  1. You know that's probably true. When I was eating ice cream I had given myself permission to eat it since it was lactose free and gluten free, and of course then I was eating it all the time. I didn't actually feel all that awful then, it was during the holidays though and I was more tired all the time than usual but since I didn't have to work I didn't...
  2. You'll have a hard time stopping after just one ice cream. I used to still eat some dairy last summer and once I started with the ice cream I was hooked... but now that I've been completely cf for a while, even a little bit gives me just as much grief as a glutening would, so I don't want to try anymore. I'm not avoiding casein in derivatives though, or...
  3. Tamara, that's interesting what your saying about her getting incredibly angry. I've noticed a difference myself with gluten and casein, gluten makes me more like depressed and irritable, but casein will make me just MAD. I just get this rage that comes from nowhere and even I know I have no reason to be angry about anything but I still feel incredibly angry...
  4. I have memory problems and concentration problems when I get glutened, too. I find that for the stomach issues, I might not have to be so extremely careful with cross contamination etc. But if I want to keep my head sharp I have to be just very very careful. I've checked my shampoos etc, I don't eat out, I don't eat a lot of processed food. And it takes a...
  5. In order of symptoms I mind the most: Irritability/depression Fatigue Brain fog, inability to concentrate or remember things Balance and coordination problems Bloating Very foul gas Equally foul loose frequent stools for a couple days, followed by a couple weeks constipation Itchy scalp & shoulders Acid reflux (sometimes) Nausea...
  6. You could also repeat the biopsy. The results from three years ago only tell you what the situation was three years ago, if you do indeed have celiac then it's possible that you have developed more damage in the time since. Just an idea. Pauliina
  7. Lol, radman, you know how to choose your questions! Actually this discussion has been really enlightening. I can't have grain alcohol or vinegar at all, and I never quite understood why. But it could very well be that I react to some component of the grain other than gluten. So I stick to wine and port. Which unfortunately doesn't help you at all,...
  8. False positives are possible but they're rare I think. I think in any case your sister should retest regularly every few years because it could be that the damage just doesn't show on tests yet. Or she could try going on the diet and see how she feels. As to the make up, minor cross contamination etc.... it could be that you have been gluten free enough...
  9. Heh. I just got glutened yesterday (bah!) because I went to a pancake restaurant with some people. The only thing I had there was a cup of tea, and I borrowed a fork to eat my own fruit salad with. Either one must have had traces of flour in it/on it. Anyway, today I'm bloated and tired, feel like a wet rag... I did wonder if it was such a good idea before...

    ARCHIVED "celiac Isn't Hereditary"

Matt, I hope you are planning to go 110% gluten free now that you have had your endoscopy? Pauliina
  11. I've been gluten free for almost one and a half years now and I feel great. Six months into the diet though I did still feel crummy a lot. I had gotten better in some respects but I also had some symptoms that I didn't have before going gluten free. But nowadays I feel fine unless I eat gluten or dairy. I hope you will soon, too! Pauliina
  12. I think it sounded like a glutening from your previous posts. In that case, I guess you should wait a couple more weeks with dairy, because you won't be able to tell symptoms apart otherwise. It's a good idea anyway, because that way you really have a good break from dairy, so you should react to it noticeably IF you indeed have a problem with it. So my opinion...
  13. TCA, that's amazing. Few people would have the patience to approach it so systematically, my hat's off to you! This discussion has been really interesting, although in my own case the whole point is just academic because I react to incredibly small amounts of gluten, lol. And my symptoms are unpleasant enough that I never ever willingly will eat anything...
  14. I have problems with non-organic meats as well. In my case though it's most noticeable if I eat non-organic chicken. Pauliina
  15. Well, for me it went away after a little more than a year gluten free (and I wasn't very sick to start with) - until then I did bloat even though I was strictly gluten free and dairy free. Nowadays it only happens after I have been glutened, but IT HAPPENS FOR THREE WEEKS after that. All my other symptoms disappear before the bloating goes away. I just figure...
  16. My GI symptoms aren't all that bad really (or I don't mind them so much) but the BRAIN FOG and fatigue are really annoying! The most annoying symptom though is that I get very depressed when I get glutened, and that makes dealing with all the other symptoms so much harder. I mean, then I end up being depressed about being tired, and bloated, and so...
  17. I hadn't noticed the replies to this thread, sorry for the late reply! Why is Finland celiac paradise... because it's so well known there! A lot of cafes have gluten free cakes and cookies in the freezer, you just ask and have a treat with your tea or coffee! And even small supermarkets usually have gluten free products on the shelves. And waiters...
  18. Celiac is just a name. It's the name that is usually given the disease if you have biopsy proven damage to your intestine, or if your doctor for other reasons decides to call it celiac. Since you have diagnosed yourself through Enterolab, you can decide to call your condition whatever you want. Casein intolerance isn't like lactose intolerance, the...
  19. I had a quick look on the website, and thought I'd try a couple days without snacking between meals. Feels good! I don't get too hungry or lack energy. I didn't really read much about it further than that though. Pauliina
  20. "No symptoms" Mallysmama, what you have been describing in your later posts in this thread don't sound like "no symptoms" to me! They sound exactly like symptoms of a very mild constant glutening. And if you have indeed been eating cereal that has malt flavoring, and not being that concerned about cross contamination etc., then you have been constantly...
  21. Here's another controversial thought: You might be ok. Since you've been gluten free for so long, it might be that your body really doesn't react strongly to an occasional exposure to gluten. It's the reaction that does the damage, not the gluten itself! Plus, there really seems to be a sort of lull in the symptoms of the disease until the twenties or thirties...
  22. I'm frankly worried about the situation as you describe it. It's one thing to wonder if you really have celiac, some of my friends I'm sure aren't completely convinced about mine... but it's a different thing to sneak gluten into your food to "test" you. What if you had an allergy instead, you might have died? One thing you can do is to let him know...
  23. I think cotton mouth is more of an allergic type reaction. Could be your slightly allergic to one of the ingredients? Pauliina
  24. I think it could well be that this year there are just some nastier bugs around than usual. You know flu viruses are not the same from year to year. So hopefully next winter might be better again. Pauliina
  25. I'm glad you are feeling better. Thanks for the update! Pauliina
