  1. gluten-free cakes, brownies, cookies, etc. are very simple to make gluten-free and taste totally normal. The only frosting I have seen that contains gluten is cooked flour frosting - delicious but most are naturally gluten-free such as buttercream (which I make a little too often). I have so many wonderful baking recipes so if interested ask. My favourites...
  2. Exactly. In my opinion the best stock is made with bones you roast in the oven first. Fabulous. Have you tried better than bouillon? Good beefy flavour and gluten-free.
  3. My recipe also takes several hours but is so fabulous. It includes onions with cloves stuck in them, maple syrup, bacon, mustard, ketchup, bean broth...lots of yummy things. We usually make it in winter to avoid heating up the house too much.
  4. Yes - that ganache is SO easy and you can spread it thickly on the top. It glistens and is so smooth that it hides any imperfections, too!
  5. It is definitely impossible to replicate gluten action - meaning the texture and chew. I miss kneading dough rather than spreading it (usually) into pans. It is possible, others have said, to come up with flavourful breads/baking but it will never be the same as those made where gluten is key for elasticity and so on. Some of my favourite flours are...
  6. Brandied Apple Cider and Thyme Braised Chicken Grilled Potatoes with Bay Leaves Corn on the Cob with Garlic Chive Lemon Butter Watermelon Granita
  7. So glad you are finally starting to feel better. Herniated discs SUCK! Three of mine are herniated and so have been unable to work for 3 1/2 years, much of that time in bed, causing muscle wasting and so on. I still must lie down at least half the day, have had tons of painful cortisone injections, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage, chiro, laser....
  8. Fran, I am unsure what a spyglass scope is but will continue to pray that it will go smoother this time without ANY anxiety. Is it similar to having a gastroscopy/endoscopy? Will you be medicated enough to sleep through it? Thank you for informing us - I was wondering how you were doing. Keeping you in my thoughts as you go through these rough days...
  9. Sparkling Roasted Vanilla Lemonade The Real Greek Salad Brandy Deviled Eggs It's hot today. Ick.
  10. OK, upon reconsideration, you can move here without shoveling our snow for six months of the year. Maybe we could just make pizza together instead!!
  11. Would this suffice? It is delicious. And easy peasy. http://www.bigoven.com/recipe/14205/white-pizza
  12. Hi, Ginger! Glad you posted today. There are many issues with your situation: 1. False positives are so rare that they are almost non-existent. There is a high false negative rate, though. My bloodwork was "off the charts" as well, so I also had biopsies which were positive. 2. You need to be eating gluten at least three months (and lots...
  13. This is one of the recipes I had in mind. It is truffle-like inside. Just make a ganache for the top and sides (there is ganache in the middle of the cake in the photo so if you felt really decadent you could make two of these cakes and stack them). Open Original Shared Link Ganache is very simple, rich and glossy... Open Original Shared Link I...
  14. That cake looks similar to a truffle cake with ganache. I just happen to have a recipe for a gluten-free version somewhere - will look into it and get back to you. There are even flourless chocolate cakes you can make that are delicious.
  15. Man, I live in a foodie wasteland here - absolutely no restaurants I can eat at. My husband and I drive three hours when we want to eat out. This diner sounds very good. Another one to add to my list!
  16. Awesome!! I'm happy that you had such a great experience. My husband and I are toying with the idea of returning to SF. We love their restaurants and chefs (including Michael Mina). Higher end restaurants seem to be more knowledgable and far better trained. Many things on menus are naturally gluten-free anyway - the best pan sauces, etc. aren't made...
  17. I was told I must eat the equivalent of 4 pieces of bread a day for 3 months prior to my biopsies. Also, request that LOTS of biopsies be taken (i.e. 8-11, not just 3) for a greater chance of accuracy.
  18. That is SO true! Couponing seems to be huge in the U.S. Here I am ecstatic to see the odd $1 coupon. And the U.S. Amazon has SOOOO much more available than the Canadian website. I'm a little jealous. We live three hours from most gluten-free goods so when we get to the city we really stock up like crazy. Udi's bread is $7.49, hamburger buns ...
  19. What a lovely idea! I am so blessed and thankful for: My Lord Jesus Christ who gives me strength and purpose each and every day and who loves me unconditionally. My dear husband who would do anything for me including going gluten-free except for eating out. He is my support and has broad shoulders on which to cry when I need it! He pushes me...
  20. Sigh...I can so relate. My sister can, too. She is a teacher and gluten intolerant. I believe she has celiac but that is a different story. I love book clubs!! Do you always go to a restaurant for your club? Is there a way you can have it later in the evening or something? My husband and I have not attended a few social events (i.e. church potlucks...
  21. Your marrow story is both funny and painful - I understand what you mean! Why give it to a dog when a human is perfectly willing to have it? Although our precious dog who died 1 1/2 years ago was like our daughter - I would have given her marrow, foie gras - whatever she wanted. I spoiled her a wee bit. What did you decide to do for tonight? Leftovers...
  22. Consider it done! All we have to do is sell our house, ask my husband to quit his awesome job and leave the country. I have a feeling that the climate in California would be slightly better than ours in Alberta!
  23. When I was in high school I really wanted to become either an O.R. nurse or medical lab tech. I have always been interested in anatomy, medical terminology, physiology and so on. I really hope you get well soon so you can pursue your dream!!
  24. Good idea. I will definitely try it. I used to have frequent baths but have not for about three years now. Thank goodness for showers! It is also difficult for me to get in and out of a hot tub, darn it. Bending my back, sitting and prolonged standing really are cruel and unusual punishment for me.
