ARCHIVED Need Some Advice About Having Children Tested
kareng replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There is a Celiac blood panel. These are to detect antibodies to gluten. There is a separate gene test. Just because you have the gene, doesn't mean you have active Celiac. -

If there is nothing obvious in the Maalox, maybe it was what you ate? You took it because the spicy food was bothering you. Could be somthing other than gluten

Forgot to say... If you go & order food, come back on here and add a comment about how it went. We would all like to know for our own selfish reasons ( I might want to eat there in another city )

ARCHIVED New Dx 2 Teens
kareng replied to maximoo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This gets so confusing sometimes....whosit tested positive, what sit is negative... I think the kids are positive. If she & hub test negative, the genetic test might be an option for them. Just wiegh the risks of having a positive genetic test out there. Probably the fact that I have had my boys tested for the antibodies is enough to exclude them... -
I haven't been. Use the Google search in the upper right hand corner. I know this place has been discussed.

ARCHIVED New Dx 2 Teens
kareng replied to maximoo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't think you need genetic testing if you are positive for Celiac. Its $200+ that most insurance won't pay for. I don't need genetic testing to prove I have pale skin & freckles. Usually genetic testing is done for relatives that have a negaive blood test. This helps them to know if they need to keep testing every few years. Open Original... -
I did go into a place just to ask about gluten-free food. The manager was very nice. She told me if I have Celiac not to eat there. She said that they did not have an "allergy menu". She said that the fries should only be fried in thier special fryer but, because they don't make gluten-free or other allergy claims, no one enforces it & their main...

ARCHIVED New Dx 2 Teens
kareng replied to maximoo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just want to make sure that you realize that biopsying for Chrohns is not the same as for Celiac. celiac is an endoscopy ( top part of intestines) Chrohns is the colonoscopy. If you put her thru it ( it isn't too bad, just the day of not eating) make sure you are getting it all done at once. Something to consider- without an official diagnosis of... -
ARCHIVED Need Some Advice About Having Children Tested
kareng replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My boys are 18 & 15. I had thier blood test done even tho they didn't have any symptoms. This is standard medical procedure with Celiacs (first degree relatives whcih would include your siblings and parents). The pediatrician wants to blood test the 15 year old every year. The 18 year old probably won't until he has symptoms. I did not do the genetic... -
No you can't eat it and remain gluten free. That macaroni has melted a little bit of flour all in that food. Even if you pick out the big piece you can see, there will be little bits you can't see.

ARCHIVED Help! Two Son Whom Do Not Care
kareng replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You can't help a drug addict until he wants help. You don't need to support him or his habits. That's hard but he isn't your problem right now. The older one that lives with you should be able to help with food and it's preparation. I don't know much about Autism. Weren't there foods he liked before that are gluten-free? Even if it's ice cream,... -

ARCHIVED Help! Two Son Whom Do Not Care
kareng replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think there is a lot you can do about a grown man who supports him self. The 15 year old is another story. Who does he live with? If he lives with you, don't buy anything but gluten-free stuff for the house. Don't give him money to go out. take away everything but his homework and his mattress if you have to. The fact is that lots of food... -
ARCHIVED Meijer Brand Ricotta Cheese
kareng replied to Coolclimates's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That last test has really freaked you out, hasn't it? Take a breath! The only cheese of any kind I have ever seen in the last year and half (. And I love cheese so I look) was this beer cheese my hub got in the Ozarks. There is no reason to have gluten in ricotta or any other cheese except Crazy Ozarks Beer Cheese. -
ARCHIVED Gabapentin Has "cornstarch Gluten" In It. Should I Be Alarmed?
kareng replied to Coolclimates's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What i have seen is that all grain has proteins called "gluten". For our purposes, we call the protein in wheat, rye & barley " gluten". And when we say gluten-free we mean no wheat, rye or barley gluten. The gluten in rice or corn or other grain is OK. This is not to get into the debate that we should eat no grains, ever. -
ARCHIVED New Guy Here, Any Beginners Advice
kareng replied to dacoontz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
At my WF, the gluten-free thing consisted of someone showing me where the main gluten-free things are. They had recently had tastings o they told me which cookies were their favorites. I have 2 teen boys & a hub. I am the only one gluten-free. They keep their bread, crackers, etc in one cabinet & use that counter space. Most food we make... -
ARCHIVED New Guy Here, Any Beginners Advice

Read around on this site. Maybe the sites for the celiac centers at u of Chicago, Maryland & Columbia. I liked Gluten free for dummies book. Start your first week with the obvious stuff. Keep reading here to find out things like not using a toaster that is used for gluten bread. -
ARCHIVED Frustrated ! Any Help Welcomed
kareng replied to monika's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This sounds a bit odd to me. What kind of test of your gastrointestinal tract told them all this? You might want to get a copy of your medical records. Maybe post it here if you want. We all love to give opinions. Maybe some others have had the test and could help you. -
