ARCHIVED Hornsby's Hard Apple Cider
Skylark replied to GRUMP 1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That's good to know, Raven. I'll stick to my Strongbow and Magner's then. No questionable ingredients. -
ARCHIVED I Cannot Believe What I Just Ate
Skylark replied to adab8ca's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hehee. Yum! And people think a gluten-free diet is healthy. -
ARCHIVED Hornsby's Hard Apple Cider
Skylark replied to GRUMP 1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Last time I looked, Hornsby's, Woodchuck, Magner's, Strongbow, Wyder's and Blackthorn were all gluten-free. I'm pretty sure I've seen other safe brands; those are the ones that spring to mind. There is a rumor that some brewers add malt to hard cider, but I have yet to see a cider with malt in it so it must be pretty unusual. -
You do have my support, and I am very concerned as well. It sounds like you are in a really bad place. What you are describing is serious anxiety that is leading you into anorexia. It sounds like you need to take what counseling you can get, and also possibly talk to a doctor as well. There may be prescription medicines for the anxiety that you...

Taking him to someone who will doublecheck celiac antibodies and vitamin levels couldn't hurt. As frieze said, the big thing is to be sure he's gluten-free so you haven't missed out on any special medical care.

It will get easier. I've been gluten-free for six years now and wheat bread isn't even remotely interesting. If I want fresh bread with that great yeasty smell, I bake my own from Bob's mixes. I do like Udi's bread and Glutino bagels.

ARCHIVED Friends Inviting You To Eat Out...
Skylark replied to possiblyglutensensitive's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm glad you're feeling better! You are doing exactly what I would do, offering a few safe restaurants. As others have said, if this is a true friend she will be happy to eat somewhere else. -
Wow! I'm glad you figured out your trouble. I hope the dietitian is helpful and good luck with the new diet. You probably can't eat a whole one, but have a bite of a really fresh, flaky croissant for me, will ya?

ARCHIVED Need Help! Acceptable Drinks To Order At The Bar?
Skylark replied to Jess-Ay's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Some celiacs react to distilled grain alcohols. It's not common because the gluten is below detectable levels but it happens. That's more likely your problem than the cranberry juice. The other possibility is you got a touch of stomach virus or food poisoning. (I'd put that as more likely than a strong reaction to distilled alcohol, really.) Whiskey... -
ARCHIVED Higher Ttg Results
Skylark replied to over50's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Are you eating gluten-free oats? Some celiacs are sensitive to them. -
ARCHIVED Study finds celiac patients can eat hydrolyzed wheat flour - EurekAlert (press release)
Skylark replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Fair enough. I'm not sure how I feel on about attempts to make wheat safe. Overall it seems better to try and cure cancer and leave us to our diet but that's not on the multiple choice test. -
ARCHIVED Mom's On Atkins
Skylark replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The induction of metabolic ketosis on Atkins induction can make people feel sick. It has nothing to do with celiac at all. The little bit of carbs she eats prevents the ketosis and keeps her feeling more normal. When I tried Atkins, I skipped the induction because I think it's unhealthy and started on Stage 2, with limited carbs mostly from fruit. That... -
That's wonderful news! I'm so glad you had a better experience with the new doctor. Feel free to make as many posts as you like to ask about the diet if you need help.

ARCHIVED Enterolab
Skylark replied to Linma2428's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You're welcome. Just so you know, it takes an endoscopy to check for celiac, not a colonoscopy. If you're "gluten light" there might not be much damage to diagnose. You might be pleasantly surprised if you try the diet strictly. -
ARCHIVED Damaged Hair
Skylark replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Great advice, but it takes a couple years for long hear to grow, so you're stick with the damage and frizz even if you start growing nice hair. There was a noticeable change in my hair from being hypothyroid that is still growing out. -
ARCHIVED Importance Of Testing?
Skylark replied to CassieGF's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I opted not to test. I was in school and there was no way I could wreck myself for a couple months. I eat as if I'm celiac, which works really well for me. -
ARCHIVED The Politics Of Determining Dh For My 95 Year Old Mother
Skylark replied to YoloGx's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Sorry to be unclear. I don't think enough gluten to just trigger the DH would be a huge deal, since she ate a little gluten for so long. I would be afraid a longer challenge with a lot of gluten could leave her very confused and flare-up the Sjogren's. The confusion is worrisome because she may be more prone to falling. If she only eats a little it... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Pancreatic Insufficiency
Skylark replied to pathwaytohealing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What websites did you read? I've been curious about celiac and pancreatitis, because I had a friend with odd pancreas trouble. If you could share the links I'd really appreciate it! -
ARCHIVED Great Website And Iphone App!
Skylark replied to Shashi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In the US carmel food coloring is made from corn. If it is wheat derived it must say so on the label. It sounds like this app has some issues with their database. It is always better to use programs like that as suggestions and check the label every single time on processed foods. -
ARCHIVED Questions For Those That Have Done An Elimination Diet
Skylark replied to cahill's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That's great that you're feeling better! Now, take your time adding things back. Give a couple days between new foods to notice delayed reactions. Good luck sorting out what's causing trouble! -
ARCHIVED Damaged Hair
Skylark replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm using Straight Sexy Hair. It's an expensive, thick conditioner and the one bottle has lasted months. As far as I can tell from the label, there are no gluten or casein ingredients in it. -
ARCHIVED The Politics Of Determining Dh For My 95 Year Old Mother
Skylark replied to YoloGx's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Yes, I would absolutely pursue the DH route. A specialist in DH is a good idea, so he will know how to do a proper biopsy. DH is a definite diagnosis of celiac and then you have some legal footing. I think your instincts are right about a tougher gluten challenge in someone her age. -
You need a different doctor, or to get really tough with this one. Any doctor who is so closed minded that he can't LISTEN when a patient says they feel dramatically better after a lifestyle change does not deserve your time and money. He is recommending meds because the ex-beauty pageant winner who is now a pharmaceutical rep visited the office last week...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Used The Myceliacid Kit
Skylark replied to jsmjboertlein's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is only a genetic test, not a celiac test. All it does is gives an idea of risk. Have you considered asking your Dr. to celiac screen your family or do folks not tend to have antibodies? Anti-TTG is a really common screening test and while it can be false negative, a positive indicates celiac. A positive genetic test only indicates risk. Prometheus... -
ARCHIVED Possible Celiac Or Gluten Intolerance?
Skylark replied to justjen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hope your new GI listens! I sure understand feeling like "poo". Sometimes doctors seem so stubborn. If all else fails you could try getting a Biocard home test kit. Open Original Shared Link They are Canadian but there is a number to call for US inquiries. It is a TTG IgA blood test you can do at home.
