  1. Melody, Welcome to the board! You have found the best place for information and knowledge. Make sure to read on celiac.com, the parent site to this board---there is SO much on there. I love it. I only have a min to post, but after reading your post, I had to just say hi. Couple things; Your son should most definitely be tested asap. The full blood...
  2. Open Original Shared Link here is a thread about some stuffings/dressings. I think its important to keep this thread going so people can get good ideas from this thread---it is great
  3. Monica - and all - I have similar issues, unfortunately. I am being tested for eosinophilic disorders, which are food intolerance/allergy related. It can affect your esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and/or colon. The experts (who are at the Cincinatti Children's Hospital...but it affects many adults as well) say that it is a mini-epidemic. They...
  4. Just wanted to say hi!
  5. no-the blood panel is specific to celiac antibodies. I would try to "buckle" down (if possible)....and then have your bloodwork re-done. See how that is. Depending on that, you might want to do an endoscopy with multiple biopsies to check the status of your villi (and possibly refractory celiac)
  6. you have to eat gluten for the test to be remotely accurate. make sure your docs run the FULL panel (print out from www.celiaccenter.org and click on FAQs)...sometimes docs only run part of the panel and you need it all. best of luck, Laura
  7. Are you eating out? Chances are, if you are eating out, even at gluten-free places, you have a high chance of cross contamination. I didn't start to get really better til I stopped eating out. Another option--refractory Celiac. But, until your diet goes "crazy gluten free" (and girl, do I understand!) I would not wory about that quite yet. Let us...
  8. Dave, I think your answer is right there, unfortunately. If it is derived from wheat, as it says, it is not safe. Hope you get to feeling better.
  9. What insurance do you have? Have you recently switched insurance? Something is not adding up here---they are giving you the run-around. Do you have your explanation of benefits? I have gone through H$ll and back with a previous insurance (it was a student insurance) so I understand. Good luck
  10. Jennifer, Welcome to the board! I am happy you have found us---it is great that you found this site so early on. Also, the parent site to this forum, celiac.com, is full of articles, lists of ingredients, faqs, and all kinds of great info to "get you started." I still refer back to it regularly. Also, my favorite celiac book is by Dr. Peter Green...
  11. Like with many places, it kind of depends on which place it is--managment, etc. Although I know have other food issues, when I was "just" (haha) gluten free, I would not eat there. I had other options that were knowledeable and chose to go elsewhere. Cross contamination is a huge issue for me, as well as people who have no idea how serious it is....so it...
  12. yes, that would be true the cheesecake recipe called for that amount of graham crackers, so I have made it now with gingersnap or pamela's shortbread. its under the "thanksgiving recipes" thread. yum yum yum.
  13. welcome to the official gluten free club i'm happy the "modified food starch" thing was clarified. Also, now because of the 2006 food allergen labeling law, ALL companies must list if there is ANY wheat (wheat is a top 8 allergen) (not gluten though), but Kraft was ahead of the curve before, and was good about listing wheat before required.
  14. thanks, mommida. I am only trying to pass on the info that I 'wish I knew back then.' (I hadn't found the board at this time). I am a firm believer in "if ppl ask for help, they want the real answer, even if it is tough and they don't like it right away" vs. just prancing around the topic maybe i should change my user name to "non-negotiable"--ha...
  15. isn't it interesting what docs "used" to know...
  16. penguin, No matter the result of all this, I just hope that you find some answers and your health improves. Will be thinking of you! Laura
  17. Shalia, no problem. I highly recommend doing searches on pubmed for more info. Like I said, I just posted a few to get ya started. I think reading medical abstracts and journal articles is fun for some reason. Oh, wait, its because I have had docs who haven't a clue, that's why I can't remember-forgive me-was he tested via traditional bloodwork? ...
  18. I believe it is both. It makes sense because they describe celiac as a medical chameleon. Some people are 100% asymptomatic, others are debilitated and have every symptom, and most fall somewhere in between. So yes, it is possible to have reactions sometimes, and others not. But, like you said, the lack of symptoms does not mean celiac is not there...
  19. have more to add: i'm sure you've already did searches on pubmed, but thought i'd post anyways Open Original Shared Link I did searches with keyword pairs like: autism and gluten, autism and casein, autism and celiac ones that particulary caught my eye included (and there were many more) Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link...
  20. You are a mom trying to give her son a healthy, happy life. That is not abnormal. The best results are not a test, but how your son responds. Plus, there is research indicating the link between autistic symptoms and gluten and casein. Taking food out of your son's life is not going to damage him. It will be tough though. But not taking them out,...
  21. I honestly don't know the definitive answer myself---but I am an extremely sensitive Celiac, and my motto is, if it is in question---don't do it. I know that is not scientific at all. So apply that my motto as necessary.
  22. Alice- As you know now, you DO have to be pushy. Who cares what a doc thinks about you? You are the one who has to feel better, not some lousy doc You are your ONLY advocate for your health. In terms of the genes, I meant that without a gene test, it can be hard to say if it is/isn't celiac or gluten sensitivity. I.e., celiac genes and no g/s genes...
  23. This is why I had to share---I knew YOU guys would appreciate it and know what it really meant. Its amazing when your friends become like family and support you through anything. Luckily, I have great friends all around---just today I had 9 of my best girlfriends from Penn State send me roses (sick from undiagnosed but non-Celiac related issues.....
