ARCHIVED Effects Of Celiac On The Brain
sandsurfgirl replied to masterjen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got brain fog AFTER going gluten free but it went away after a couple of weeks. My worst neuro symptom was anxiety attacks for no reason. They went away after 2 days gluten free and I had been plagued by them for several months. -
ARCHIVED Unsure If Its True....
sandsurfgirl replied to lbv6684's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow your GI doc knows what he's going and that's pretty rare sad to say. I think it's important for you to change your mindset about this. You said you are going to live on the "theory" that this is what it is. You have celiac and it's not a theory. Blunted villi are damaged villi due to the autoimmune response happening in your body. The blood tests... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Unemployed Or Divorced Because Of Celiac?
sandsurfgirl replied to mrmachinist's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Why would someone keep bringing up stuff that happened when you were so sick?? I don't get it. I'm so sorry for those of you who have spouses who don't understand. It's hard on our spouses. My healing period has been rough because my husband has had to work all day long and then come home and help with the kids and house when I'm sick, but he knows it... -
I've had chronic sinus infections for a few years now. When I got diagnosed with celiac, I figured that they must be connected to it. I was tested for allergies and they came back very mild. My immune response was tested in case my immune system was weak and causing the infections and that came back nice and strong. So all this time the allergist was stumped...

ARCHIVED Please Tell Me It Will Get Better
sandsurfgirl replied to cheesycow5's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with people who say to expand your diet. Why aren't you eating any vegetables? If you are not getting enough carbs and going into ketosis that's compounding your problems. Eat brown rice. Try some plain potatoes eventually (yes some people do have nightshade troubles but not everyone.) Try sweet potatoes. Eat zucchini, green beans, lettuce, carrots... -
ARCHIVED Sticky Social Situation
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is hard to explain and it's embarrassing to explain. We rotate tables bringing food and the next time it comes up for our table I'm going to have to be honest with them and tell them not to bring it. It's hard enough for me to figure out if something is safe, besides my other intolerances. I know what some of you are saying about stuff revolving around... -
Keep Betty Crocker gluten free mixes on hand for cravings. They are so good!

At one month gluten free I was really pretty sick. You are still in the healing and withdrawal phase as well as learning, so you may be getting hidden gluten like others have said. I would look into taking an FMLA leave and short term disability if your doc will support you. You only need a few weeks or a couple of months most likely. Find out your rights...

ARCHIVED Sticky Social Situation
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks so much for all your replies. After thinking about it tonight I decided not to go tomorrow. We are assigned to a table group for the semester and we all sit around a circular table and eat together and have discussion after the speaker. It's an intimate setting and people don't mingle really. I was realizing there is no way I can avoid eating their... -
ARCHIVED Just Ending My 3 Week Wheat Run
sandsurfgirl replied to Brien's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry to tell you but those are celiac symptoms. They may also be something else, but celiac causes that stuf too. There are people with celiac who dont' get GI symptoms, however the diet is a pain the butt and if it were me in your shoes I would want to know for sure since you don't have the GI stuff to go along with it. -
there won't be a definitive answer on this. Some people get sick from them and some don't. Just like Rice Dream. It's processed with barley but supposedly it doesn't gluten the final product. Yet people have posted about getting sick from it. There are other brands I can buy so I steer clear at this point. Ooooh, opening another can of worms!

Hey whatever gets you through.

Ha ha! The McDonald's fries controversy. It got me too! I won't eat them. Too scary and NOT worth it. If they say wheat, I say wheat. I don't care what the tests say. They would have to be the best fries in the world for me to try it, but that honor goes to In N Out whose fries are most certainly 100% gluten free.

yes it really does

ARCHIVED Sticky Social Situation
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's a good idea. It starts at 9 a.m., and yes my stomache is a bit funny in the mornings so it wouldn't be a lie. I'm feeling a sinus infection or cold coming on, so maybe I will end up being too sick to go. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Does Not Mean Gluten Free? Did You Know...
sandsurfgirl replied to meatslayer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yet another complication to the mystery that is celiac. 20ppm is really really really tiny, but... you never know. Celiac can present with so many symptoms, so you eat that stuff with 20ppm and you get a sinus infection. Is it due to celiac or just a sinus infection? I was told by a doc who is pretty knowledgable that it's very hard to truly be gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Sticky Social Situation
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I love the game idea! The soy reaction is BAD as I learned yesterday when I challenged soy. I had some soymilk when I first went glute free and had such bad stomache pains like a knife in my gut I couldn't sleep. I thought I had gotten glutened. Well yesterday I had soy again for the first time in 2 months. It was gluten free waffles with soy flour... -
I'm wondering if you are on the young side and celiac hasn't damaged you enough to motivate you. I was misdiagnosed until recently at age 40. I have suffered so MUCH over the years I have no desire to cheat. So maybe you need to scare yourself a little bit and realize the dangerous effects gluten is having on your body. If you are celiac you do NOT have...

Lots of chain restaurants have allergen info on their sites too. I'm working on a binder to keep in my car. If it's not on the site call the corporate office because sometimes they have the info there and you can take notes from what they say.

Be careful about what you are reading because old sources will tell you to avoid things that you don't have to avoid like vinegar. Only malt vinegar is a problem and generally they don't cook with that. They serve it to put on fish. I haven't had a ketchup problem. Does ketchup generally have gluten? Print up the safe and forbidden lists here on this...

I'm in MOPS, a group for moms of young kids, at my church. We meet twice a month and each table takes turns bringing food for brunch. My table offered to make gluten free when we bring food next time and I said thanks, but don't worry about it. We weren't due to bring food for another month so I figured I would deal with it when the time gets closer...

ARCHIVED Anyone Go Through Jury Duty?
sandsurfgirl replied to jage's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
David has a very important point. Celiac is a serious medical condition. Don't feel guilty about asking for an exemption. If you get sick easily from things, how are you going to stop a court proceeding to head to the bathroom? I would try for a doc's note first. I was having a hard time attending church because the only bathroom was upstairs and across... -
Bummer!!!! It's so confusing in the beginning. You would think wheat free would be safe, but nope, not necessarily. Sorry you were glutened! At least now you have your answer! If you didn't have celiac or gluten intolerance that barley wouldn't have bothered you.

ARCHIVED Am I Asking Too Much Of My Boyfriend?
sandsurfgirl replied to Eli2003's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
He needs to support you. Now that doesn't mean it isn't irritating or difficult at times. It's hard for us and it's hard for our significant others too at times. But he should be supportive and be there for you for sure. About testing, you will get false negatives if you are already gluten free. If it were me, there's no way I would go back on gluten... -
