ARCHIVED Can Sugar Intolerance
aikiducky replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Cane sugar is sugar that is got from the sugar cane which is a plant. Table sugar is either cane sugar or beet sugar. I don't think it needs to be specified on a label, so you'll need to contact manufacturers to know which products are ok. Fresh fruit only have their own sugar in them so fruit is ok. I don't know about artificial sweeteners. I... -
ARCHIVED Please Give Me Some Advice
aikiducky replied to Dru's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the update! I know what you mean about being glad to know even if it means you have to be sick for now. I guess the fact that you reacted both to wheat and barley does point to gluten. Good luck with the doc on Thursday and I'll look for your post then! Pauliina -
To me this actually sounds more reassuring than not! The most important thing is that they seem to be very well aware of the sources of cc. I would be much more suspicious of a restaurant that said "sure we know the gluten free diet, you'll be fine" or something like that. I would always be wondering if they just didn't understand how difficult it is to not...

ARCHIVED Chemical Depression After Being Glutened
aikiducky replied to mhansen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gluten-caused depression has been discussed here quite a lot. You're not the only one! When you do get glutened, remember that it's not you, it's a chemical reaction, and that it will pass. I find that taking a vit. b supplement helps me, don't know if that would help or if it's just me. Oh, and when I know I have been glutened I don't make any... -
ARCHIVED Uggh, Bad Blood Tests Results - I New It - Glutened
aikiducky replied to jmd3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do I read your signature right that you've only been gluten free for a few months? It can take up to two years for all the antibodies to disappear from your blood as far as I know, some of them are more long lived than others, and of course it's normal to make some mistakes with your diet in the beginning. It would make more sense to look at your initial... -
ARCHIVED Could Use Some Advice
aikiducky replied to kimber's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Dealing with multiple intolerances can seem impossible in the beginning. I'd second the suggestion that you start with a list of what he can eat and go from there. Don't worry about letting him try foods you think he might not like - if he starts to feel better, he might surprise you, kids are sometimes amazingly practical about food. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED 7 Yrs gluten-free & I Look Pregnant!
aikiducky replied to Enough's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have your vit. B12 levels been checked? That could account for tiredness and poor concentration though maybe not the bloating. Some of the other B vitamins can also play a part... what you could do on your own is try a vit. B complex supplement and see if that helps. Someone mentioned digestive enzymes, if the problem is that your stomach has a hard... -
ARCHIVED Please Give Me Some Advice

I'd say if you still feel horrible at the end of the week though that you should start to consider other possibilities. But lets hope that won't be the case! Pauliina -

Karen, thanks for the update! I had wondered how you were doing. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Where Do I Start?
aikiducky replied to Jenybeen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If the last biopsy was a year ago, he still has symptoms, and he's still on gluten, I think it might be a good idea to have another biopsy. It might be that in this year the celiac has progressed enough to be detectable. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Please Give Me Some Advice
aikiducky replied to Dru's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes that's possible! The way my reactions go I usually feel really bad for a couple days initially, then I start to feel somewhat better, then exactly one week later I get a "peak" and after that I really start to improve. In the beginning I always thought I had glutened myself again until I figured this pattern out. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Diet Is Too Easy - Am I Doing Something Wrong?
aikiducky replied to mattj's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think it might be worth the trouble to avoid all dairy even just for a couple weeks to see if it helps. So yes even things like dry products with milk ingredients. Then if you start to feel better you can eat some again and see what happens. I sometimes cook rice (or nuke some microwaveable rice) and mix in some coconut cream and a banana. Yum. I also... -
Nice to hear from you Steve, glad your doing well! Pauliina

ARCHIVED Please Give Me Some Advice
aikiducky replied to Dru's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm glad your planning to test your son as well. Of course it's not something to wish on a child but IF he has celiac it's much better to know it now, so that he has a chance of absorbing all the nutrients he needs while he grows up. Do keep us updated when you see your doc will you? Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Diet Is Too Easy - Am I Doing Something Wrong?
aikiducky replied to mattj's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Medical consensus in Europe is that maltodextrin and glucose syrup made from wheat are safe for most celiacs. There are however people who react to them, I'm one of them. The only ways to find out that I know of is to cut them out completely for a while and see if anything improves, or have follow up biopsies to see that your intestine is healing. I get... -

ARCHIVED Diet Is Too Easy - Am I Doing Something Wrong?
aikiducky replied to mattj's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Mattj, if you are in the UK, labels DON'T have to say what maltodextrin or glucose syrup has been derived of. All other ingredients, like natural flavours or spices, you can trust to be gluten free unless the labels says otherwise, but maltodextrin or glucose syrup can be from wheat. THE ABOVE APPLIES TO EUROPE ONLY PEOPLE, don't get confused. Did... -

Pea protein would make me gassy all buy it's own without gluten helping, but do you normally eat peas without problems? Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Got In A Fight With Hubby, What Should I Do?
aikiducky replied to aorona's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I guess by now you might have made up already, at least I hope so. Anyway, I'd side with the simple apology camp... don't try to bring up a whole discussion of all your fears about the move at the same time. Save that for a time that you both are feeling comfortable. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED I Have Been Turned Upside-down!
aikiducky replied to silly celiac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just one tip - any symptoms that you have from your last glutening - don't hide them from your boyfriend! That is eventually the most effective way to convince him. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Please Give Me Some Advice
aikiducky replied to Dru's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The doctor can't really tell you whether or not you should go back on gluten and get tested- that's up to you. The two choices you listed are the two I'm aware of, so basically you already know what your choices are. Assuming that you indeed have celiac - being gluten free for a while like you have and then having as much gluten as there is in two servings... -
ARCHIVED Can A Vitamin D Deficiency Cause Fertility Problems?
aikiducky replied to powderprincess's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It's quite possible that vit. D deficiency is rare - in healthy individuals. People with celiac are in a different situation though. Sometimes doctors seem to forget that. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED How To Deal With Meals Within A New Dating Situation
aikiducky replied to bigapplekathleen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Another kind of approach - how about shopping & cooking together? That way you could explain things as you go, and also feel confident that there isn't any accidental cc. Dunno if that would be practical? Pauliina -
ARCHIVED I Have Been Turned Upside-down!
aikiducky replied to silly celiac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
To the original poster - I would second the idea of getting a biopsy of your rash/blisters, if you still have them. Try to find a dermatologist who is familiar with dermatitis herpetiformis because the skin biopsy has to be done a certain way to be accurate. If you have DH there's no doubt or question, you have celiac, need to be gluten free, and you don... -

Your doctor sounds like a really good one! I hope the specialist is going to be as nice. What are you planning to do in the meantime, are you going to eat gluten free or go back on gluten? Pauliina
