I'm a long time vegan too and new to this gluten-free thing, and I'm having a hard time with it. I went vegan for health and ethical reasons, and the ethics keep me honest, so to speak. Even if I'm willing to risk the reactions to dairy, the ethics involved mean that I won't say "just one sundae! It won't hurt that much" because (here's the point) I apparently...

ARCHIVED Soy Burgers?
Jenniferxgfx replied to reenag's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Have you looked into Dr. Praeggers? (I know I'm butchering that name.) I think there's one that's all veggies and no wheat or soy but I haven't checked in quite a long time. I've been thinking about making my own black bean burgers but I don't have a recipe. Clearly, I need to get cracking -

There's also hazelnut and hemp milks. Plus rice milk, but I'd suggest making it yourself since some folks have reported reacting to cc in the biggest brand. Have you tried the newish So Delicious coconut milk? I think it's pretty good mixed into anything and coconut's such a good fat, IMO. Also, there's a coconut milk creamer that's tasty and might... -

ARCHIVED Misc Questions About How To Do This
Jenniferxgfx replied to cait's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Beans and lentils are great for protein and iron both. Most Americans get much too much protein, but beans, nuts, seeds, brown rice, quinoa, and plenty of veggies are good sources. Also, another vote for possibly not needing an antidepressant with gluten gone from your life! Veggie representin' -
ARCHIVED Weird Menstrual Cycles?

Are you anemic? My iron gets really low and my periods get all irregular. I didn't make the connection till I had IV iron and they Became what other people called normal/regular, and then when my iron went back down, they became normal for me again. I've been taking iron pills and got my iron back up and theyve been more regular again. My doctors have done... -
Have you had an MRI to get it looked at? I've suffered with back pain for a long time and it took 10yrs before a doctor took me seriously enough to take a picture. I have arthritis in my spine, and spondylolisthesis with some bad discs... I just suffered with it as long as I could, but after developing fibromyalgia, it was all too much to keep working. ...

ARCHIVED Worried About Endoscopy/colonoscopy
Jenniferxgfx replied to BlessedTXMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm in a sort of similar situation. I have a gastro appt June 15 when I'm going to talk about celiac and then either get tested and go gluten-free or skip testing and go gluten-free, but since I know I need to eat gluten for the testing, I'm trying to keep my diet the same, and it makes me so sick to eat wheat. I'm having a really hard time eating things... -

I think the fiber suggestion is a really good one. I alway underestimate the power of fiber. I think this advice is relevant to my own problems too. Thanks. -

It's possible to be vegetarian with food allergies. I agree the safety of meat is a good reason to avoid it, and not everyone has access to or money for the so-called "safer" meats. Do you have access to fresh fruits or veggies? What about some precut fruit and nuts instead of the Lara/kind bars, just to make sure it's not those doing it? Sometimes... -
I'm a chemist and from what I understand, all these plant derived fibers are so processed they resemble plastic more than any of their original starches or proteins. That bamboo derived "green" cloth that's so trendy now is basically just polyester, and I think corn is very similar. It's so far removed from corn, a reaction is really unlikely. I'm not an...

Jenniferxgfx replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am a person with invisible disabilities who cannot work and lives with daily pain. I've also chosen not to have children. But I really find your posts offensive. You're telling people they should be resenting their life choices and constantly miserable! I resent that. I have a wonderful life full of love and happiness and I haven't had a Whopper since childhood... -
I'm in the processed of getting testing/diagnosed, but I've definitely noticed my asthma is worse on nights when I've eaten wheat during the day or for dinner. I've had asthma since I was a baby, and it really impacted my life. It's improved since I went vegan (dairy and eggs were triggers ) but I never made the wheat connection till recently. I'm 33. (boy...

Lactose free milk, if from cows, can still be an allergen. You might want to try something nondairy. Almond is tasty. -

Agave nectar bothers me (gerd). It's chemically just fructose or corn syrup, and I can't tolerate much corn syrup either. Could be that? -
ARCHIVED Job Interview Concern
Jenniferxgfx replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh man, I have this fear!! I really sympathize. I don't think there's anything wrong with just rescheduling to a non-meal time. I'd thank him for the generosity of the lunch offer, too, and if you think schmoozing will help you land the job, offer to go for coffee/tea. Sometimes they take you to lunch to size you up in social situations and make sure... -

ARCHIVED Latex Free Band-Aid?
Jenniferxgfx replied to Simona19's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm allergic to latex and adhesives. There's a Nextcare plastic tape that I carry myself if I'm gonna get blood drawn. Also, some places have Coban if you ask, a nonadhesive sticks-to-itself wrap that works well. Ive seen it at pharmacies and I think its a 3M product. -
