That's another thing you need to watch out for if you feed any of the animals in the clinic. Most pet foods have gluten. Don't breathe in the dust when you're pouring out the dried food. I'm sure you wash your hands anyway after touching the animals or the food, but don't forget to. Cat's especially, because they clean themselves with their gluteny tongues...

ARCHIVED How On Earth Can I Gain Some Weight?
bartfull replied to no7ang's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, you're not absorbing all the nutrients from your food yet. It'll happen in time. In the meantime though, eat lots of protein and lots of ICE CREAM!! Eventually the weight will come back on and as you heal, you may even have to cut back on treats so you don't go too far the other way. -
ARCHIVED Still Getting Really Tired After Lunch And Am Wondering Why
bartfull replied to BelleVie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Soy, if you're not intolerant to it, will give you complete protein. And quinoa, if you can stand the stuff. I don't like it, but then again, I'm a lousy and lazy cook. There are folks here who really like it and know how to prepare it so it tastes OK. -
ARCHIVED Pizza Sauces
bartfull replied to shadowicewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OK, here's a recipe from the world's worst cook, but I got it from a friend so it's good. Melt some butter. If you can't do dairy, use olive oil. Slice some mushrooms and saute them in the butter/olive oil. Crush three or four cloves of garlic into it and let it sit on the stove for a while on the lowest heat possible. Grate some cheese. I like white cheddar... -
ARCHIVED Ruffles Say Gluten Free?
bartfull replied to seraphim's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Seraphim, I think I recall you saying you have a problem with corn? Ruffles are cooked in corn oil. I use to love them, and the regular Lay's. They were my chip of choice because you hardly ever find a burnt one in the bag. But alas, my corn intolerance forced me to give them up. -
ARCHIVED Overwhelmed With Gluten Free
bartfull replied to Macmuireadhaigh's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What Pauliewog said. And if you haven't read the Newbie 101 thread yet, get over there and read it. It will teach you a LOT. -
ARCHIVED Cautious About Cc Labels?
bartfull replied to momIM12's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ah, but it depends on what the food is. Sure, a shared dishwasher may be used in restaurants, but something like, oh let's say pasta, is made on machinery that is SO hard to clean all of the little nooks and crannies. I would never eat a gluten-free pasta that was made on that same equipment. (Disclaimer: I don't even know if there IS such a thing as a gluten... -
ARCHIVED Cautious About Cc Labels?

Some don't seem to have any problems with it but personally, I won't take the chance. -
ARCHIVED Accepting My Ibs Diagnosis, Odd Symptoms That Don't "fit" Anywhere
bartfull replied to 0range's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could have non-celiac gluten intolerance. With that, you won't test positive for celiac but they say the symptoms are often WORSE than for those who Do have celiac. If you try going STRICTLY gluten-free for about three months and notice an improvement, that could be an answer to at least part of your problem. Another thing that comes to mind is a... -
ARCHIVED "are You Still On That Bogus Diet?"
bartfull replied to eers03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OK, that's TWO reasons you should come to the Black Hills. I'll give you a guitar lesson, and I'll take you to Lintz Brothers for a REALLY good gluten-free pizza. If you need a third reason, it's the scenery. Come on out! -
All summer long I have been eating and enjoying organic white potatoes. All summer long it has been unusually humid here. And all summer long my hands and back hurt like crazy when I get up in the morning. I had been blaming it on the humidity, but a couple of days ago the pain and stiffness stayed with me all day instead of fading away as the day went...

I'm so sorry to hear this! Maybe you SHOULD go to the ER. It sounds like you might have appendicitis. If this is so much worse than gluten makes you feel it could well be something else. Please, go get checked out and let us know. ((((HUGS))))

ARCHIVED "are You Still On That Bogus Diet?"
bartfull replied to eers03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
"My disease can't be cured, but there ARE cures for ignorance and rudeness. Why don't you look into them?" That would be my reply to this jerk. -
I just replied to a different thread but somehow it entered itself on this one. Sorry. Carry on...

I did a search and found this thread on cheese: https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/100751-a-cheesy-note-to-newbies-with-secondary-lactose-intolerance/?hl=%2Bbutter+%2Blactose#entry860596 Haven't found the butter one yet, but at least I know I'm only HALF crazy.

I could have SWORN I read here that if a person has lactose intolerance they can safely eat butter and hard cheeses.
-
For close friends and family who know you've been diagnosed with celiac, you can tell them it's too easy to be CC'ed and you had to promise yourself you wouldn't eat anything you didn't prepare yourself. When they get that hurt look, just say,"It's not that I don't trust YOU to cook for me, but a couple of people with good intentions CC'ed me before, so now...

Hard cheeses and butter have casein, but no lactose. The mac and cheese sauce most likely had milk in it. I was still having lingering problems so I gave up things with milk in them - ice cream and yogurt to be specific. I still eat butter with no problem.

ARCHIVED Seeing The Gi Tomorrow
bartfull replied to Soccer-Mom2405's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Show him this from Johns Hopkins, and point out that at the bottom of the list of symptoms there is a bit about how some people are asymptomatic. Ask him to google "silent celiac". Then ask him to google "false negative celiac blood test". Open Original Shared Link Or better yet, find another doctor. Or you could just go gluten-free on your own... -
ARCHIVED Adult Diagnosis: How Long Til You're More Or Less Used To This?
bartfull replied to mmoncrief's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Irish Heart says, "and who here hasn't done the dumpster dive to re-check something?" I have NEVER done the dumpster dive! Instead, I just kept taking those vitamins that I THOUGHT were gluten-free until you pointed it out to me on the forum! I'd probably STILL be glutening myself if it hadn't been for you! (((((HUGS))))) Yeah, sure, the writing... -
ARCHIVED Barley And Rye Labeling/ingredients
bartfull replied to Veghead1234's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
But, as I said before, if you stick to Kraft or Con Agra, (somebody help me out here and tell us the other companies) you won't have to call or email because it will be stated on the label. If they use smoke flavoring it will say, "Smoke flavoring (from barley)" if it has barley in it. If it just says, "Smoke flavoring", it is NOT from barley. -
ARCHIVED Newly Dx - Reading And Learning A Lot
bartfull replied to moosemalibu's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Udi's Double Chocolate Muffins. You can find them in the health food store. They are BETTER than any chocolate cake I have ever tasted. They are the size of a large cupcake and come four to a package. They are frozen but don't take long to thaw out. Honestly, these are SO good! Put a candle in one on your birthday and enjoy! -
Anyone Eaten Domino's Gluten-Free Pizza Recently?
bartfull replied to Veghead1234's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Eating nothing that you didn't make yourself is a bit of a pain, but it's not that bad. When traveling, bring an electric skillet or a George Foreman grill. Most motel rooms have fridges and microwaves so it is easy to shop at a grocery or health food store in whatever town you're in and do your own cooking. And it's easy to eat at a friend's house. Just... -
ARCHIVED Barley And Rye Labeling/ingredients
bartfull replied to Veghead1234's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The FDA has just passed a new rule in which any product claiming to be gluten-free MUST be gluten-free down to 20 PPM. It will cover ANY gluten grains. It won't be fully in effect until next year. That will help when it comes to foods with gluten-free on the label. But lots of foods are gluten-free without labeling that they are. There are some companies...
