ARCHIVED Too Much Salt And Fat Potential Problems?
bartfull replied to rgarton's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it's just that you ate too many. According to this article, they are sometimes prescribed for constipation. Open Original Shared Link -
Yeah, shock collars don't always work either. I've known people who used them on their dogs and eventually the dog figures out it won't kill him so he puts up with the pain. I would tell your boyfriend he has to find a new home for the dog. Sounds harsh, but there is no way I would ever put my cat at risk like that. If he is the right guy for you, he will...

ARCHIVED Am Not Getting Better
bartfull replied to jamesM11's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm sorry you are still sick. Have you read the "newbie 101" thread? It will help you find the places gluten hides so you don't get cross-contaminated. Do you live with gluten eaters? If so, you need a dedicated toaster, your own colander, your own jars of condiments, and to keep your food away from theirs. I know it sounds crazy, but a few weeks ago I got... -
ARCHIVED Where To Begin
bartfull replied to jklivin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Please read this article and you will see that celiac crisis is different from what you describe. What you had was simply a gluten reaction. If you had been in true celiac crisis, which is very rare, they would crtainly never have turned you away from the ambulance, nor the hospital. You would have died. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Where To Begin
bartfull replied to jklivin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you have been gluten-free since Oct. 20th, I would think your withdrawal symptoms would be gone by now. It sounds to me like you have gotten cross-contamination somehow. When you say celiac crisis, do you mean you had to be hospitalized? True celiac crisis is rare, and it is life-threatening. People in celiac crisis usually die from a cross between... -
Most companys are switching over from BPA plastics to the corn-based stuff. BPA's are bad for us anyway, so I just avoid all canned food now.

OH! I forgot all about colored pencils! I used to love to draw cartoonish pictures with colored pencils. I have a bunch of them stuffed away in a drawer somewhere. I'll have to dig them out and start using them again. When I was married, we used to wrap all Christmas presents in plain white paper and then do funny Christmas cartoons on the paper. My niece...

I am STILL suffering from the glutening I got from the cookie crumbs. My gut is OK, my psoriasis has quieted down, but whenever my jaw pain and swelling flares up, it lasts for three or four weeks. I am in SO much pain right now. This morning when I got up I was really grumpy. I'm so TIRED of hurting! But I picked up my banjo and started playing Christmas...

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask if you have any problems with corn. If so, it might be the lining of the cans. They are now lining some cans with the new corn-based plastic. Crazy as it sounds, if you are intolerant to corn, it'll get you.

If you can tolerate plain yogurt you could try mixing a bit of that in the tuna instead of mayo. I promise, it'll taste good.

ARCHIVED Always Bring Your Own Food!
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mushroom, I would STILL bring my own! I would tell these people that I would really enjoy breaking bread with them, having great conversation over a meal, and spending some time with them. Then I would tell them how sorry I was that I couldn't enjoy their cooking which always smells so good, but they THEY are more important to me than food, and in order to... -
ARCHIVED Found Something For Inflammation
bartfull replied to AVR1962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A friend of mine has life-threatening gout. He tried the cherry juice and it helped some, but then he started taking celery seed capsules (from the health food store). His gout which used to flare up on him every few days has not bothered him in MONTHS now. They say it is great for arthritis pain too. -
ARCHIVED Coolest Christmas (Or Other) Gifts Ever
bartfull replied to Adalaide's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Elephants are my favorite animals. When I lived in San Diego I always bought a year's pass to the zoo. I spent my lunch hour there at the children's zoo where all the baby animals were. There was a baby elephant that I got to know very well. When she saw me coming she would run to the gate to greet me. We would walk around while I talked to her and petted... -
ARCHIVED Not Trying Enough New Foods...scared Of Allergies..
bartfull replied to 123glldd's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I don't know if there is a test or not. I imagine you could google it or ask your doctor. But I DO know that I can't take ibuprofen or naproxin. (Advil, Motrin, or Aleve.) I don't get an allergic reaction, but my prosiasis flares like fire, and my jaw gets unbelievably bad. All I can take is Tylenol. -
ARCHIVED Not Trying Enough New Foods...scared Of Allergies..
bartfull replied to 123glldd's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
If sals are a problem for you, you DO know that tomatoes are very high sals, right? And sals build up in your system so you can eat something once, twice, and maybe the third time you will have reached your tipping point and it will make you sick. I eat broccoli a lot too, and I eat sweet potatoes almost every day. It's the only way I can get enough vitamins... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge And Awful Symptoms
bartfull replied to Megan1980's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Interesting that you seemed to have had a seizure. This article says that high folate levels might be a cause of seizures: Open Original Shared Link -
My stepdaughter went to school with a kid whose last name was Case, so of course his mother named him Justin. But the bad part was, every time she'd take him somewhere she would announce in a VERY loud voice, "Just in case you were wondering, Justin Case is here!" The kid is grown up now. I wonder if he even speaks to his mother anymore.

ARCHIVED Starting A Gluten-Free Diet After 4 Years...
bartfull replied to RaeSaldivar's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Celiac is often triggered by a physical or emotional trauma. I'd say your food poisoning episode definitely qualifies! Your symptoms sound like they could well be celiac. Yes, even the anxiety. The good news is you have come to the right place. Start by reading the "Newbie 101" thread. It'll help you find all of the places gluten hides so you can avoid... -
ARCHIVED Fish, Chick Peas, Swiss Chard?!
bartfull replied to april-s's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Chickpeas give me gas. They are beans, and all beans give me gas. Garlic does too. Maybe this is just a normal, non-gluten reaction? -
ARCHIVED Safe Sandwich "bread" Substitute?
bartfull replied to jackibar's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like Canyon Bakehouse San Juan 7 grain better than Rudi's because Rudi's seems to fall apart. Other than that, the taste is very similar. And if you get Udi's, make sure it is the MULT-GRAIN, not the white. It has the taste and texture of french bread. YUM! -
ARCHIVED I've Been Gluten Free For So Long, Yet I Still Get The Worst Stomach Aches
bartfull replied to AlexandarZ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Soy, dairy, and corn seem to give a lot of us problems. I would try ditching all three for a while and see if it helps. Then add back one at a time. Be aware, corn is in almost every single product that has more than one ingredient, and even in some things that have only ONE "ingredient". If something is PROCESSED with corn, they don't have to list it as... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed: I Can't Eat Anything
bartfull replied to Chaff's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Shadow, I didn't do well with organic apples either, but it was because of salicylates. The only apples I am allowed are golden delicious and I don't LIKE golden delicious. I like MacIntosh apples, but they are high sals. But I think I am ready to try high sals foods again, just to see if I can tolerate them now that I have healed (mostly). It won't... -
I agree with srall completely! I too am self-diagnosed, and I always say, "Since I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I can't eat that." Or something to that effect. It is not a lie. I WAS diagnosed - by myself. It really IS easier to deal with other people if you say celiac disease rather than intolerance. Sometimes I just say I have food allergies...

The lack of convenience was perhaps the hardest part for me. I was never one for cooking. I'd just pick something up on my way to work most days. Realizing that there wasn't one single place in town where I could just pick something up was tough, and realizing there really wasn't even anything at the grocery store that I could just pick up was even harder...

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed: I Can't Eat Anything
bartfull replied to Chaff's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gluten withdrawal will cause a lot of these symptoms. I was in withdrawal for the first three weeks. Brain fog and tired all the time. But I also wanted to tell you that I had to go completely organic for a while too. My nutritionist said my system was so messed up it was reacting to the pesticides and artificial fertilizers in produce too. I doubted her...
