ARCHIVED Casein Intolerant Too, But What Does That Mean?
kabowman replied to Nancym's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am lactose and casein intolerant. I cannot have any dairy products, at all. All animal milk protein (casein) is similar (or the same - maybe Tiffany can clarify) and I cannot have goats milk or cheese either. Both make me just as sick. A pill can help with the lactose but there isn't anything to help with casein intolerance. I don't know that this is... -
ARCHIVED Soy Intolerance! Please Read N Help
kabowman replied to romeo77's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had the same problems and eventually went to a plain meat and veggie diet for a week or two (when I felt better) then started to add food back in and paid attention to my body--if something bothered me, I tried to figure out which ingredient was the problem and tested my theory. After that, after I had eliminated quite a bit but was still having some... -
ARCHIVED I Need A Gluten Free, Soy Free, And Dairy Free Cooking Oil!
kabowman replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Almost all vegetable oils have soy. Stay away from anything like that--for shortening, I have switched to lard which sounds awful but doesn't add any flavor and makes my pie crust very flaky. I had tummy problems with the palm shortening. Also, I "heard" and don't know if it is true, that some of the cheaper, non-extra virgin olive oils add vegetable... -
What else is in the mix besides tapioca flour? Corn starch? Soy flour? Potato starch? Could it be something else or do those in other mixes do fine for you. Just a guess since some of those tend to be more problematic for celiac disease people rather than the tapioca...it took me quite a while to figure out the yeast on mine. Also, something we add...

ARCHIVED Is It Possible To Create New Food Intolerances
kabowman replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I continued to find other food intolerances after I went gluten-free - but that is just me. Every now and then I try some of them again, just to see and still bad. -
ARCHIVED Wheat, Its Not For Dinner.
kabowman replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good luck...it takes time. I ran into the same thing with my allergist, GI, and PCP. Glad you figured this out, no, there is nothing you can do. See ya' was what I got all around. We are beginning to experiment again - re-inventing old food into food I can eat, only without all the bad stuff that makes me sick. You can get into a rut and eat the same... -
I don't know about in general but I drink tea almost every day...I just watch to make sure that there is no soy or gluten in some of the mixed teas I buy. I found a neat Lipton Green Tea with Flavors, almost all of them had soy added.

ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Without Any Peanuts/nuts!
kabowman replied to RiceGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
But with corn starch...I am concerned that I will develop a problem with cashews which I use for my peanut butter substitute (cashew butter). Too bad...this would have worked. -
ARCHIVED Questions About Reactions
kabowman replied to CMCM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Find out the gluten first - I went on a strict meat and veggies diet for a week or two, after I had fully eliminated the gluten for over a month and then started to notice the symptoms that came wihen eating other foods, then started to add stuff back in--no sauces or condiments until you identify which ones you can eat. If you really think there are other... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Newly Diagnosed Starving?
kabowman replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I added a lot of potatoes to my diet, which helped, is not healthy, and I have gained weight which I now need to take off but I wasn't nearly as hungry. I also added salt because lack of sweet stuff and the salt seemed to temper that a little. I have been able to back off the salt some - I never used a lot of salt before either...I just seem to crave it now... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Sensitive To Corn Since Going gluten-free?
kabowman replied to traveljunkie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Corn is something I had to give up. Watch out, corn syrup is in EVERYTHING. It is in pasta sauces, gum, condiments, etc. Corn is harder to avoid than gluten. Watch out for the gluten-free mixes, they often use corn too. I had similar reactions to corn that I did with gluten. I can tolerate small amounts very infrequently. Many pills use corn starch and it... -
ARCHIVED How To Make A Gfcf Pizza
kabowman replied to Felidae's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You adjust to pizza without the cheese. I make sure I have a lot of good sauce. I think capers really add a great flavor that I now crave. I top my pizzas (chebe mix) with sauce, black olives, crumbled hamberger, capers, veggies, onions, etc. I like tomatoes and artichoke hearts too. It may take some time but I crave my new pizza. Of course, I went for... -
ARCHIVED How May Of You
kabowman replied to Becky6's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No bloodwork for me (my eldest son's blood test was negative) and EDG showed no damage to three sections tested after 3 months of being gluten-free. I have an aunt that tested positive. -
ARCHIVED Going Crazy!
kabowman replied to Goliadman's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My husband has one day off a week and he spends the whole day (almost) cooking for me so I have plenty of food for the week when we are always busy with three kids, from different marriages, different schedules, activities, etc. I come home and warm up the main dish and then add the sides so dinner is ready at a reasonable time. I bake bread on a weekend... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Get Unnaturally Excited...
kabowman replied to Lauren M's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Every time I go the local health food store and he has expanded his allergic to all foods section (which includes gluten), I just go crazy and then call my husband on my way out to tell him my finds!!!!! It is soooo exciting...other people just don't get it. -
I used tape until I was able to replace all the envelopes I use at home AND at work with the ones that have the peel and stick. I also don't lick stamps - only sticker style will do.

ARCHIVED Lots Of Little Questions
kabowman replied to danikali's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did the safe food only for about 1-2 weeks and felt much better then started to add stuff back in...if it bothered me, then I tried to figure out which ingredient was the culprit. I feel beter now than ever and we are continuing to expand what we eat for meals now that I have stabilized. I have smelly urine occasionally. I thought about the asparagus... -
What is used to make mollasas? Thanks...

ARCHIVED Vodka
kabowman replied to Noelle126's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also react to all grain alchol. I can find Chopin (potato vodka) in my town so that is what I drink with little to no problems. I even use it to make my own vanilla and Kaluha. I cannot have anything from a bar tap...just enough stuff in there for contamination and I get sick every time. -
I have used cheap rice crackers in place of bread crumbs too and when I use them, I reduce the amount of salt I add. I add one chopped onion, one chopped bell pepper, 2 eggs, salt, pepper, and lots of garlic. Next time, I will add a small can of diced tomatoes instead of pasta sauce in the actual meatloaf but still use pasta sauce for the top.

ARCHIVED Fairly New, Need Help!
kabowman replied to Beckster's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know a lot of people are very careful with their beauty products but I don't worry about shampoo - it doesn't drip down into my mouth and I rinse my hands before putting them near my face. Kids you would have to worry about. I am careful about my makeup and my lotion because I do put my hands in my mouth (like for a hangnail, or a snag, etc.) and many... -
ARCHIVED Non-celiac Spouses Please Advise
kabowman replied to hapi2bgf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My husband sounds a lot like Tiffany's. However, he figures the less I eat of the other stuff, the more for him but 99.5% of the dinners in the house, our breakfast, and my lunch is all prepare so I can eat and that is what the family eats. We occasionally have other sides and they keep regular bread etc. His lunch is his own...that is when he splurges, then... -
ARCHIVED Smoke Flavour In Bacon?
kabowman replied to gabby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use a smoked bacon with no side effects (Indiana Kitchen I think). I am also ordering a twice smoked ham from KY for Thanksgiving and hope that is OK. I have not had the best luck with ham. -
ARCHIVED What To Eat For Breakfast?
kabowman replied to melisadki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also have pre-diabetes and try to balance my carbs. If I eat cereal, instead of bacon and eggs, I eat a small bowl and maybe a slice or two of bacon after so I don't have a blood-sugar problem. Sometimes I have nutbutter (cashew) on a small piece of bread for the extra protein. I only do that about once a week and the cereal is a nice treat then. I love... -
ARCHIVED Lyme Disease And Gluten?
kabowman replied to healthwarrior's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have very similar lyme symptoms, some are less severe and also lichen sclorosis which the doc is pretty sure is a symptom (and it joins in on the rest when I start to slide back) and have a clinical dx of lyme disease. My actual tests have been negative. I was on plain penicilian, 500mg 3X daily because of all my food issues but after 5 months everything...
