ARCHIVED Very Quick Dinner Ideas
Adalaide replied to Beantree's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My husband has some sort of moral opposition to casseroles or something, not really sure what's going on there but he refuses to touch them. So instead of cooking for one, I cook for 10 when I make casseroles and just freeze a bunch. I'll freeze 4 or 5 that will feed me twice. I warm them in the oven, but I'm sure that it can be done in the microwave too... -
ARCHIVED Share Favorite Oatmeal Cookie Recipes
Adalaide replied to Adalaide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If the same recipe passes two tests than it must be good. I'm thinking dark chocolate chips and dried cranberries. It'll be delicious and it'll keep my husband away from them. -
ARCHIVED Share Favorite Oatmeal Cookie Recipes
Adalaide posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
So I took a huge risk this morning, but after finding a deal too good to pass up I had a bag of oats in my pantry so I had oatmeal for breakfast. It's only been about an hour but I haven't gotten sick. Yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the day. Anyway, on to my point. I know the internet is full of recipes but I also trust you guys more than random... -
I have been exhausted for so long that it's pretty much a way of life for me. Before being gluten free I'd find myself sleeping 12-20 hours a day at least 4 days a week, usually more like 5 or 6. Now I find that only happening about twice a week which is awesome. I still don't have the energy to do much and am quite easily worn out but at least I'm awake...

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A Saturday afternoon trip to the store got me some goodies like ground turkey for $.99 a pound and a ginormous tub of ricotta relatively cheap. I kind of threw a bunch of crap together and called it a pasta casserole. I kept just enough out to have for dinner and froze three small ones for later. It turned out better than I thought it would so at least I... -
Once you've verified that you aren't getting cross contamination or missing something it's more or less a waiting game. The longer you eat gluten the more damage you cause. I'm coming up on my 5 month mark since going gluten free and while I feel better, I don't feel good. I'm no longer a living biowarfare weapon, which is awesome because I don't spend half...

ARCHIVED Homemade Biscuit Mix
Adalaide replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
That sounds interesting. I may try this in a much smaller batch. It's been like a whole week since I cracked a box of Bisquick to make a coconut pie. -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat

Chicken rice casserole. A year ago this was a quick easy meal that involved throwing rice, soup and chicken in a pan and throwing it in the oven. Since I refuse to spend $4 for a can of soup it now involves making my own mushroom soup which I'm glad I learned to do, it's far better than anything I ever had from a can. -
ARCHIVED What Did You Have For Lunch Today?
Adalaide replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The plan was to have a spinach salad with some nuts and feta for lunch. Turns out I added some watermelon for dessert after dropping it on the floor, forcing me to cut it up instead of waiting until Monday. (Don't ever do this, the sticky is everywhere!) -
ARCHIVED Toasted Coconut Marshmallows
Adalaide replied to 1974girl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OMG I love those things! Double bonus because my husband won't touch coconut so I know that he'll keep his grubby hands off my bag. I usually fail to pay attention to what I'm doing though and end up with a bellyache. -
ARCHIVED What Did You Have For Lunch Today?
Adalaide replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I picked up some Schar rolls for pulled pork sandwiches but was unimpressed. Leftovers today, like most days, pintos and rice with salsa and some chorizo... and tums. I discovered yesterday that chorizo gives me terrible heartburn but I can't just let it go to waste! -
The short easy answer is, if it isn't a fresh fruit of veggie it is suspect. Some things are highly suspect, some not so much. I really mean everything. Canned beans, chicken broth, tomato soup, corn tortillas, frozen veggies (with sauce) and even some sugary candy are things I've found that either straight up have wheat in them, or "may contain" wheat. I...

ARCHIVED How Can I Make This Recipe Gluten-Free?
Adalaide replied to suziq0805's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The recipe only seems to be for the frosting, the cake is made as-is straight from the box. I'd just google gluten free angel food cake and find a recipe that seems to be to your liking. It isn't something I've tried yet so I can't recommend one recipe over another but maybe someone else can. (I can say though that there is a Taste of Home recipe and so far... -
ARCHIVED Levels Of Celiac?
Adalaide replied to 1974girl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Whether or not a very small amount of gluten causes symptoms, it doesn't change the fact that it will cause damage to your body. I suspect, but am not certain, that the reason they say to eat a ton of bread rather than a little is because they need to be able to find and biopsy the damage. You may not notice if you come out of the grocery store and someone... -
If you are comfortable living with knowing you feel better gluten free without a specific celiac diagnosis there is no point going back to making yourself sick for some whackjob doctor who wouldn't even biopsy your DH to confirm celiac. Not sure how the medical community is where you are, but you could try finding a less idiotic doctor. I wouldn't waste my...

ARCHIVED Sandwich Alternative
Adalaide replied to smsm's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sounds awesome, this will be a staple in my house through the summer. I wonder if it's too late to buy some pepper starters at the garden store. -
ARCHIVED Essential Oils
Adalaide replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Back when I had a sizable herb garden I grew chocolate and orange varieties of mints. I had some amazing brownies and tea. -
I use a dishcloth to wash counters and dishes. My husband would have a cow if I even thought of it, but you can also buy disposable cloths you can use to do dishes. They're usually with the sponges and you can pick up a pack of 4 or 6 at a dollar store. I'm fortunate I have a washing machine I can use so I can just throw in my rags and towels every 2 days...

ARCHIVED Essential Oils
Adalaide replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've never used oils, but I certainly can say that the reason we've had fold remedies passed down through the years is because they frequently work. Some ginger or peppermint tea is always good to help with the symptoms if I have the flu or an upset stomach for some reason. There are a handful of teas I'll drink if I have trouble sleeping, although nothing... -
I have to agree with Takala that sponges are not your friend. Not only are they simply gross, being by far the most germ ridden thing in a house, but once they're contaminated with gluten then that's that. If disposables like paper towels aren't in your budget you really should pick up a large pack of dishcloths and dishtowels so you can use a clean one every...

I don't have any issues and I don't use a dishwasher, although everyone else in the house does. I determined that I was continuing to get sick because people with gluten on their hands (even sometimes from a dishtowel that was CCd) were putting dishes away and/or getting dishes out of the cupboards. I now have my own plates and bowls on top of pots and pans...

Gross!!! Every time my husband gets his face near me I'm like "are you poisoned?" Generally this leads to a guilty look and him backing off. I have to admit I'd probably be more than a little peeved if we were out for a romantic day and he decided he'd rather than have pizza than kisses.

ARCHIVED New To Gluten Free Kitchen
Adalaide replied to Ashlynn6's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a shared kitchen so I'm not lucky enough to be able to just prevent cc. I was lucky to have just bought myself a nice set of Pyrex for Christmas just before my diagnosis. I love that I can use them for leftovers or for casseroles and soups to store in the freezer. My MIL uses some of those "disposable" containers and always buys some generic brand... -
ARCHIVED Favorite Fruit Smoothie Recipes?
Adalaide replied to Ninja's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have one of those handy little blenders with the single serve cups you can drink from. I just plop in about 1.5 cups of yogurt and frozen fruit (round about half yogurt and half fruit), then top it off with milk. I love just plain peach or peach and strawberry. I also like doing bananas and strawberries, just a variety of berries or a tropical one with... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Well, I haven't really cooked since Sunday. Between spending all day Monday at a midnight release event and spending way too much time playing video games since then I've lived off of all of my chocolate-peanut butter snacks and some Glutino frozen pizzas. (Which aren't particularly good, but they were on sale for $1.50 each.) I managed to find my way...
