state if it's gluten free on the package. It's not as good as freshly sliced deli meat but at least you won't have to worry about its gluten status.
