I think St Lukes in KC, MO. But not sure. She had the hip replacement and was a mess - crazy blood sugars, fluid retention, heart irregularities. She barely walks because, even tho she got the hip replaced she doesn't exercise it and her knee is a mess. I'll let you know what they say on Thur. -

My mom suddenly has decided to get things, that she should have fixed 15-20 years ago, fixed. About a year ago, she found a doc to replace 1 hip against her GP, heart and old orthopod docs advice. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to write them down & bring them up at the appointment. To quote Matt & J " Parents can be sooooo frustrating... -
ARCHIVED Catering to the minorities - Ha'aretz
kareng replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
The spelt could be a problem if they are saying its gluten-free. "infected" might just be a translation issue. I think they meant what we call cc. Infected to us means germs but it could be used in place of CC. Especially because Cross Contamination is a restaraunt & Health Dept term for things like chicken juice left on the cutting board & then... -

Was it an open chest procedure? They say my mom can't have an open heart type thing. They are talking about some type of one thru the blood vessels? Just getting this from my mom so far, so don't really know what its about. -

I don't know why you put yourself thru that! Do you know anything about aortic valve replacements? My 83 yr old mom thinks she is getting one. I'm going to the doctor with her on Thur. -

I'm glad for you that it all went well. I'm a bit disappointed.... Was hoping for stories of drunken Father of the bride's girlfriend doing a strip tease or a groomsman falling on the cake. -
ARCHIVED Living Off On Canned Foods, Is It Safe?
kareng replied to George Knighton's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If all your eating is canned beans with a plastic fork -no. Read the ingredients, most canned veggies and fruits and beans are gluten-free. BUT read the ingredients. Don't know anything about toxic cans. -
I wouldn't want someone to cook something "gluten-free" for me. It might have gluten-free ingredients but don't understand cc. My mom wanted to make me potato salad. All the ingredients are gluten-free but she uses the same colander, pan, cutting board, mayo jar, etc that she uses with gluten.

I think giving men weights is not in favor in prisons any longer. A few years ago, I toured the new state prison before inmates moved in. It was considered state- of- the- art They don't allow them any exercise except walking. They can't even play basketball due to liability issues. It's hard to take care of an inmate with a cast on his wrist. They...

ARCHIVED Technical Questions....
kareng replied to Greg Rappaport's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Click the category your question belongs in. Let's say you want to see if anyone has a doctor they like in Miami. You choose the " doctors" section by clicking the Doctors title. At the top right of all the already posted questions, there is a blue box for start a new topic. Click it. This is how it looks on my computer, might look slightly different... -
ARCHIVED No More Gluten Or Dairy And Now I Am Always So Hungry
kareng replied to noglutenforme's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Why are you arguing with us? We all know that we can't eat gluten. No one disagreeing with that. That is why we are here. We all know gluten causes multiple problems for us. Your article is from the Celiac Center in Chicago. If you want to go gluten free because it makes you feel better, great! But there is no need to try to start a fight or be... -
I made a crumb pie crust with gluten-free ginger snap cookies. It was the best crust for pumpkin pie! You could use margarine I think there is a soy free one - Earth Balance? I've seen that subject mentioned here.

Why did you come on a Celiac website to be rude and dismissive to people giving you honest & caring advice about Celiac Disease? -
You bring what ever you want to bring. If it was at someone's house, you could use the microwave. Just bring food from home. Whatever you would have had if you were home.

I would bet that most of the "kosher, halal, vegetarian" wouldn't pass any test for actually meeting a religious standard. There may be a few systems that do a nice job. Just because you are diagnosed with a medical illness before or during a prison term, does not mean you will get treatment for it. If you are convicted of something nasty - your chances...

From what I have heard about prisons, from people who have worked in them, you likely would be given what everyone else eats. It would depend on the actual prison and even what you are in for. The food served in most prisons is not a nutritionally balance diet. Its cheap & easy. Even with medical documentation of illnesses that require treatment,...

ARCHIVED Restaurants Near Disneyland gluten-free?
kareng replied to areyoufreakingceliac?'s topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
There is a PF Changs. I ate there twice. Brought some sandwich stuff & ate at Disney. Boole the PF Changs and mapquest it. It is walking distance of where we stayed but it also had a big garage. If you are staying in a Disney hotel, you should be able to eat there. -

ARCHIVED How To Notify Family
kareng replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I guess you could send a group mailing/ emailing. Then you know exactly what they were told. What they " hear" is another matter. Maybe some links like to the FAQ sheets at the Univ of Chicago. They have one explaining what tests a relative needs. Or just the link with the important paragraph quoted. I printed it out for my parents. Of course, it doesn... -
ARCHIVED How To Notify Family
kareng replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Is there oe person in the family you can tell & they will broadcast it? All I had to do was tell my mom & now, everyone I have ever met knows I have Celiac. You could be vague about how you were diagnosed. Just say you have it & thus is how they should be diagnosed. You can tell them your health issues that went away. -

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Daughter In College
kareng replied to atzmmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have kids this age. Your right, it sounds a bit off. That's why I told her to really think about what is going on. The mom only knows what the kid is telling her. Makes no sense that they didn't figure out the food thing before starting school. Its hard because colleges can't talk to the parents about some things because the kids are "adults". My kid... -
ARCHIVED Walkers Crisps
kareng replied to stephHKR's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Read the ingredients before you eat somethiing. And I agree with Peter. 2 days isn't long enough to know what made you feel bad. -
The 2 before me said what I would say. I'm the one that uses vinegar. Its cheap. My counters are made of Silestone so the manufacturer says not to use acidic cleaners. I just used Dawn dish detergent & water. When I baked with gluten, I used it to get the flour out of all the little cracks on my mixer. Like Raven said - don't forget the drawers...
