ARCHIVED What Would You Like To See In A Cookbook?
Marilyn R replied to MissBonnie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OMG. I cook homemade chicken vegetable soup in six minutes. It tastes like it cooked all day. I make all of my own stocks (vegetable, beef, chicken) in 10 minutes. And they're good. You can cook a split pea soup in six minutes without soakiing the peas first. Granted, you have to chop up those onions and carrots first, and brown them. I'd give... -
ARCHIVED First Time Since Diagnosis Glutened?
Marilyn R replied to Karla01's topic in Super Sensitive People
I was feeling "off" today and I'm wondering if it was due to Udi's. It's the only palatable gluten-free bread I've found. I have a good recipe for flatbread that I've posted before. It's 1 cup chickpea flour, 1/4 cup rice flour, 1 cup water. Mix until smooth. Add 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp salt, 1 cup shredded zucchini (skin on). You can substitute part... -
ARCHIVED Irritated With My Family!
Marilyn R replied to RachelisFacebook's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it is disrespectful of your family to eat your gluten-free food. My family isn't perfect, but they understand the importance of my food. I've had to get really P.O. and verbal a couple of times for them to get this. That doesn't make me a greedy b word person, it just means I'm going to survive and some people (usually family) need reinforcement... -
ARCHIVED Symptom(S) That Point To Celiac And Not Just Intol?
Marilyn R replied to sreese68's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know how old you are, but if you're over 50 and due for a colonoscopy, you might as well have an endoscopy. It could still end up being negative, especially if there's much time evolving between when you see the gastro and when the procedures are scheduled. Depending on where you live, you may have to insist that you have both procedures the... -
ARCHIVED Freezable Recipes
Marilyn R replied to Elfbaby's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I cook on the weekends and freeze what's leftover. I cook and freeze as a plan for lunches and dinners. (Granted, there's just two of us.) In my freezer (and I just have that little one on top of the 'frig) I have four pints of red lentil soup, 3 pints of Navy bean sooup with pork, a load of chicken vegetable soup, and some old gumbo. I've got... -
If you're working another part time job, it will be fine to ask for a different interview time. It's better to show up and be confident at a neuetral location than to worry about what will happen at lunch. If it ends up that you must have a lunch interview, my go to order is broiled fish or shellfish in olive oil, no seasoning please, over greens, no...

ARCHIVED Naturopath Worth The Money?
Marilyn R replied to superfob's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dear Ravenwood, I'm serious about pursuing the Dear Ravenwood column.. You consistently give solid advice about a number of issues revolving around this disease. I'm sure I'm not the only one to thank you for leading us down the right path... You deserve a place in the celiac disease forum Hall of Fame. Thanks again. (I'm not just saying it, it... -
ARCHIVED Sick Or Starving/any Advice?
Marilyn R replied to DianeSeekingInfo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You may find that you can tolerate legumes every third or fourth day. I really don't see how you can get enough protein without adding meat and fish in your diet with your other food intollerances. You're exhuasted because you need protein. I don't like meat, but I consume it for fuel. Fish and shellfish is more pallatable for me. You must... -

I know you all are sick of me coming back at you like certain door knocker religious maniacs, but I'm a believer in the pressure cooker. Minimal time, minimal ingredients, maximum taste. Pressure cookers are coming back in vogue, maybe that's a way to get into the cookbook market? I actually e-mailed a PC guru with a request to write a pressure... -
ARCHIVED The Positive Side Of Celiac
Marilyn R replied to Whatnext?'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Love your way of thinking. I've discovered delicious new fruits (papaya, mangoe) and vegetables (rutabega, turnips) and just how good a plain sweet potatoe is without all the extra stuff in most recipes. I save a ton of money on take out lunches by packing my lunch everyday. We don't eat out at all anymore, and I don't miss the credit card expense... -
ARCHIVED Severe Travel Anxiety!
Marilyn R replied to lynnelise's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hope this will help you. Seven months after I went gluten-free I had to fly to a small town in the Midwest on a moment's notice due to a family emergency. I packed a ton of Lara Bars and nuts and thankfully my brother stopped at a grocery store for me on the way to his home from the airport. I bought safe tuna, peanut butter, sweet potatoes, canned... -
This evening it dawned on me how ironic it is that for months and months I questioned doctors about what was wrong and could come up with nothing (except osteopenia, hypoparathyroidism and IBS). All of my doctors would tell me "all of your blood tests are perfectly normal". Maybe you should see a psychiatrist. (So I did, without any relief.) Now that...

ARCHIVED What Would You Like To See In A Cookbook?
Marilyn R replied to MissBonnie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I guess I get dismayed at many of the gluten-free Cookbooks because they rely on so many soy and/or dairy products, neither of which I, and apparently many others, can consume. Good for you for your ambitions of publishing a cookbook! I wish you the best. As for categories, "Potluck dinners" would be good. We all need to tote a dish for social events... -
ARCHIVED Naturopath Worth The Money?
Marilyn R replied to superfob's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ravenwood, I always learn so much from your posts. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My sister-in-law told me that her friend with celiac disease really didn't start feeling better until she went to a Naturpath. I've been considering going to one too, and your advice is, like always, dead on. I just had a great idea ... how about contacting... -

Sounds great! We had cuban beef stew over brown basatmi rice cooked with a pinch of saffron. Tried a new recipe. It called for chuck steaks, chopped tomatoes, beef broth, fresh red pepper, onion, carrots, garlic, green olives and capers. It was good, but I think it will be superb tomorrow. (Guess I did a nightshades challenge test too... -
ARCHIVED Unusual Dreams, Heavy Sleep And Day Exhaustion
Marilyn R replied to GReilly's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I got glutened a few days ago too. That night, I slept normally. The night after, I didn't get one wink of sleep. (I tried relaxed breathing, meditation... everything.) The next night, I slept like a bear in hibernation. I'm wondering what tonight will bring. Wishing everyone a good night's rest, (That's me with my blinders on because of the... -
I've been on Solgar Natural Vitamin D3 2200 IU for a couple months now. (Found it at a local health food store.) I haven't had any problems with it and in fact feel much better ... it took a couple of weeks to notice marked improvement. (My short term memory and fatigue improved first, now my fingernails are actually appearing more healthy. My hair loss...

This is going to sound like a fairy tale but I swear it is true. I chose a gastro in my smallish town after I went gluten-free. He spent a complete hour with me on my initial visit, and I was seen within five minutes of my appointment time. It took me a few visits before I would agree to an endoscopy, and he scheduled it himself, and gave me the instructions...

ARCHIVED Did I Make This Up?
Marilyn R replied to cait's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Cait, It takes me four solid days following an accidental glutening to feel good again. I scheduled my endoscopy for a Monday thinking I could go to work on Tuesday, but I ended up calling in sick. I'd been gluten-free for months before I had the procedure, so I think I reacted to the soy in the anesthesia. No, I don't think it was... -
ARCHIVED 3 Subjects: Organic, Shampoo/cleaners, And Facilities
Marilyn R replied to KuKuKaChoo52's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi KuKuKa, If you have problems with any of the previous suggestions, you might want to try potato vodka. And if you develop an intolerance to corn, you'll want to avoid mixers with high fructose corn syrup. (That means most mixers.) A cocktail made with potato vodka, cranberry juice (Ocean spray doesn't have high fructose corn syrup) and a splash... -
ARCHIVED I Might Be An Idiot, But I Am Desperate...
Marilyn R replied to Dee777's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I hope you find relief. I haven't been on prednisone, but my girlfriend has been on and off it many times. She said that you get a big burst of energy! So that may be a good thing temporarily! They'll wean you off from it, it will be really important to follow the time lines and dosages. Sweet potatoes are great! Avacodo's seem to be pretty neutral... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Marijuana. Also Ne1 W/ Bad Smell?
Marilyn R replied to tguy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
:DI don't know if this will help your concern body odor, but when I used to work out in the gym (bravos to you for working out), I stunk when I worked up a sweat. I don't think anybody's sweat smells good. I have a friend I love to bits, but when he comes to give me a hug after riding his bike for 3-4 miles, I want to pinch my nose and step back. We... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Marilyn R replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Dinner tonight was grilled marinated Tilapia with mango salsa & black and small red beans (that's what the bag said) over leftover rice. I didn't have the foresight to pre-soak the beans, but they took less than 1/2 hour to cook in the pressure cooker. Because I forgot to pack the chicken for lunch yesterday, I took it today. OMG! Cold... -
ARCHIVED Does It Get Better?
Marilyn R replied to shadowicewolf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dear Shadow, You will definitely feel so much better! Hang in there, good luck with your exams, and know that your best days then (and now) will be worse than your worst days once you heal and get on a even keel. At least that's what I've discovered! Again, good luck! -
ARCHIVED Question For Anyone That's Done Skin Allergy Testing
Marilyn R replied to salexander421's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So sorry for your DD and you! Anyone diagnosed with DH has celiac disease. Has she been seen by a (good) dermatologist when she had an outbreak? An associate is highly allergic to soy and had to have an epi injection at the allergists when they tested for soy. I'm not a medical professional, but I think your instincts are right on target. My...
