  1. The reason you get such contradictory information is that different celiacs have sensitivities to different levels of gluten. Some won't notice a problem with something, while that same thing might make others very sick. So the answer is: it depends. It makes this so hard to figure out as several celiacs will adamantly claim that something is ...
  2. Wheat flour can be used in the production of plywood. Open Original Shared Link Second page, second line of writing.
  3. I have to agree. I have seen too many examples of things which were called gluten free which were found not gluten free with testing. See the dietician Tricia Thompsons gluten testing results, for example. Open Original Shared Link Just because a company claims that their foods are gluten free doesn't mean that they necessarily are. This is especially...
  4. Hi, I hope you will be getting a diagnosis soon so that you can get better. I had chemical sensitivity pre diagnosis and after getting off gluten it went away. Now I have had occasions where others around me are complaining about someone's perfume and I haven't even noticed it!! This is after having to leave the theater, restaurants, meetings, taxis...
  5. Good idea for a thread, Shauna. I had problems with Kumquat skin. They came from a farmer whose other citrus I can eat without issues so I think it is Kumquat skin. Apparently they often cause problems. It was different from my standard gluten reaction since I had the GI issues without the blurred vision, irritability, joint pain etc. I have also...
  6. As an extremely sensitive celiac, I have had problems with McCormicks single ground spices. I did better buying them whole, washing, and grinding myself. Later I moved to home grown only.
  7. To answer your original question, yes it can happen that quickly. After years of uncontrollable D, I was better the next morning after cutting out only bread and my morning cereal. It was unbelievable. As time went on I did experience some symptoms again and found that I had to cut out more things. Also as time went on, several more symptoms went...
  8. Is the squash coated with an edible coating to prolong shelf life? I have problems with that, but I am very sensitive.
  9. I would cut them all out and try again after you return to health. Then add things only one at a time. I hope you feel better soon.
  10. Me too. I have one going next year and another three years later.
  11. Can gluten be present in produce after washing and peeling? Pesticides can be, maybe gluten can too. Open Original Shared Link I would think that it doesn't have to mean that the pesticides penetrate the skin. It is possible that it is transferred to the inside of the fruit during peeling.
  12. Thanks for that suggestion. I hadn't heard of that before. I found one and signed up for a meeting.
  13. Me too. Upstate New York. I've got grow lights in the basement and I'm trying garden covers this winter.
  14. My son and I both get acid reflux as a trace glutening symptom. It went away with cleaning up our diets.
  15. This is a common misconception about blood tests. While a positive test does indicate gluten indicate, a negative test does not show that there isn't any gluten intake. You can look it up for yourself. There are many examples of celiacs diagnosed with positive biopsies and negative blood tests. In other words there are celiacs eating a full gluten diet...
  16. I came back here because I was wondering the same thing. What happened? I also want to say that you seem like a great guy to be so caring about your roommate. It seems he is blinded by love.
  17. Where did my post go? I hope I'm not double posting. In my store the sign about coatings is in the produce section. It is a small sign and states that the following produce may be coated with food grade vegetable wax: Batata, Cucumber, Eggplant, Grapefruit, Lemons, Limes, Melons, Name, Oranges, Parsnips, Passion Fruit, Peppers, Pineapples, Rutabagas, Squash...
  18. The FDA has stated that they might contain gluten. Open Original Shared Link I'm sure that it is at levels considered safe for celiacs.
  19. Of course that is a possibility. I have found that going on the premise that it is gluten has enabled me to get well, and stay well. That's really all I want: to be healthy.
  20. I scrub my root veggies with soap too. The root veggies from the area of my garden where I used wheat containing slug bait do not get clean enough with this method for me. I am very sensitive and react anyway. The root veggies from other areas of my garden I tolerate well with this cleaning method. I also tolerate root veggies I get from my farmer which...
  21. I have been wondering about this too. I also love cantaloupe, and have been growing my own. I guess listeria occurs naturally in the soil, so what's to say I don't have it in my soil? Does washing and scrubbing get rid of it? If there is a split in the melon do you need to throw it? I was unable to find much information about it's prevention.
  22. Nice warning. Now if you just do something to prevent the unkind posts.
  23. Your post almost got lost with all the bickering. I found that I reacted to coatings on apples quite early on, while I was still eating more processed foods. I do better getting them from the market from farmers who don't use coatings. What I do is buy double of everything and process half to eat later. I also concentrate on eating in season. I couldn...
  24. I just want to point out that plants don't have to uptake gluten from the soil for gluten in fertilizer to be a problem. The edible parts of the plant can easily come into contact with the soil directly or indirectly through wind or animal transfer.
  25. I had serious behavioral issues with both my celiac children. I didn't find out that it was gluten for years until we finally got diagnoses. It must be very hard with a child so young. It is common to become more sensitive to gluten as time goes on. You may need to take more steps to eliminate cross contamination. Do you have a gluten free household...
