ARCHIVED Lamenting
Roda replied to October3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Eventually you will reach that point and just do it. There will still be that nagging thought of "did I do the right thing." I am so glad I did with my 10 year old. We are getting to a point that all of his peers are growing and changing and he is so little. My boys are almost 4 years apart in age and my youngest son (he has really grown so much since... -
ARCHIVED 2 Yo Recently Diagnosed - Looking For Some Feedback
Roda replied to semily's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 6 year old son is essentially diagnosed without a scope/biopsy. He had a positive IgA tTG. His gluten challenge didn't go well and we called it quits after three days. There was no way we could continue for three months for a biopsy. Hope your little guy feels better soon! -
I'm happy for you that you are feeling well. It truely is wonderful to wake up one morning and say "wow I feel good."

ARCHIVED Lamenting
Roda replied to October3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would gander to say that he has celiac disease. I am of the opinion that there is no good reason for a child or anyone, in the absence of other autoimmune disorders that could falsly elevate the tTG, to produce those antibodies unless they have celiac. Not all people that have celiac have gi symptoms. Unexplained anemia is a big red flag and so are the... -
ARCHIVED Son Testing For Celiac - Q For Me?
Roda replied to lizdehart's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The doctor didn't run the whole celiac panel on you or your son. Blood tests include: total IgA (validates the IgA testing, if deficient then tests are invalid), IgA/IgG tTG(tissue transglutaminase), IgA/IgG AGA(anti gliadin antibody), IgA/IgG DPG(deamidated gliadin antibody...newer tests, supposed to be more specific for celiac than the older IgA/IgG AGA... -
ARCHIVED If Not Celiac, What Else?
Roda replied to Serissa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could be a sero negative celiac and had a false negative biopsy. The other side of the coin is that you don't have celiac but are gluten intolerent. Either way it sounds like you need to be gluten free. My youngest son has celiac with positive blood work, symptoms that resolved gluten free and return of the sympoms upon reintroduction of gluten. We... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Panel For My 2 Year Old Daughter
Roda replied to MamaGigi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
A bone age x-ray is an x-ray of the hand and wrist. The radiologist can get an estimate "bone age" from the development of the wrist and hand bones. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Weight Loss Buddy?
Roda replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I NEED to loose at least 20-30 lbs. myself. For me it's a motivation issue and right now specifically, a fatigue factor(I need to supplement with iron again). I love to get out and walk and ride my bike. For me eating South Beach, without the gluten of course, works really well. I find the less grains/carbs I consume the better I do at loosing weight... -
ARCHIVED Heart Palpitations?
Roda replied to kathleenp's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had two bad episodes of tachycardia that started on me on my journey to getting diagnosed with celiac 2 1/2 years after the first episode. I had to go to the ER both times because it was so high. I was given meds first and if they didn't work then they were going to have to cardiovert me. Luckily the meds worked! I did the EKG, holter monitor, meds... -
ARCHIVED Wondering If I Have This
Roda replied to CassandraF's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your symptoms could be caused by gluten. Hopefully your blood tests included the whole panel. Blood tests include: IgA/IgG tTG, IgA/IgG DPG, IgA/IgG gliadin antibodies and a total IgA. You also could choose to have an EGD done with duodenal biopsies(minimum 8) to look for celiac. They also look for other things too. Some people are comfortable going... -
ARCHIVED Acid Reflux Is This A Symptom
Roda replied to Richie1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would at least recommend getting tested done before you try gluten free. Blood test include: IgA/IgG tTG, IgA/IgG DPG, IgA/IgG gliadin antibodies and a total IgA. You also could choose to have an EGD done with duodenal biopsies(minimum 8) to look for celiac. They also look for other things too. Some people are comfortable going gluten free based on... -
ARCHIVED Pie Crust Help Please!
Roda replied to AVR1962's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I made my last one with brown rice flour blend and some buckwheat flour mixed in. I measure about two heaping tablespoons of buckwheat flour into a cup measure and fill the rest of the way with brown rice flour. I use the following mix ratio except I use the brown rice flour instead of the white rice flour: I had the same problem with my last pie crust... -
ARCHIVED How To Notify Family
Roda replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I informed my immediate family. My mom and dad got blood tested a couple of years back and were negative. I don't think they had all of the tests done though. If in fact my dad's tests were negative, I think they were false negative. I truely believe he has it to, but I won't get into details about why. My brother refuses to get tested. I KNOW he has... -
ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Is Too Much?
Roda replied to violentlyserene's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I still have a shared kitchen, but in the last year it is even more gluten free since my youngest son was diagnosed last year and this year the oldest son is doing a gluen free trial. When I initially was diagnosed I went through my kitchen and separated out all of the gluten items in the pantry. Things I couldn't eat and the rest of the family could... -
ARCHIVED Confused Two Kids Positive Parents Negative
Roda replied to dcns65's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep it sounds as if Dad has it too along with the kids. Good that you are changing doctors! BTW constipation can be a sign of celiac. I never had D but suffered constipation off and on my whole life. My oldest son has battled constipation since birth also. He is not celiac, but is gluten intolerent. Youngest son is celiac and never had bowel issues... -
Definately stay well hydrated. I contracted a gi virus when I was 31 weeks pregnant with my first son. I was throwing up and had bad diarrhea. I could not keep anything down. I became dehydrated very quickly. I went to the doctor and they admitted me for fluids. Upon getting to the hospital, I was told I was having contractions also. I thought the...

ARCHIVED 3 Year Old Daughter
Roda replied to jmrogers31's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was a lot older almost 6 when he was diagnosed. He was born a normal weight and height, 8 lb 8 oz and 21" long, but went down on the growth curve and was maybe 18 lb. at 12 months. He did have a lot of problems as an infant with recurrent rhinosinusitis, reflux, colic, rashes, yeast overgrowth. I had to eliminate all dairy, oats, rice and tree nuts... -
ARCHIVED Positive Biopsy, But Negative Genetics?!
Roda replied to mmm1017's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would consider yourself diagnosed. There are many that have negative blood work and positive biopsy. This is one of the main reasons that I won't have the genetic tests done. I am firmly diagnosed from blood work and biopsy and I don't need some jerk coming back and telling me I don't have celiac because I'm negative on the genes. There is no point... -
ARCHIVED What Is A Healthy Oil To Add To Cake Recipes?
Roda replied to Michelle1234's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Canola or coconut oil. -
Do you have pets? Some people react to the gluten in pet food. I chose to put my cat and dog on a grain free petfood just to be safe. Knowing what I know now about the benefits of a grain free petfood, I would choose to feed it regardless of me having celiac. My dog and cat are doing so much better on it.

ARCHIVED How Exactly To Word The Celiac Tests On Lab Slip?
Roda replied to MotoMommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You also need to have on your lab slip an order for a total IgA. This will validate the other IgA tests. If you are found to be IgA deficient then the IgA test results will be useless. If that happens then ask for the IgG versions of the tests mushroom mentioned. Or have him include them on the origial lab slip and get all of them done at one time. -
ARCHIVED Never Even Thought This Was Possble!
Roda replied to morningstar38's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Unfortunately biopsies for celiac are not routine on an EGD, unless they are doing it specifically for it. Some day I wish that the minimum of 8 samples would be part of a standard EGD. Your story is all to common. At least your doctor was smart enough to consider celiac. A lot of the time if the patient didn't mention the possibility, some of us might... -

ARCHIVED Could This Be A Gluten Reaction?
Roda replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It could be a gluten reaction. There are a lot on here that get neuro issues. For me I don't get those kinds of reactions, but I am moody as heck for a good week or more after a gluten exposure. My husband relates it to Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. I definatly think you are on the right track in discovering that you have a gluten issue. -
Depending on the amount of damage seen on your biopsy, you may indeed not feel better yet. It took years for your villi to become damaged and will take awhile for them to heal. Some people on here reported that they actually felt worse for awhile before feeling better. It still is very soon. I would give it some more time and reevaluate. Have you noticed...
