  1. Since going gluten-free, mine have gotten much shorter and lighter (to the point where I actually got a little worried). But I'm on a birth control that is supposed to lighten your periods, so maybe now that I'm accepting more nutrients the birth control is working more effectively???
  2. I was really scared to try oatmeal, but I did just fine with the certified gluten-free oats. Love it!!!
  3. So annoying, and it really belittles the disease. This happened to me once. I was at a restaurant with friends, and I was just drinking water. A girl mentioned she had a gluten intolerance, then proceeded to take a big bite out of a chicken wing. This place was clearly not gluten-free friendly.
  4. I just ate another cupcake I have a feeling this cake may become a problem for me, especially on nights when I come home stressed out, lol. Sometimes a girl just needs her chocolate.
  5. I made this yesterday, and it's pretty incredible. Warning: It is in no way healthy - it's a very rich and decadent dessert. I made it in cupcake form and put most of them in the freezer (I've read that flourless cakes stay good for up to three months in the freezer). I have a feeling I'm going to be very popular at wine/dessert parties Enjoy...
  6. I use Nutribiotic vegan brown rice protein powder. Very low sugar, and is gluten/soy/milk/yeast/egg-free. It also has a decently low amount of calories - 55 calories for 12g protein. It doesn't taste very good, but I use it as an extra supplement rather than a meal replacement, so I don't mind a quick drink of it before I eat my yummy breakfast.
  7. I love Lara Bars, but if you look on the label they don't have very much protein. Too bad, otherwise I'd eat them more.
  8. Thanks so much for the reply! It's nice to know that other people can relate. Unfortunately I gain weight in my stomach, too, but my boyfriend says that my body is perfect the way it is (even without me asking, haha). I think that once I buy new/bigger jeans that aren't so tight around my stomach I'll feel better about where I'm at. Too-small-jeans never...
  9. My back story: I have always been a petite person. I'm 5'4 and in my mid 20's. In high school I was borderline anorexic, and my lowest weight was 107. I got back to 112, which is a much healthier weight for me and stayed there for several years. In the final few months before my diagnosis my weight suddenly dropped. I was down to 106 and was eating a ton...
  10. I just got the latest results from my Celiac panel and thought I'd share my progress (Note: at this lab less than 15 is normal) -March 2011 - my tTg was 300+ and off the charts -3 months gluten free - 53.1 -6 months gluten free- 30.9 -11 months gluten free - 21.4 I was really hoping to get down below 15 this time, but no go. At least it's going...
  11. Another amusing restaurant story: Me on the phone with a representative from a restaurant: Me: Hi. I have a question about your menu. I have a gluten intolerance, and I was wondering if you have any gluten free options on your menu. Him: What?...Hold on...what? Glut? Glut? Me: No gluten. Him: Glut? Umm.... Me: No gluten. Wheat, barley, rye. It...
  12. Thank you for the reply. As careful as we all are, you're right about those small moments of distraction. I just figure that if there is a choice between a hand/facial product that has gluten in it and one that doesn't, I'd rather have the extra comfort of getting one that doesn't contain poison. Btw, I use wet'n'wild nail polish. Their line is gluten...
  13. I know that. But if you put a gluten-containing product like nail polish, nail polish remover, lotion, ect on your hands and then eat something like fruit with your hands, you can ingest small amounts of gluten. There are numerous people on this board who said they have gotten sick this way. Also some people have a skin disorder called DH. They will be...
  14. Anyone have any information on brands that are gluten free?
  15. That's awesome! Thanks for the tip. iherb.com is another great resource for discounts on gluten-free flours.
  16. I hope it was a wheat allergy. I met her son once, and he was probably around 60.
  17. Yeah, but the really sad thing was that she just kinda waved it off and didn't listen.
  18. A co-worker and I were talking about Celiac, and an older woman approached my desk. She asked what we were talking about then said, "Oh, my son had Celiac when he was a baby, but he grew out of it." It just made me kinda sad.
  19. A few more things I've gotten: "What's glucose?" "You don't need to be on a diet! You're so skinny!" "Can you hold a baby who has just eaten gluten?" Also, I was at a restaurant with a bunch of friends (I wasn't eating - it wasn't the type of restaurant that would be able to accommodate) and had mentioned my diet to a new friend....
  20. Haha. My first trip to Trader Joe's being gluten free, I told the cashier as she was scanning my Udi's bread that it's so great that they carry gluten free options. She said "Well, you know it's just a fad diet. So many people are doing it these days. It's ridiculous. No one really needs to be gluten free." I said something like, "Well actually I was just...
  21. Look carefully on the labels of nuts at Trader Joe's. Some of them say that they are produced at a facility that also produces wheat. I know that the organic salted cashews aren't labeled that way, so that's what I get. I've also gotten some raw walnuts from there, too. Most of their products don't say gluten free, specifically, but just read the labels.
  22. It's better not to eat late at night. If you lye down to go to bed shortly after eating (or just eat while lying down), your body doesn't digest food as quickly. So yup, it'll just kinda sit in your stomach. I think that most professionals will recommend not eating for two or three hours before bedtime. Also, late at night, most people will tend to eat "feel...
  23. I have a similar question. When you are glutened, does the immune system become weaker? I had a problem where I think that I got glutened, then caught a stomach virus, cold, and horrible cough all at once. I got a sinus problem shortly after that. I felt like I was going downhill. Anyone know the answer?
  24. When I'm cleaning something, I sometimes put the end of a q-tip in my mouth to get it slightly wet. I had a thought - is it possible for the cotton on q-tips to be contaminated with gluten in processing? I really have no idea but decided I'm gonna just put water on them instead.
  25. Seitan. I can make/find gluten free versions of anything else. But seitan is basically pure gluten
