ARCHIVED If You Could Just Use One Herb For Spaghetti Sauce....
rosetapper23 replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Basil, which I also grow, is my favorite! -
ARCHIVED Anyone Living In Brazil?
rosetapper23 replied to uruguaya1193's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I used to live in Brazil, but I lived on a farm in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo; therefore, I didn't have any opportunity to eat foods that came out of a box, bag, jar, or can. Even though you live in the city, you can still buy fresh produce, meats, nuts, dairy, and gluten-free grains. When a person is first diagnosed with celiac, it's common... -
ARCHIVED Rash!(Someone Please Help!)
rosetapper23 replied to MommyMay's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, the two may be connected. I'm HIGHLY allergic to iodine, and when hospital staff during a recent surgery used iodine to clean the surgical area (even though I had stated NOT to use it due to allergy), I broke out in a horrible head-to-toe rash that lasted a month. -
ARCHIVED What Is The Worst That Can Happen?
rosetapper23 replied to katiekay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There are definitely many bad things that could happen, and once the damage is done, sometimes it can't be reversed...even with a gluten-free diet. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 47, and I still am unable to absorb Vitamin K and poorly absorb Vitamins D and B6 even though I take megadoses of both. Also, if I accidentally ingest gluten, I end up deficient... -
ARCHIVED Feet Problems/neuropathy/amputations
rosetapper23 replied to shericeliac2010's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can attest to having neuropathy in my feet since about the age of 15, and I also don't have diabetes. I was diagnosed with celiac when I was 47, and I'm 54 now. The neuropathy improved a little bit after going gluten free, but it's still there. I recently read that, besides malabsorption of B vitamins, neuropathy may be caused by years of iron anemia... -
ARCHIVED What Are The Easiest Countries To Live Gluten-Free?
rosetapper23 replied to KevinG's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I second the suggestion of Australia--great place to live if you have celiac. I visited Sydney last year, and I was able to order sandwiches on gluten-free bread just about everywhere. I even had tea at the Queen Victoria Building, because they offered a fancy gluten-free version. I didn't get sick the entire time I was there (actually thinking of retiring... -
For medications, you can check www.glutenfreedrugs.com , but I ALWAYS call the laboratory directly that manufactures the pills. Sometimes the pharmacist is willing to make the call, but since I usually pick up prescriptions after work and the labs have closed already, I can get stuck with not knowing if something has gluten in it. Still, I place a call...

Yes, they ARE! And so are Fruity Pebbles! However, the marshmallow versions are not. When I found out that Cocoa Pebbles were gluten free five years ago, I was ecstatic because that had been my favorite cereal before getting diagnosed with celiac.

ARCHIVED Support Group In Central Texas?
rosetapper23 replied to Rome's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Sorry, I don't know of one in Central Texas, but the North Texas Gluten Intolerance Group is awesome! They're very active and are constantly advocating for gluten-free menus and celiac rights. I'm all the way out in California....but they make their presence known nationwide. -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac Disease, Not Improving
rosetapper23 replied to element192's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have two comments to make, and I don't know if they'll help you, but I'm hoping they will. First, when people give up gluten, they often eliminate a lot of simple carbs...and this results in low blood sugar. It's probably not what's making your stomach feel bad, but it could be making you feel tired and sapped of energy. Second, you might check to... -
ARCHIVED Celiact Vitamins!
rosetapper23 replied to chili's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was interested in taking a look at them, but when I read that they were pills and not liquid vitamins, I was disappointed. As a result of celiac, my muscles tend to be rigid--and that includes my esophagus, so swallowing is hard. I also have trouble digesting and absorbing pills, so liquid vitamins work best for me. I think it's a good idea, but for... -
ARCHIVED Whatcha Eating Today Celiacs?
rosetapper23 replied to catsmeow's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I drink a smoothie every morning with 1/2 cup organic blueberries, 1/2 cup organic Concord grape juice, a cup of organic yogurt, a cup of organic milk, and ALL of my supplements thrown into it. I then proceed to drink black coffee for the next couple of hours. Today, I had a tuna melt on Udi sandwich bread (tuna, Smart Balance mayo, mustard, onions, balsamic... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Like Mayo! But I Want To Try To Like It...
rosetapper23 replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just about every mayo sold in the U.S. contains soy, and many of us who have celiac can't tolerate it. Otherwise, it's safe for people with celiac to eat many brands of mayo. -
ARCHIVED I Don't Like Mayo! But I Want To Try To Like It...
rosetapper23 replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I recently discovered Smart Balance, too, and was overjoyed because I missed mayo terribly. Like you, I can't tolerate soy, and a few years ago soy began to appear in many products that I'd formerly loved...like mayo. Anyway, I like to use mayo for dipping artichoke leaves. I also make tuna salad sandwiches and egg salad sandwiches. However, what I love... -
ARCHIVED How Many Of You Have Celiac And Kids Have It Too
rosetapper23 replied to Marie1976's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was diagnosed with celiac when I was 47. My children were 16 and 18 at the time, and I knew immediately that my son and mother had it, too, because they'd exhibited almost identical symptoms to mine throughout their lives. In fact, we all thought we were going to die soon. My son, though, had a lot more digestive complaints starting at age 11 than my... -
ARCHIVED Still Sick
rosetapper23 replied to chrissygirlca's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
From other postings on this forum, you seem to be having the types of problems that people with candida issues have. Perhaps someone who has experience with candida will respond to your question--something really needs to be done quickly in your case. BTW, have you also eliminated soy and iodine? Many of us with celiac are very sensitive to these. Iodized... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Gluten Free In Downtown Seattle
rosetapper23 replied to iamsarar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The Gluten Intolerance Group of North America held their annual conference in Seattle two years ago, and it was a spectacular success because there were so many restaurants on the waterfront that accommodated people with gluten issues. A number of the restaurants had signs posted in their windows saying that they serve gluten-free food. I don't think... -
ARCHIVED New.. From California And New England :)
rosetapper23 replied to Jess-Ay's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You CAN eat most ice creams! Ben and Jerry's and Rainbow will note all ingredients, so you only need to avoid flavors like "Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough." Haagen Daaz is also gluten free as is Dreyers. -
ARCHIVED It Takes So Very Little...argh!
rosetapper23 replied to running-girl's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I just wanted to add one comment. When I first read your posting, what stood out to me was that you were cooking wheat noodles for your children. It's so easy to contaminate your own meal when you're making a meal with gluten right next to it...so I always just made gluten-free food for everyone in the house. My kids are grown now, and my son was diagnosed... -
ARCHIVED I'm Sad
rosetapper23 replied to Mothering3's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There have been many threads in the past that dealt with sadness, grief, and tears at certain moments during the healing process. Even though it's been seven years for me, I sometimes still cry when I'm by myself. However, the diet DOES become easier over time. There's hardly a recipe I can't adjust to make gluten free, so I never bother to use the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Shopping In Us
rosetapper23 replied to divamomma's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Since you'll be in California, you'll probably come across Safeway stores. Their Primo Taglia luncheon meats and cheeses (sold behind the deli counter) are gluten free. Also, the Safeway brand organic yogurts are gluten free. Lay's chips, Kettle chips, and others are also now gluten free as are specially marked boxes of Chex cereals and Cocoa Pebbles or... -
ARCHIVED Talking To Restaurant Staff
rosetapper23 replied to GreatGooglieWooglie's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Two things to add to this conversation: First, I always ask for a gluten-menu because even if they don't have one, I want them to be aware that having a gluten-free menu might be a good idea in the future; second, unless the "clear" dressings are made from scratch at the restaurant (and oftentimes they're NOT), steer clear of any and all dressings and ask... -
Just want to add that the salt isn't the problem, since it's iodine that can cause DH. Do you mean that you're cutting down on salty foods outside the home? Non-iodized salt is safe to use, but you just have to be careful with any salted foods like crackers, chips, nuts, popcorn, etc. Also, dairy (unless it's organic) can be high in iodine, and seafood...

ARCHIVED Question About Symptoms
rosetapper23 replied to DMcCarthy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I can honestly say that I was suffering from all of your symptoms (except the kneecap problem) and many others by the time I was diagnosed with celiac. In your case, please keep in mind that endoscopies sometimes result in false-negatives because the scope may not have been able to reach the affected area, the surgeon did not biopsy the affected areas, or... -
ARCHIVED Help With Severe Hair Issues!
rosetapper23 replied to lovinit4's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've been pretty unhappy with the gluten-free offerings, too. Have you tried the coconut Desert Essence Organics conditioner? They have a shampoo, too, but I prefer the lemon. The coconut condition is the only one that doesn't leave my hair dry.
