ARCHIVED Cereal
Bubba's Mom replied to Adalaide's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Our Kroger's store carries Envirokids gluten-free organic cereals. It was on sale last week and I paid $2.50 a box. They're normally a bit more. I get the Koala crisp, which is like Cocoa Pebbles, but they make a peanut butter and chocolate one, one that tastes like capn Crunch, and one that's a frosted flake one. If you don't have a local store that carries... -
ARCHIVED Pleasantly Surprised By This Place
Bubba's Mom replied to tctwhite's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
How wonderful! Part of the fun of a ball game is to get something yummy to eat. It's so nice to know that we Celiacs are being considered. Have a great time..and report back please? I hope your team wins! -
ARCHIVED Type 1 Diabetes, Now celiac disease
Bubba's Mom replied to Ed in Baja's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had gluten cause all sorts of symptoms..in all parts of my body. The balance issues/memory/cognitive issues are the scariest for me. On a strictly gluten-free diet (no processed foods other than a cereal) I'm healing more and more all the time. Now if I accidently come in contact with wheat flour (inhaling it can get me too) the neuro symptoms are... -
ARCHIVED Pregnant Looking
Bubba's Mom replied to bossley's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You may want to trydigestive enzymes? You can buy them over the counter. They help break your food down so your digestive system doesn't have to struggle. If you're not taking probiotics daily, start taking them. It might be a good idea for you to keep a food log? Note any symptoms, like bloating, excess gas, excitability, drowsiness, whatever. Many... -
ARCHIVED Tax Break For Celiac, Really?
Bubba's Mom replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thought I would add..if you are buying produce, meat, dairy as snacks, etc. instead of gluten filled options like petzels, cookies, cereals, etc. you can't claim it. You can only claim the difference in price between regular items and the gluten-free version..just as Adelaide said. Bummer...I wish I could write off my produce bill. LOL I put... -
ARCHIVED Newbie With A Long List Of Symptoms
Bubba's Mom replied to Kitty Marmalade's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I say push for testing! You have many of the symptoms, and quite a few can be the result of malabsorption causing vitamin/mineral deficiencies. Don't go gluten-free or gluten lite until you have been tested, if you decide to pursue it. As others have said, about 20-30% of us test negative in our blood work, so if you get a negative try the gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Stool Testing And Parasites
Bubba's Mom replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Parasites aren't as rare as you might think. You can get them from unwashed fruit or veggies, or even some municipal water supplies may have them. A healthy digestive system would probably be able to squelch them, but if you already have a damaged intestine they can take hold? (when I was tested I had a very common one, which they usually think of as fairly... -
ARCHIVED Irishheart, Come Home!
Bubba's Mom replied to bartfull's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
IrishHeart is like the heartbeat of the forum. Who knows how many lives she has saved? She's like a beacon of hope to all who enter here. She's stern when someone is being pig headed, she's suportive when someone feels weak, she has a great sense of humor, and is so giving of her time and knowledge. She has a lot of hard earned knowledge! She has... -
I have family members too, that should be tested. I can see the symptoms in them. My hubby too. You can tell them about Celiac, and gluten, but it's up to them to act on it..or not act on it. To me, it doesn't make sense to not look into it. It's such a simple thing to change in one's diet, and could save them from a lot of unpleasant symptoms, and...

Hmmmm...I'm naturally a blond, but several years ago I dyed my hair red for a while. Could that have been my "celiac trigger"?

ARCHIVED My Biopsy Word For Word
Bubba's Mom replied to troykm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am one of the people that has a negative blood test for Celiac, but my symptoms were so bad, a scope was ordered at the same time as the blood work. My endoscope showed complete villious atrophy, along with some ulceration in the duodenum. I was DXed based on the biopsies, but it was obvious with the naked eye. The Dr. gave me photos and they look just... -

ARCHIVED Outrageous Things I Have Said And Done!
Bubba's Mom replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had this happen too. I got choken up when I passed through the bakery dept. (they were making bread) on my way to the seafood dept. Another thing that my family thinks is crazy is..I won't go barefoot in the house. The gluten eaters drop crumbs all over, but more importantly, my whole house may be contaminated from straw that my hubby spread out... -
ARCHIVED What Else Can Cause Celiac Damage To Villi?
Bubba's Mom replied to GottaSki's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't know what the exact counts of my eosinophils/lymphocytes were. I was told that the ratio of them was what helped determine if I had refractory sprue or something else going on. In my case they noted a higher number of eosinophils. In order to be DXed as refractory sprue the lymphocyte count would be much higher. With your thyroid levels...some... -
ARCHIVED Losing Hope...
Bubba's Mom replied to kswan08's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are several digestive enzymes brands that are sold over the counter. Some are mostly plant based with bromelain, papain, etc. Some have pork bile too. Just be sure to read the label for the ingredients. I'd be surprised if any have gluten, soy, or dairy though. I was using a store brand from Meijer's. I think most brands are very similar though... -
ARCHIVED What Else Can Cause Celiac Damage To Villi?
Bubba's Mom replied to GottaSki's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The tests for SIBO aren't 100% accurate..and if you get a positive test, they don't know which strain of bacteria is the problem. Certain antibiotics are used for specific strains. My test showed a high hydrogen reading..but methane as well. I was told that's very unusual. I went on 3 different antibiotics without seeing any noticeable difference. I... -
ARCHIVED My Biopsy Word For Word
Bubba's Mom replied to troykm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't understand why Dr.s say such scary things! I tested negative in my bloodwork, but had severe damage when scoped. I'm glad the GI scheduled the scope at the same time as she ordered the blood test. Some Dr.s won't scope with negative blood tests. Anyways..we have our answers now. It looks like yours was caught before you got severe intestinal... -
I'm so happy that you aren't getting the bad reactions that you were! That gives me hope that I might get some things back too, one day. I hope you can get that tooth taken care of. Dental problems are just miserable. I had 2 teeth break..two months apart. Needed crowns on both. That was expensive. Fresh corn on the cob looks so good when my family...

ARCHIVED What Else Can Cause Celiac Damage To Villi?
Bubba's Mom replied to GottaSki's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had the same thing. Repeat endoscopes showed severe damage not healed by going gluten-free. There are other things that can cause villi flattening. I went to the Mayo Clinic for more tests. In my case they *think* it's from small intestine bacterial overgrowth(SIBO). I quit eating dairy and soy too. I was put on Endocort, a mild steroid that stays in... -
ARCHIVED Outrageous Things I Have Said And Done!
Bubba's Mom replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My family has seen my many reactions. It's hard to understand, but reactions are real. Things we used to do and not suffer from are suddenly making us very ill. I can't believe it myself sometimes! It seems like some bad dream that we can't wake up from. How about the avoiding kisses? Constant counter/stove wiping, hand washing, label reading... -
ARCHIVED Testing Catch 22
Bubba's Mom replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had reactions to other foods besides gluten too. I had allergy testing, which showed no reactions. I had quite a few reactions to molds and pollens though. My allergist said there are no reliable tests for food intolerances. The way you learn what you react to is by logging what you eat/any reactions. I found my food log a very valuable tool. I... -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Yeast (Tmi, Sorry)
Bubba's Mom replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In addition to cutting out sugar, starches, and yeast, add coconut oil to your diet. It helps fight candida. I use it instead of butter on cooked veggies..and in my coffee. You can also use it topically to ease itching/burning..and it's safe to use as a personal lubricant too. Be sure to take a probiotic with lactobacillus acidophilus. It helps kill off... -
ARCHIVED Probiotic Question
Bubba's Mom replied to JSegura226's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Probiotics will wage war with bad bacteria. If you feel symptoms after taking them it could be an indication that you are getting a die off? Some probiotics have inulin or other probiotic "feeders" in them too, which *could* cause a reaction, so read the label? If you are eating a diet that starves out yeast and the bad bacteria that feed on sugars... -
ARCHIVED Losing Hope...
Bubba's Mom replied to kswan08's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was very sick..and my Dr. wouldn't listen to me. He kept saying there was nothing wrong with me..eat Tums..try increasing my antidepressant. I continued to go downhill. I was losing weight and didn't want to eat. When I did eat I felt lousy, had reflux, and nausea, bloating, gas...etc. I found a GI on my own. She ordered the blood tests for Celiac...
