  1. Hey girl! Read this article on the pros and cons of the gluten challenge--very informative, and not long: https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodid=1281 This will tell you what you need to know...
  2. Lynne- Hey! Wild Oats definitely sells both where I live...but they won't be in the store all the time, just after a new issue comes out, so you may want to keep your eyes peeled. Can I just tell a silly story? My dh hasn't like the name Living Without, like many folks, and so when he wrote a check for renewing the subscription he wrote it to Living...
  3. I was also surprised by the smallness when I first got a box, but as Vincent said--sometimes you have to take what we can get! I did just recently try the glutano breakfast bars--they taste like nutragrain bars, pretty good I thought...
  4. PS--do you have the safe and forbidden ingredient lists from this site yet? They are a huge help when starting off looking for gluten-free foods: https://www.celiac.com/st_main.html?p_catid=12

    ARCHIVED Frustrated!

Rose- Are you doing a gluten challenge right now?
  6. Ha ha Karen Big Bowel definitely sounds like a place where they would serve lots of gluten!
  7. Just wanted to share, Big Bowl now has several entrees that can be made gluten-free. I was there this weekend and had the gluten-free pad thai--it was great! And my first pad thai in a restaurant since going gluten-free. If you're interested, their website is here: Open Original Shared Link Read about gluten-free under "letter from chef." Their food...
  8. Sandyo-- Go here to see safe and forbidden ingredient lists--very helpful when shopping: https://www.celiac.com/st_main.html?p_catid=12 It is hard to say on your question--some folks experience immediate improvements, some of us do get worse for a bit, myself included...and for me it has took several months to notice any initial improvement. What lead...
  9. Hey friends! Just thought I would share... I got back the results from my 1 yearish follow-up biopsy etc. The biopsy and blood work (Celiac panel and liver enzymes etc) are normal! So good news there... My question is for any of you who have had a follow-up biopsy. The biopsy itself if normal, there is no scalloping or mosaic pattern upon viewing...
  10. Oops! I was stupid and read LW, instead of GFL...so, no I haven't received a Gluten Free Living magazine yet--Sorry I don't subscribe to that one, just pick up in store.
  11. I second what Vincent said--NO oats b/c uncontaminated is near impossible to find at this point and there is no testing to know if you are one of those celiacs who reacts to them, gluten-free or not. IMO, more research needs to be done on oats before I would eat them or recommend them to anyone.
  12. Let me know how it goes... Like I said, it takes 3 weeks about to get out of the "C" cycle and start going regularly after getting rid of dairy...
  13. If you have Crohn's I highly, highly recommend the SCD diet--it is a diet (gluten free of course) that allows only certain carbohydrates which in turn promotes healthy gut bacteria levels and GI healing. This diet has improved and or healed some folks with Crohns and has helped several here with just non-responsive (or less responsive) Celiac. Go here to...
  14. Yvonne-- Try doing dairy with a lactase supplement/lactaid pill and see if that gets rid of your symptoms or improves them. If it does, then lactose intolerance may be the problem. I would say 2 weeks may not be quite long enough to give you an accurate sense of dairy's effects in your diet though. It takes me 3 good weeks of dairy free to get rid of...
  15. Glad you found out about the lipstick! I had the same thing happen to me with a MAC product. Are you using chapstick brand or another?

Lisa- When you talk to the doctor--make sure you impart just how miserable you have been. Sometimes you have to 'ham it up' in a sense to help them understand just how serious your situation is. Tell them you are struggling in school and having trouble making it through the day...and ask how they would suggest you handle constant severe pain over the next...
  18. Patti-- It so great meet people who really care and take an interest in others--especially in retail!

    ARCHIVED Oahu? Maui?

Oh yeah you can look Getting the jeep is fun and great on Road to Hanna. We rented one...which my dh especially loves since he has one at home... I was going to ask about Pearl Harbor. My dh is a huge wwII buff, history buff also. We spent one night, our last one in Oahu just so he could see it. It meant a lot to him, he is a member of their association...
  20. PS--I do totally understand how most natural food markets are more expensive the typical run of the mill grocery or a place like walmart. And my dh and I have had a hard time with that too--we go out far less b/c of it. I do hope those places don't get a bad name--or the association that they are more expensive because they are more concerned with profits...
  21. What I have seen from my reading is that yes, the more frequently you eat a food on a leaky or compromised gut, the more likely you will be to develop an intolerance to it. However, that doesn't mean that you will. To try and prevent more intolerances eat a variety of foods...I saw a guideline once that said try not to eat the same food more than 4x a...
  22. I think that link is helpful...thanks!

    ARCHIVED Oahu? Maui?

The sunset bike tour--ha ha! That made me laugh Jillian when I read it. I think my dh and I contemplated doing that for about 1 minute... We're not morning people
  25. Susan- I love what you said here--part of what I think you are talking about is consumer responsibility--that some folks want to know where their food came from and the ramifications of the production of the food. Just heard an excellent interview on Walmart and Whole Foods. Unfortunately, in our culture consumer responsibility is a luxury and costs more...
