  1. The original poster felt her sister was chastising her for letting celiac "define her" in ways that seemed to limit her. She was, understandably, reluctant to get sick eating out. Perhaps the real issue is....not whether it it "defines you" --but CONFINES you? Only we can decide that for ourselves. It has liberated me--that probably sounds...
  2. It sounds as if you are still healing then. I could be wrong, but I do not think IgE testing will reveal anything new to you. I do not believe (and my allergist said so, too) that GI problems, nervous system, muscle pains ,etc...are IgE mediated. Your reactions --if they are IgE mediated...would be sneezing, hives, red eyes, breathing problems, etc...
  3. I'll assume you have tried probiotics, had your GI tract scoped every which way, capsule endoscopy? yadda yadda yadda....in other words, maybe it's not the food, it's that the gut is not healed yet? or refractory sprue? Do you mean you have allergies to foods like histamine reactions affecting your breathing, eyes?
  4. Yes, I do order them online. Custom Probiotics in CA. (I am not a saleswoman, I swear!) A book written by a gastro doctor lists them as ones he recommends to his patients. Then, someone on here said she used them. I have used other brands during the last 2 years and did not feel they did a darn thing for me. (perhaps avoiding the gluten AND taking them...
  5. This is strange then. So, some of us lacking in sufficient B-12 and folate levels react to the sun and/or sunscreen ingredients and some of us react to the sun and/or sunscreen with adequate levels....hmmm...it IS a mystery. ) This is the weirdness that is celiac and autoimmune disease. It is especially perplexing to me, since I never, ever reacted...
  6. I was still undiagnosed then. I kept telling the doctors it was celiac, but no one else thought so. I had pain in my stomach that sure seemed like h. pylori and major heartburn that crushed my chest (I wanted to die some days, really-- it was so bad; wake me up and keep me in pain all night kind of stuff), stomach pain, gnawing, and burning from my tongue...
  7. I thought I had an h. pylori infection last summer, but it was not that and it really HURT, so my sympathies. My Dad had that too, years ago ...so I thought for sure I would--I got Dad's stomach (and likely his celiac, although he was never DXED). Are you being treated for that h. pylori as well? yeah, leaky guts are a bugger.... You may...
  8. Glad you feel better. That is a good plan--and frankly, the only way we can determine which foods continue to give us problems. Best luck!
  9. DITTO from me on the soy. I avoid it entirely.
  10. oh, that is a bummer..sorry gee, I looked at your signature...that's a large number of food intolerances to have..have you been able to add ANYTHING at all back in ??
  11. I developed awful burning sensations in my skin, stomach, mouth, esophagus, heck... everywhere . My muscles, my feet....it was the real clue that something other than "IBS" was going on. It is very painful. I felt like I was on fire all the time!! I cried every day. 4 months after being gluten-free, it is slowly subsiding. Fortunately, the stomach...
  12. After the way I plunged into 3 years of major illness and debilitating pain, thinking death would be easier and literally bringing our lives to a dead halt, my husband would beat the daylights out of anyone who even suggested I try such a thing now that I am slowly getting well. I bet he feels bad!!...more importantly, I would think you know your experimenting...
  13. Very well said and you raise an excellent point--is it the FOOD that defines us? For me, my greatest joy was in creating amazing home-cooked meals for family and friends. It's how I "won" my husband he liked my cooking, among other things and we often had dinner parties of multiple courses. Until I got sick and those came to a screeching halt....
  14. Just have to chime back in...TH (Shauna) has provided you with tons of helpful information!! and she made me think, too... I had that same "heavy" legs and arms...dizzy, very brain-fogged, almost "surreal" feeling and feeling "off", actually walking sideways sometimes...like I was drunk. Feeling so exhausted that it seemed impossible to function. That...
  15. My B-12 is high ...but maybe it was the folate and I will tan once again...that would be awesome!
  16. Then, I am guessing you have read that many people of Irish heritage are celiacs, yes? The hardest thing is knowing I can never have a Guinness again. County Kerry is just one of the many beautiful counties we have visited on 4 trips to your gorgeous country!! We think you live in paradise. I'm in NY in the US. Our honeymoon in 1997 started our...
  17. You're so welcome, hon and I hope it resolves the D for you. I knew your electrolytes must have been off, that's why I recommended the water, salt, sugar drink. I commiserate as I went through that awful D and abdominal pain for a very long time. Had the abdominal scans, stool samples, scopes, everything. They could never "see" anything except the tests...
  18. Hope this med works for you, Dee! Fingers crossed!! Let us know. Sue, it was so good of you to post your experience. We never know who we touch when we reach out....
  19. I used to be able to be in the sun for hours. All of my life, I could be out there, all day long with a bit of sunscreen on and get nice and tanned and look awesome. No sunburns for me. ....until 3 summers ago when I was so ill with celiac (didn't know it was celiac at the time) and my skin would get beet red and overheat in the sun and it felt like...
  20. I believe there is a HUGE connection to GYN issues. I had endometriosis, cysts, fibroids, painful periods, and multiple miscarriages and a horrible very early menopause that resulted in a hysterectomy. Had I known at a younger age that I had Celiac, and been able to treat it with a proper diet, I may have been able to avoid all those complications and had...
  21. I feel your frustration. I even had some of your symptoms like painful calves, feel like I am dragging , crying and wishing for death on the worst days, etc. until I found out by requesting blood work was my folate levels were really low. Both B-12 and Folate levels are affected by celiac and will cause this flagging fatigue, feelings of sadness, etc......
  22. Aren't those scary??! I started having nighttime anxiety a few years ago. I was told it was "hormonal"..ha! and...Those scream dreams..man, I would be screaming in the dream and start to wake up, you know that half awake, half asleep twilight feeling...trying to rouse myself and poor hubby telling me "it's okay it's okay.. it's just a dream babe...
  23. Since thyroid problems and eczema often accompany celiac (as well as all the other symptoms you list for both of you) I would not be surprised if you find out you are both gluten intolerant. Make sure you are both consuming gluten when tested--although realize there can be false negatives. Happens often. The only thing to do is...try a strict gluten...
  24. Perfect!! ..wouldn't that be great if gluten had a green color and we could see it glowing in something.
  25. On another post, you and I talked a bit about this, Nate...and I said I approach my recovery from celiac one day at a time. Just one thing, hon...You are not driving anyone away because you are doing what you need to do to save your own life. THEY choose to walk away or be non-supportive. You cannot beat yourself up over Celiac. It is a disease; it was...
