ARCHIVED Birkett Mills
dilettantesteph replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My grinder, which was the cheapest they had at Walmart, did grind the groats. Hope it works for you. -
ARCHIVED Birkett Mills
dilettantesteph replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You could grind the cream of buckwheat into flour yourself. You could use an inexpensive coffee grinder for that. That would at least give you the chance to find out if you react and how you like it before spending a lot of money on a mail order. Some really sensitives like me have problems with that, or it could have been an intolerance, but seemed to... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Get The Gluten Symptoms From Antifungals?
dilettantesteph replied to jackay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is possible that the cc is coming from the antifungals. If depends on how sensitive you are. I am very sensitive and am amazed at where I have experienced cc. -
Udi's Mystery-- Oh No! Help!
dilettantesteph replied to Lisa16's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Actually, being a scientist, I have always been interested in those clinical trials. I also live near a medical center. I always check them out, but I hardly ever find one that I am qualified for. I don't only look at the celiac ones either. They are often quite specific in their requirements Right now my daughter and I are doing one about relationships... -
ARCHIVED Where Next? Still Tired
dilettantesteph replied to GfreeMe's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would suggest cutting out processed foods. -
ARCHIVED Need Advice - Cross Contamination
dilettantesteph replied to LaceyGirl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Another step would be to avoid items made in shared facilities and shared lines. If those steps don't work then you could try a whole foods diet. I think that it can take some time for the numbers to go down. Be happy that she is so much more healthy. -
ARCHIVED Schar Pasta?
dilettantesteph replied to allygirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I reacted to only one bite of a Schar cookie, but I'm very sensitive. Gluten free grains can be cc. See Tricia Thompsons study. Schar tests to below 20 ppm. -
Udi's Mystery-- Oh No! Help!
dilettantesteph replied to Lisa16's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I have felt that way many times. It's not a good feeling. -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Been Through This?
dilettantesteph replied to littlestephie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I feel for you. My 13 year old son lost 20 lbs when he started reacting to something in his diet this spring. When you are that young and growing you should be gaining weight, not losing weight. It took a summer of elimination diets to figure it out. He had to eliminate his cheese, his maple syrup, his olive oil, and peel his fruits and finally he got... -
ARCHIVED Is It Possible To Wash Gluten Off Nuts?
dilettantesteph replied to Wheat Wacker's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Interesting. I've found soap necessary for grains. Nuts have a lot of nooks and crannies. If the level of contamination is high to begin with, washing might not work. Can you get nuts in the shell? They are time consuming to shell, but at least you will be pretty sure that they are safe. I'd watch out for your processed gluten free foods. I am... -
Udi's Mystery-- Oh No! Help!
dilettantesteph replied to Lisa16's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I so agree. How can they say that certain levels are safe when they have excluded those for whom they weren't safe!! -
ARCHIVED Celiac Is So Humiliating Sometimes
dilettantesteph replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just be glad that you didn't have gas too. I remember a ballet class in which there were little sound effects with each "sauter". -
I was diagnosed at age 48 and still had symptoms after many months. At that point I stopped eating foods processed in a facility that also...and things got better. Still I had some symptoms so I stopped eating processed gluten free foods. Then I started buying my own whole grains, sorting and washing them and found that I could eat them that way. I also...

ARCHIVED Celiac Symptoms And Behavior Changes
dilettantesteph replied to cv5638's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is better to get the diagnosis before starting the gluten free diet. Starting the diet before testing can lead to false negative results. Get back to your doctor. Your symptoms sound a lot like mine. -
Udi's Mystery-- Oh No! Help!
dilettantesteph replied to Lisa16's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Since the people who get sick drop out of the study and don't get the biopsies, I'm not sure that they aren't getting damaged. I get uncontrollable D, from trace gluten exposure which seems to indicate intestinal damage. I think that some of us might be able to handle 200 ppm just fine and others might not. Anyway, I don't want to take any chances. My... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Diet Isn't Working Anymore
dilettantesteph replied to Teddy's mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got more sensitive to cc as time went on. I eat a whole foods diet now. I hope that she improves. -
ARCHIVED Think I Just Added Dh To My Symptoms
dilettantesteph replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My son has DH (13 years old). He gets it from things that I eat and don't seem to react to. I listen to his DH though and stop eating those things. I'm very sensitive and he is more so. It seems like when he eliminates the thing with gluten in it his DH starts improving by the next day. By about 3 days it is gone. It seems to show up the next day after... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Coffee?
dilettantesteph replied to waterlily-'s topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I had problems with coffee (instant). I'm very sensitive. I found that if I get organic beans and wash them with soap and rinse well, I don't get sick. I'm not sure if all that is necessary. I didn't try it without. -
ARCHIVED Can Outbreaks Of Dh Be Linked To Accidental Gluten Intake?
dilettantesteph replied to Marz's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Yes, I think so. My experience too. I sort my grains to remove anything that doesn't belong and then triple wash them with soap. Then I can tolerate them. Otherwise I cannot. It is a lot of trouble, but maybe worth a try. -
ARCHIVED Neuropathy?
dilettantesteph replied to Simona19's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My neurological symptoms took longer to heal than the gut symptoms. I had pain and numbness, vision blurriness, irritability, and these come back easily when I get glutened. Irritability comes back most easily and blurred vision too. -
Udi's Mystery-- Oh No! Help!
dilettantesteph replied to Lisa16's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
As you can see gluten free doesn't mean absolutely no gluten. There is no test to measure that. There are tests which measure to lower levels than 20 ppm though. I wish that the FDA would change it's recommendations. I believe that I react to these levels. I can't eat many of the things mentioned in this thread, but I can eat whole versions of the... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Guilty For Being Sick
dilettantesteph replied to Aeva's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Celiac disease can be very hard on a relationship. It has been hard on my husband also. It can be hard on intimacy. Of course you don't want to be intimate when you are having symptoms. That is hard for someone without symptoms to understand. I wouldn't rush to move in together until things are under control and you are sure that this is the guy for... -
ARCHIVED Bloating!
dilettantesteph replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My mom died from lymphomia. My dad had a negative blood test but decided to try a gluten free diet due to some annoying symptoms which went away. Now he experiences glutening when he gets accidental gluten. I'm guessing that I got it from both sides. It would be interesting to get the test done. -
ARCHIVED Behavioral Effects - How Do You Cope?
dilettantesteph replied to crimsonviolet's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sorry to tell you this, but some of that behavior is normal even for a not glutened kid. Annoying, yes, but normal. (For short periods, due to some source of stress.) That is, unless just about every kid I've been in a playgroup with had undiagnosed celiac. LOL Being glutened yourself makes it much harder to deal with. -
ARCHIVED Pain Gets Worse During Menstrual Cycle
dilettantesteph replied to musicmom2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My glutening symptoms are worse when I am having my menstrual cycle. It has been fortuitous since one of my worst symptoms if uncontrollable D, for which it is convenient to have a panty liner installed. I could tell when my menstrual cycle was coming from this worsening of symptoms. After I got gluten free enough, I didn't have symptoms anymore, even...
