Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. Hi and welcome. Yes, it could be celiac/gluten intolerance. Going on the diet to see if it helps is free. It's hard to get positive celiac blood tests anyway. The thing you need to know is that if you go off gluten, you have to eat gluten and get sick all over again if you ever want to be tested. Tdads said 2 weeks on gluten, but really it's a minimum...
  2. Mushroom has given you great advice. Don't feel like you need a "doctor's note" to eat gluten-free. If the challenge is making you sick it's not worth it, as you may provoke other autoimmune health problems doing it. Tell your doctor exactly how sick you got, and that you're not willing to gluten challenge any further and can he please check your nutritional...
  3. It's been all over the news. So was cold fusion.
  4. I had bipolar from gluten too. My story is in my profile. Yes, the "flat patches" are villous atrophy. If you have villous atrophy and eating gluten makes you sick, YOU ARE CELIAC! If you want some help with the genetic tests, post the exact results here because it looks like your doctor doesn't know how to interpret them. If you feel better on the...
  5. Butter is a no-no, but you can have margarine. Eggs are fine. I had to give up cow dairy for about a year, but I tolerated goat and sheep dairy fine. Maybe try some goat cheese?
  6. Good luck. I really hope you feel better. The diet has been amazing for me.
  7. Well, if your stool is borderline celiac and you feel better not eating gluten, then yes it could be celiac. There is a clinical test for lactose intolerance. Why isn't your doctor doing that and then scheduling an endoscopy? I also wonder why your doctor isn't doing an intestinal biopsy based on your stool sample. Gee... I really wonder about your...
  8. I think maybe I understand why Dr. Fine is not publishing. He has a little data on his website showing that he has sacrificed specificity in order to have high sensitivity on his tests, and he pretty much says as much in the accompanying test. I'm not sure the way he has defined the reference ranges would survive a peer review.
  9. OK. You have one copy of a gene that is strongly associated with celiac, called DQ2.5. As your results say, people with one copy of that gene have a ten-fold higher risk of having celiac than the general population. The test means that at least one of your parents has at least one copy of DQ2.5 and your sister has a chance of having it. Really, everyone...
  10. Food allergy tests will not be helpful if the problem is fructose malabsorption.

    ARCHIVED Ibs-D

Celiac is a very common underlying cause of IBS-D. Mine went away when I went off gluten (along with a ton of other problems).
  12. Total IgA has nothing to do with celiac antibodies. It's a measure of whether your immune system produces an appropriate amount of IgA overall, and therefore whether your body is capable of making celiac antibodies. In the case of IgA deficiency, the celiac antibodies are IgG, and require a different test to detect. The celiac antibodies are a small fraction...
  13. In the US, the FDA requires fish sold for sushi to be deep-frozen to kill problematic parasites. If you are eating fish that has not been previously frozen, it is wise to be sure the sushi chef is properly trained. As far as gluten, as you know there is gluten in the fake crab meat. Ponzo and soy sauce both contain gluten. Roe are often marinated in...
  14. Enterolab measures what they claim, but the interpretation of the tests is a case of "buyer beware". If eliminating fruit helps, you may have a condition called fructose malabsorption where fructose stays in the gut if you eat too much. The symptoms are bloating, gas, cramping, stomach upset, and diarrhea. A doctor can test for hydrogen produced by gut...
  15. I love Thanksgiving! I make turkey with all the trimmings. I make cornbread stuffing with homemade cornbread. Sweet potatoes, gravy (done with potato starch), cranberry salad, broccoli, and mincemeat pie with gluten-free crust. I'm still working on a good crust recipe, but the strong flavor of mincemeat covers up a goof.
  16. Welcome Tiff. Your story sounds SO much like mine. They told me my childhood stomachaches were psychosomatic. I had IBS, depression (which went to bipolar), moodiness, horrible fatigue, and a bunch of other stuff. Sure enough, it was gluten. As I-geek says, you do need to be eating gluten to have a shot at a positive test. The antibodies that...
  17. Jack in the Box here. Their food was greasy and gross to start with, and half the time I went there I got sick. I always hated Jack and his big ugly white head. Now I know I can't eat a single thing on their menu because it all has wheat, even the fries, and the commercials totally gross me out.
  18. I understand why you're scared, but you should be fine. As tarnalberry says, a single, relatively small incident may make you a little sick, but it's unlikely to trigger a miscarriage. It's nothing like your diet before the diagnosis, I'm sure. I've gotten to where I always order oil and vinegar on salads when I eat out unless I can see all the ingredients...
  19. With a gluten-free menu, I just explain that I'm very sensitive and ask what they do to prevent cross-contamination.
  20. Except that they label everything but DQ4 "associated with gluten intolerance". Agreed it is a more thorough test, as they're identifying all the different beta chains.
  21. It's late, but I'll track down an email I just sent a friend who was looking for info on gluten and MS tomorrow for you. I found a dozen references for him, and that was just looking quickly. Do you know about PubMed? Open Original Shared Link If you type "gluten ataxia" in the search you'll pull up all sorts of interesting stuff. When you click...
  22. I'm so glad it went well!
  23. I hope your doctor is working with you to get an endoscopy scheduled really fast. You could order Enterolab and it will probably come back positive. It's extremely sensitive, but not the same as a celiac diagnosis. The E-lab genetic test is the same as your doctor will do, so no sense getting that part. All you would really need to order is the stool...
  24. Sounds like you're really inflamed. Do you think an anti-inflammatory like Motrin would help, or just upset your stomach more? Might help the headaches too.
  25. Connie, luv, I think you're getting really bad hot flashes. You can get soaked with sweat, red in the face, anxious, dizzy, uneasy. If you were out in the heat, this might have triggered a couple. That's why you felt better back in the car with the A/C blasting.
