  1. Actually, you're right about those labels-simply walk by them and buy natural, whole foods. When you start to go gluten free, it's much better to eat whole foods: fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, nuts, etc. After a few months, you can feel free to buy certified gluten-free crackers, breads, and other processed foods. Don't bother with the labels--just...
  2. Yes, your husband is a poster child for celiac....and I'm not surprised it took the doctors so long to figure it out. That, as you know, is common. Doctors in the U.S. simply were not trained to look for celiac disease and didn't recognize it even when symptoms were present. Your husband's overeating may have been caused by malnutrition--no matter how...
  3. Everyone has offered excellent advice to you, and I agree with them. You should be tested immediately; however, even if the results are negative, you've seen for yourself that you do much better following a gluten-free diet, so I hope you'll continue to eat gluten free. You've only experienced symptoms for a short period of time, and, yes, a severe illness...
  4. I recently attended a celiac conference where the topic of cross-reactivity was discussed at length. There are some members on this forum who do not believe in cross-reactivity, but the speakers provided ample scientific studies and papers on the topic. What this involves is that when you first go on a gluten-free diet, your body is still inflamed and trying...
  5. Regarding the bloating, you must still be eating something that is causing digestive discomfort--possibly a vegetable. When I first went on a whole-foods diet and ate lots of salads and fruits, I became terribly bloated and uncomfortable. I found out that it was simply carrots, and I had mixed them in with my salads and had used them for dipping. Small...
  6. It could be that you're suffering from nutritional deficiencies (if you, in fact, have celiac disease). Also, swelling of the eyelids and skin problems can be due to a staph infection. You might ask your doctor to test you for staph, just in cace.
  7. It's very common for the biopsies to come back negative even though there is villi damage (according to celiac expert Dr. Alessio Fasano) because either the scope wasn't long enough to reach the damage sections, the surgeon did not biopsy the damaged sections, or the pathologist was either incompetent or unskilled in reading the results. If you B12 anemia...

    ARCHIVED Rheumatologist

Just would like to add that, now that you know you have celiac, your dry eyes and arthritis might just resolve on a gluten-free diet. I'm just saying....
  9. Is there any chance that you may have had a stomach flu? It's going around right now.....so just a thought.
  10. When I read posts like yours from someone who has just adopted a gluten-free diet, I'm reminded of how oftentimes it is assumed that hidden gluten was the culprit when, in fact, your gut is still in the healing stage and may be reacting to other foods because it is mis-identifying those foods as containing gluten. I have seen countless posts where newbies...
  11. I agree! You may have a deficiency in Vitamins B12 or D, magnesium, or iron...or you may have a thyroid condition. However, I also agree that you may not be eating enough healthy fats, which are essential for energy and proper functioning of your brain. You should be eating organic butter, nuts and nut butters, avocados, and olives on a regular basis....
  12. If the doctor dismisses it, get copies of both bloodwork tests that proved she has celiac....and take them to another doctor for the diagnosis. Also, not all of us ended up suffering from withdrawal. I know that some people on this forum have experienced it, but I was 47 when I was diagnosed....and all I felt was MUCH BETTER after removing gluten and no...
  13. A number of people on this Forum have written to say similar nice things about Chipotle....and, in the future, please DO ask them to change gloves. It reinforces their training, and it's necessary to protect you.
  14. I think you've found the right community! Yes, it sounds as though you may very well have solved your medical mystery--many of us have similar stories to tell. Very few (if any) of us are fans of doctors as a result of many, many years of misdiagnoses and indifference on their part. Before you go much further with the diet, though, you should probably...
  15. Regarding the reading of labels, that may not be necessary for a while. Generally, we advise people with newly diagnosed celiac to eat only whole, natural foods. I realize, however, that your little girl will probably want some sweets, crackers, and bread. Just be sure that everything is labeled as certified gluten free--then you won't need to read the...
  16. At the celiac conferences, they always discuss how children with celiac can suffer from anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. I've also known many celiac children with dark circles under their eyes and pale skin--she should definitely get tested. Regardless of the outcome, though, you might consider making your home a gluten-free one to see if you both...
  17. Good grief! That gastro is a complete idiot!!! With two positive full celiac panels, I don't even see why an endoscopy would be necessary. Also, the damage CANNOT be viewed without a microscope! He sounds so inept, be prepared to hear that the biopsy was negative because he probably didn't take biopsies from the right area or even enough biopsies. Like...
  18. I can imagine that chicken's breading was spitting all over the place--I think it's quite possible that some of the gluten got spat onto your vegetables.
  19. Okay, let's look at this picture. Vitamins don't work for you. Your anxiety has skyrocketed. What might this mean? For starters, it could mean that you're not absorbing your nutrients properly because you may have celiac. You might also not be absorbing your hormones. When you can't absorb nutrients and hormones properly, you can begin to have major...
  20. Good grief! Your doctor is killing you! Is there any way you can changes doctors (like PDQ?)? A level of 7 is unacceptable! You should try to get as close as possible to 2. Also, sometimes the synthetic stuff simply doesn't work--if your body is unable to make T3 from T4, you'll never get better....and so what you'd need is Armour Thyroid, which provides...
  21. Good luck! With these products, you should start seeing little "fluffies" around your hairline in about three weeks.
  22. Hmmm...I read this to mean that, during your lifetime, if you continue to eat gluten and if, say, a person would normally have a 1% chance of developing gastrointestinal cancer, then you would have a 40%-100% chance of developing it. However, since you've stopped eating gluten, your chances should now return to those of the general population. I would assume...
  23. Many of us experience mood swings, anger, depression, migraines, and other neurological problems after eating gluten (hopefully, it was accidental!). Some of us even feel dizzy, but it clear up after a day or two. What you're experiencing is normal, so I hope you can keep from getting glutened in the future.
  24. This was one of my major symptoms....and I still get pain under my left ribcage whenever I'm accidentally glutened.
