  1. Honestly, I don't run. When I feel like crap and I don't want to run, I take that as a sign my body needs more rest. When I feel good or, if I want to run to not feel bad, I run. But my default position is to want to run. I love my training and when I can't swim, bike, or run, I am sad. I would say for the moment, since you are coming out of a relapse...
  2. I feel your pain. I am pretty sensitive to some random things and will get all bloated and gassy and I just hate it, hate it. I am dairy free too, but there are some other things that do it to me anyway. For a few days, make your diet really really simple, with just a few things (and things with very short ingredient lists) so it's easy to keep track....
  3. My vote is to go. The big picture is to get good stuff for you and to help your friend. Who cares if you do have to decline? Since you know the woman hosting it, you can ask her to put you in touch with the sales rep and talk to her about what is being prepared. I went to a pampered chef party earlier this year, fully expecting not to be able to eat anything...
  4. I am sure many will echo this, but you have come to the right place. I've been diagnosed since 2002 and have spent a lot of that time on a very limited budget. It is possible to get better. Since you can make a post at all, you have internet access. On this site is a list of allowed and not allowed foods. It was one of the first things I found. You...
  5. oh honey I am so sorry. I hope you can take solace in the fact that it's only bloating and will do down in a few days as opposed to actual fat. You are a beautiful woman, inside & out, and I think it's fantastic that you are still going out and about even when you have been glutened instead of staying home and being a hermit feeling sorry for yourself...
  6. The good news is that there are now good gluten free substitutes for both bread and pasta for your carbs. Udi's bread is great and tinkiyada is a good pasta. But ultimately you don't need to worry about the carbs so much for training - you just want to eat well balanced and without a lot of processed stuff anyway. This is both for gluten free and for training...
  7. Hi Christopher, Not much time for me to write now, but a few quick things. You have come to the right place. It will be overwhelming, and facing the emotions now is much better than pretending you are fine with it all. AND just so you know... Kinnickinick makes a chocolate sandwich cookie that to me is really quite like an oreo. Go find some...
  8. Can she have soy? soymilk usually has a comparable amount of calcium. Also - many orange juices have calcium. Some soy cheeses also have calcium - (galaxy foods) but be sure to check because many soy cheeses don't.
  9. I agree with the above post. Also, depending on where you are located there are gluten free bakeries that specialize in cakes popping up all over the place. For the "bread" how about breadsticks? Not the ones that are supposed to be all soft, but the ones that are supposed to be crunchy? Schar makes a pretty good version of those. Just my thoughts off...
  10. kinnickinick makes oreo like cookies. nobody can tell the difference. I know cause I made oero balls with them! I think it's possible that you could have contaminated yourself. I won't touch anything gluten related with a 10 foot pole.
  11. Stella Lucy in San Clemente, CA. Also a gluten free, dairy free bakery, "the sensitive baker" in culver city, CA. woohoo!
  12. yup - I have a vitamin D deficiency too. I've really been struggling with it because all the supplements seem to give me gas.
  13. I can second so many things that you mentioned in your email. I was sick of doctors telling me I was fine when I knew I wasn't. I also know what it is like to not want to eat because empty is the only way my tummy is calm. Caffeine can be hard on your digestive system in general, so that may help explain that cappuccino incident. You are clearly ingesting...
  14. I am 5'4". My mom is 5'4" and my dad is 5'6". So maybe I am not stunted in growth, or I come from a long line of growth stunted people...
  15. ...But there ARE good gluten free pizzas out there, as well as gluten free cupcakes!! I have no idea if the gluten free beer is any good - but it's out there! So, while I understand the overwhelming finality of it all - there is definitely good stuff out there for us. So while it may be tough at work, take heart that you can have the stuff. I use my co...
  16. Another thing you can do is ship yourself food to a hostel you will be staying at midway through the trip. It's not super cheap but if you do it now you may be able to save a little $$. Ship yourself more snack bars, etc. There are gluten free dehydrated meals out there too. Just add water, wait, and dinner is served. I used them on my last trip out of...
  17. The CDF website IS pretty lame. But they do send you a newsletter on a regular basis which I find useful, mainly for the ads. It's realy chock full of gluten free food ads. Some are the same old standards, but they are good about getting new product ads in too. As for the articles in the newsletter, I have found that it's hit or miss in terms of usefulness...
  18. Hi - I am 33 too and into the long distance stuff. When you say you don't drink anything but water, do you mean on your runs or in general? Regardless, even if it's only on your runs, water just isn't going to cut it to replace your electrolyte loss, especially if you are going long. I'm wondering if the increased weight gain is due to that - you've got...
  19. A while back someone posted about their *best* experiences or something to that effect. I tried to dig it up to add, but couldn't find it so I am just starting anew. Yesterday (4th of July) I had, hands down, the best, happiest, safest experiences I have had at a social gathering since my diagnosis 8 years ago. Granted I had the odds in my favor - the...
  20. purefit bars! You only need a 1/6 of a bar to get 3g protein, and it's a lot less fat than PB. I think it is supposed to be easy to digest. I used them in training and during my ironman last year. I understand that scared to eat phase... Before a ride I usually have a gluten free bagel from the sensitive baker, but if you are not in So Cal, Udi's makes...
  21. To try to boil it down I would suggest the following. If you are in the US, there is a food labeling law that requires the listing of wheat on the ingredients. However, don't forget we also can't have rye, barley, and oats that are not specifically certified gluten free. Also - wheat free does not equal gluten free. Hope these two things help to get...
  22. I think this a very interesting philisophical question and I am glad you posted. can't wait to see what others say too. I too, have thought about this issue. As I have matured, I think I have begun to become more in tune with both my body and my mind. It's not a perfect harmony, and I am not always in tune, but the one thing that I now have a very firm...
  23. *HUGS* *HUGS* *HUGS* I am so sorry that you are having such a rough patch. When it rains, it pours, right? You will definitely start feeling better, both emotionally AND physically. Good grief!! He was sneaking milk when you can't have milk!?!? That is IN-EX-CUSABLE!!!!! Good for you for coming down hard and sticking to your guns. I get you on the...
  24. Bri, I do agree with the gist of what many have said so far, in that YOU have to make the conscious decision to go gluten free. What it takes to get you to that point... well, you and fate will have that sorted one way or another. I would like to add, that the honesty you have with yourself is fantastic. I think that part of what you are feeling is...
