  1. I worked it out on my own. I got sick of stomach aches and diarrhea and went on an elimination diet to figure out if I had food allergies. I was not expecting to be gluten intolerant so I didn't even talk to a doctor until I'd been off gluten for a few months and couldn't be tested. I had help from a naturopathic psychiatrist getting over the bipolar...
  2. That's great! I hope you get things sorted out.
  3. English and Irish pubs are your best bet for cider on tap. Back when I lived in Baltimore, the Cat's Eye pub and John Steven in Fell's Point always had cider on tap. Looks like the Cat's Eye has Woodpecker. Open Original Shared Link John Steven isn't listing any ciders on the website now, but you could call. Their seafood was always good too though I...
  4. Hi there. That is not a blood test for celiac, but rather a genetic test. It is not diagnostic, but shows that celiac is a possibility. You can be DQ2 or DQ8, have healthy villi, and eat gluten perfectly fine. We don't understand all the genes involved in celiac, and about 30% of the US population has either DQ2 or DQ8 but only an estimated 1.5%...
  5. Gluten intolerance almost certainly involves the immune system in some way. It's just probably not happening in the intestinal mucosa. Have you read any of the recent and rather interesting research on the mechanisms of gluten ataxia, or the immunologic effects of gliadin peptide?
  6. Hi there. That doesn't sound like any fun at all. Gluten can do all sorts of whacky things to people. The only way to find out if your celiac tests are negative is to go on the diet very strictly for a few months. Have you tried it?
  7. Taradorff, eating gluten is very damaging to celiacs. Sandsurfgirl didn't mention the biggest risk, which is a rare form of intestinal cancer. How do we do the diet? Start easy. Veggies, fruits, plain nuts, rice, potatoes, meats you cook yourself, gluten-free breads or baked goods from a health food store. If you want to go eat out, you find a list of...
  8. Yes, absolutely. Read my profile if you want to see how bad it gets. I had bipolar illness from the Prozac the damn doctors used to treat my gluten-induced depression.
  9. For me, having a really clear mind requires a pretty good chelated multivitamin/mineral supplement and a couple double-strength fish oil capsules a day. If I slack on the supplements I start to get insomnia, brain fog, and some mild depression.
  10. You are NOT a nutcase. Yes, you can try gluten and see what happens. A lot of us who self-diagnose eventually do that with mixed results. Remember that you do not have to have a doctor's consent or any sort of positive celiac test to eat gluten-free. My doctor is a young osteopath and he's really good. He actually discouraged me from gluten challenge...
  11. I can't take Metamucil well either. Too harsh!
  12. Wow, that's a nice, quick, clear answer. Welcome to the rice and potatoes club! Casein reactions are common at first. Challenging once everything settles down is what most folks do. It took me about six months to be able to eat cow and goat dairy again. I found some farmer's market sheep Manouri that kept my cheese cravings satisfied.
  13. What a bummer. The good news is that non-celiac intolerances can come and go. I can relate too. I had a snack today of Ener-G crackers, goat cheese, and diet coke. One of them got me. I'm praying it was the Diet Coke but suspecting lactose. Like you, I'll be very upset if I have to go off dairy as cheese is a big favorite of mine.
  14. Hi there. You can have depression from gluten intolerance/celiac. If your doctor has your thyroid stable and has ruled out any other major medical problems, it's perfectly reasonable to try the diet and see if it helps. It took my mental symptoms much longer than my GI trouble to resolve. I'd say you would need to try for 4-6 months to be sure. Other...
  15. Hi, welcome. You're trying to reverse years of damage. It will reverse at least partly, maybe completely, but it will take a lot longer than a couple weeks. Your body has to rebuild your intestines, then work on everything else as nutrition starts coming in. Celiac absolutely effects cognition, and makes some people depressed or anxious. We also tend...
  16. I've been tired too and cruising articles on chronic fatigue as I wait for my thyroid medicine to kick in. One interesting research direction says that gut inflammation increase mucosal permeability and lets bacterial toxins through to your bloodstream, which triggers inflammatory pathways and causes fatigue. This fits with a new gluten-free diet because...
  17. They remove the gluten to below 6 ppm. Open Original Shared Link Is it any good, Josh? Redbridge was not to my taste at all.
  18. There is no answer to your excellent questions. Thing is, the NCGI symptoms are similar to celiac sprue (I'll use that term for villous damage), with delayed, non-allergy symptoms after eating gluten, GI trouble, fatigue, mild nutrient deficiencies suggestive of malabsorption, and often neurological signs like depression or neuropathy, and hypothyroidism...
  19. Enterolab tests are not diagnostic, nor are the genetic markers. They are merely suggestive. The Enterolab fecal tests actually provide somewhat less information than actually trying the diet for a while because there is no information provided on sensitivity and specificity.
  20. It's been a long time since I was in college, but we were allowed refrigerators in our dorm rooms. You would ask the office that administers the residence halls. They can probably also answer your questions about the cafeterias and food services on campus. The school where I work now has a small grocery store in the student center and while it's overpriced...
  21. I don't blame you for scrapping the Amiodarone if you're sure you have the potassium under control for the moment. I thought that stuff was a last-resort sort of medicine?
  22. I was kind of wondering the same thing. I can see avoiding stomach irritants like coffee for a while but "bland"?
  23. I was so thrilled to have pizza I didn't even check. From their FAQ: Do you have a gluten-free menu? Our restaurants can provide information for guests who have food and allergen sensitivities or an intolerance to gluten. Please ask your server for a copy of our Food and Allergen Sensitivities Menu and Gluten Free Selections.
  24. Thanks for the kind words, Torimuse. I didn't realize how much I craved the company of a community of people who understand what it's like to have a lifetime of medical problems and find out that it was all caused by a single food. The support here is tremendous. It sounds to me that you'll be fine without the diagnostic testing. It sure would...
  25. I love their pizza! Here's their locations. Open Original Shared Link
